  • Base-mounted type(BMT) driving assembly in CNC machine tools is an indispensable part to improve productivity by reducing tool changeover time and to meet the ever-increasing demand of precision machine tools. This study aimed to perform finite element analysis and geometric parameter optimization to improve the efficiency of BMT driving assembly. First, simulations for three-dimensional structural and vibration analysis were performed using ANSYS/Workbench on the initial geometric models of BMT driving assembly. After analyzing stress and deformation concentration zones, several new geometrical models were designed and evaluated by design of experiments and ANSYS/DesignXplorer. Through a series of analysis-evaluation-modification cycles, it was seen that designed models were effective in determining optimal geometry of BMT driving assembly.

  • The communication of each others is lack between planing, design, construction and maintenance in domestic construction industry. This problem makes the omission of information and the loss of cost. So, the introduction of BIM can be the solution about that. BIM manages all information generated during all life-cycle of a structure and consequently maximizes the efficiency of utilizing information. This is done through 3D information model associated with a three-dimensional(3D) parametric CAD. This study proposes the seismic analysis process of steel box bridge for structural design of bridge construction project based on BIM. The additional process is needed for the purpose that structural data is inherent in the property information of 3D information model. This process has 3D modeling progress done by using the information decided in design phase. The design document of seismic analysis can be derived with the proposed process to steel box bridge.

  • Seismic dissipation devices can play a crucial role in mitigating earthquake damages, loss of life and post-event repair and downtime costs. This research investigates the use of ring springs with high-force-to-volume (HF2V) dissipaters to create damage-free, recentring connections and structures. HF2V devices are passive rate-dependent extrusion-based devices with high energy absorption characteristics. Ring springs are passive energy dissipation devices with high self-centring capability to reduce the residual displacements. Dynamic behaviour of a system with nonlinear structural stiffness and supplemental hybrid damping via HF2V devices and ring spring dampers is used to investigate the design space and potential. HF2V devices are modelled with design forces equal to 5% and 10% of seismic weight and ring springs are modelled with loading stiffness values of 20% and 40% of initial structural stiffness and respective unloading stiffness of 7% and 14% of structural stiffness (equivalent to 35% of their loading stiffness). Using a suite of 20 design level earthquake ground motions, nonlinear response spectra for 8 different configurations are generated. Results show up to 50% reduction in peak displacements and greater than 80% reduction in residual displacements of augmented structure compared to the baseline structure. These gains come at a cost of a significant rise in the base shear values up to 200% mainly as a result of the force contributed by the supplemental devices.

  • As the axle at the vehicle of railway has the important role for safe running, the strength, and impact-proof, safety factor, stress and deformation must be considered. There are the simulation models of 1 and 2 in this study. These models are investigated by performing the convergence technique through the design, the structural and fatigue analyses with CATIA and ANSYS. As the maximum deformation and equivalent stress of model A are lower than those of model B, model A has more durability than model B. The durability to prevent the damage can be investigated by applying the result of this study into the part design of the vehicle of rail road. And it is possible to be grafted onto the convergence technique at design and show the esthetic sense.

  • In this paper, infrared reflector design targeting infrared stealth effect is presented using structural optimization based on the phase field method. The analysis model was determined to accomplish the design that an incident infrared wave was reflected to a desired direction. The design process was to maximize the objective value at the measuring domain located in a target region and the design objective was set to the Poynting vector value which represents the energy flux. Optimization results were obtained according to the variation of some parameter values related to the phase field method. The model with a maximum objective value was selected as the final optimal model. The optimal model was modified to eliminate the gray scale using the cut-off method and it confirmed improved performance. In addition, to check the desired effect in the middle wave infrared range(MWIR), the analysis was performed by changing the input wavelength. The finite element analysis and optimization process were performed by using the commercial package COMSOL combined with the Matlab programming.

  • Recently, RC transfer slab systems have been used widely to construct high-rise wall-type apartments for securing parking space or public space. However, it is problem that the design method and structural performance evaluation method developed for thin RC flat slab are still used in the design of the transfer slab whose thickness is very thick and therefore structural behavior is expected to be different from RC flat slab. Thus, for the rational design of the transfer slab, the ultimate shear behavior of the RC transfer slab system is required to be analyzed properly. Accordingly, in the present study, the two-way shear behavior of the transfer slab was analyzed using nonlinear FEM according to various design parameters such as thickness of the transfer slab, strength of concrete, shear span ratio, and reinforcement ratio. In addition, the two-way shear strength evaluations of RC transfer slab by the existing evaluation methods were verified by comparing those with the results of nonlinear FEM analysis.

  • Significant structural damages due to earthquakes reveal the importance of seismic design provisions. This paper presents a comparison between the seismic design provisions of Albania, Croatia, Iran, and Turkey for the design of mid-rise reinforced-concrete (RC) frames. Information on the historical development of the considered provisions are given. The code provisions are compared, illustrating the main differences in the minimum requirements for column and beam detailing and analysis for mid-rise RC frames. 4-story, 5-story, and 6-story buildings are designed according to each design code, and their performance is evaluated comparatively by using a displacement-based adaptive pushover procedure and eigenvalue analysis. It is observed that recent Turkish code has the highest and Albanian code has the lowest level of requirements in terms of member size and reinforcement detailing. The considered models indicate 15%, 20% and 50%, lower period values than the Croatia, Iran and Albania buildings, respectively. Additionally, building models per Croatia, Iran and Albania codes have 30%, 35% and 65% less base shear capacity when compared to Turkish building codes. Building models per Croatia and Iran codes indicate similar properties both in terms of strength and stiffness.

  • The analysis and design of complex structures like sandwich-panel elements are difficult; the use of finite element method for the analysis is complicated and time consuming when non-linear effects are considered. On the other hand, artificial neural network (ANN) models can capture the non-linear effects and its application requires lesser computational demand. Two ANN models were trained, tested and validated to compute the force for a given displacement of a sandwich-type roof element; 2555 force and element deformation pairs were used for training the ANN models. For the models trained without considering the damping effect, there were two values in the input layer: maximum displacement and current displacement, and for the model considering damping, displacement from the previous step was used as an additional input. Totally, 400 ANN models were trained. Results show that there is a good agreement between the experimental and simulated data, and the models showed a good performance with a mean square error value of 4548.85. Both the ANN models could simulate the inelastic behaviour, loss of rigidity, and evolution of permanent displacements. The models could also interpolate and extrapolate, which enables them to be used as an analysis and design tool for such complex elements.

  • The swash-type piston pump is a device that discharges as much volume of hydraulic oil generated as it moves the ramp by controlling the angle of the swash. This pump is suitable for high-speed high pressurization, and due to its useful characteristic being the variable capacity-type, it is used as a main pump for heavy equipment in various fields such as defense, shipbuilding, construction, etc. This study intends to obtain optimal design values by conducting a structural analysis in order to verify its reliability during the design process of the newly developed swash-type piston pump.
