  • In this paper, perception threshold for horizontal vibration of tall buildings was investigated. After a comparative study of human comfort criteria for wind-induced vibration in foreign countries being made, perception threshold was recorded by increasing acceleration in the range of 0.2Hz through 1.2Hz of frequency in horizontal vibration experiments, and perception of subjects was examined by a proper questionnaire. Also, the results obtained from experiments of horizontal vibration were compared with Japanese standard(AIJES-A001-2004).

  • It is necessary to estimate the dynamic characteristics of stay cables ie., the natural frequencies and the damping ratios of the stay cables to design cable damper for appropriate mitigation of cable vibrations and/or to estimate the tension of cables in service. In this study, a cable exciting robot for evaluating dynamic characteristics of stay cables has been developed, and the feasibility of the developed system has been demonstrated through a field test on the stay cable installed at the test yard of Highway and Transportation Technology Institute (HTTI). The dynamic characteristics of the stay cable were estimated based on acceleration data as well as displacement measured by digital image processing technique.

  • In this study a structure with viscoelastic and viscous dampers with identical damping coefficient subjected to stationary seismic and wind load were analyzed in time and frequency-domain to compare motion control capability of viscous and viscoelastic dampers. The dampers were placed based on story drift and acceleration obtained from RMS responses. According to the analysis results, the motion control capability of viscous dampers turned out to be superior to that of the viscoelastic dampers for the case of seismic load. On the contrary, in case of wind load, the viscoelastic dampers were more effective in the mitigation of dynamic responses. However, it was also found that the differences were in a narrow margin.

  • Recent building structures are superior in its ability but they are light and flexible, and so have problems of vibration. In general, the serviceability of RC slabs was known to be good against vibration because of its hardness. However, recent high-rise apartment slabs are mostly light and long, the serviceability of RC slabs due to vibration could be a problem. In this paper, a basic investigation about vibration problems of RC slabs was performed. Basic information and its influence on vibrations of RC slabs were revealed. Also, its serviceability against vibration was examined. Many tests were conducted on existing building located in Chung-Nam area. As a results, damping ratio, natural frequency, acceleration amplitude and displacement amplitude which were used to examine serviceability of the RC slabs were obtained. These results on the test building proved that its serviceability conditions were satisfied to meet the code against vibration.

  • This paper presents a novel method to carry out monitoring of transport infrastructure such as pavements and bridges through the analysis of vehicle accelerations. An algorithm is developed for the identification of dynamic vehicle-bridge interaction forces using the vehicle response. Moving force identification theory is applied to a vehicle model in order to identify these dynamic forces between the vehicle and the road and/or bridge. A coupled half-car vehicle-bridge interaction model is used in theoretical simulations to test the effectiveness of the approach in identifying the forces. The potential of the method to identify the global bending stiffness of the bridge and to predict the pavement roughness is presented. The method is tested for a range of bridge spans using theoretical simulations and the influences of road roughness and signal noise on the accuracy of the results are investigated.

  • A study on the seismic responses for a base isolated structure subjected to earthquakes with different frequency characteristics is peformed with time history analyses. Two types of seismic inputs are considered in these analyses, one is short period earthquakes such as El Centro(1940, NS), the other is long period ones such as Mexico(1985). The seismic responses of the base isolated structure depend on seismic input types and isolation frequencies. In this study the 0.5 Hz of isolation frequency for short period earthquakes remarkably reduces the acceleration responses, increases the relative displacements of isolator that are still within the proposed limits of isolator. However higher isolation frequency for long period earthquakes is more adequate to reduce the seismic responses of the base isolated structures; in the study 0.75 Hz is effective to Mexico 1985 earthquake.

  • Banwol bridge with steel plate girder and Pyongtaek bridge with PSC bos girder have been operated maintenance measuring system by the Seoul-Chonan of Kyongbu express railway. By analyzing the theoretical and experimental values of design load for these two bridge, the establishment of reference maintenance for measuring items was deduced from research. Two materials, steel and concrete plates, were considered as the upper structure. Actual measurement data for the behavior under speed, structural analysis results, and the presented references were analyzed and used to set up the reference establishment. The measuring items are stress(strain), displacement, dynamic acceleration, expansion movement, and dynamic frequency. The maintenance reference was established by comparing analytical and measuring values of the five items with respect to structural state class.

  • We present an approach, based on the state dependent Riccati equation, for designing non-collocated seismic response control strategies for buildings accounting for physical constraints, with particular attention to force saturation. We consider both cases of active control using general actuators and semi-active control using magnetorheological dampers. The formulation includes multi control devices, acceleration feedback and time delay compensation. In the active case, the proposed approach is a generalization of the classic linear quadratic regulator, while, in the semi-active case, it represents a novel generalization of the well-established modified clipped optimal approach. As discussed in the paper, the main advantage of the proposed approach with respect to existing strategies is that it allows to naturally handle a broad class of non-linearities as well as different types of control constraints, not limited to force saturation but also including, for instance, displacement limitations. Numerical results on a typical building benchmark problem demonstrate that these additional features are achieved with essentially the same control effectiveness of existing saturation control strategies.

  • In this paper active vibration control system using a linear oscillatory actuator (LOA) is studied to suppress structural vibration. Being compared with a hydraulic actuator, a LOA has simplified structure and requires a few elements, so it has lots of merits with respect to economics and maintenance. Performance test of active vibration control system using LOA is carried out on a steel test structure under base excitation. From this test it is confirmed that acceleration level of test structure is reduced near the resonance region. In the future research on the application to large to structures will be studied.

  • In this research, the structural health monitoring method using wavelet packet analysis and artificial neural network (ANN) is developed. Wavelet packet Transform (WPT) is applied to the response acceleration of a 3 element-cantilever beam which is subjected to impulse load and Gaussian random load to decompose the response signal, then the energy of each component is calculated. The first ten largest components in magnitude among the decomposed components are selected as input to an ANN to identify the damage location and severity. This method successfully predicted the amount of damage in the structure when the structure is subjected to impulse load. However, when the beam is subjected to Gaussian random load which can be considered as ambient vibration it did not yield satisfactory results. This method is applicable to structures such as machinery gears that are subjected to repetitive loads.
