  • The purposes of this study were to investigate kinematic parameters of racket head and upper extremities during squash back hand stroke and to provide quantitative data to the players. Five Korean elite male players were used as subjects in this study. To find out the swing motion of the players, the land-markers were attached to the segments of upper limb and 3-D motion analysis was performed. Orientation angles were also computed for angular movement of each segment. The results were as follows. 1) the average time of the back hand swing (downswing + follow-through) was 0.39s (0.24 s + 0.15 s). 2) for each event, the average racket velocity at impact was 11.17m/s and the velocity at the end of swing was 8.03m/s, which was the fastest swing speed after impact. Also, for each phase, 5.10m/s was found in down swing but 7.68m/s was found in follow-through. Racket swing speed was fastest after the impact but the swing speed was reduced in the follow-through phase. 3) in records of average of joints angle, shoulder angle was defined as the relative angle to the body. 1.04rad was found at end of back swing, 1.75rad at impact and it changes to 2.35 rad at the end of swing. Elbow angle was defined as the relative angle of forearm to upper arm. 1.73rad was found at top of backswing, 2.79rad at impact, and the angle was changed to 2.55rad at end of swing. Wrist angle was defined as the relative angle of hand to forearm. 2.48rad was found at top of backswing, 2.86rad at impact, and the angle changes to 1.96rad at end of swing. As a result, if the ball is to fly in the fastest speed, the body has to move in the order of trunk, shoulder, elbow and wrist (from proximal segment to distal segment). Thus, the flexibility of the wrist can be very important factor to increase ball speed as the last action of strong impact. In conclusion, the movement in order of the shoulder, elbow and the wrist decided the racket head speed and the standard deviations were increased as the motion was transferred from proximal to the distal segment due to the personal difference of swing arc. In particular, the use of wrist (snap) may change the output dramatically. Therefore, it was concluded that the flexible wrist movement in squash was very important factor to determine the direction and spin of the ball.

  • Combustion chamber crevices in SI engines are identified as the largest contributors to the engine-out hydrocarbon emissions. The largest crevice is the piston ring-pack crevice. A numerical simulation method was developed, which would allow to predict and understand the oxidation process of piston crevice hydrocarbons. A computational mesh with a moving grid to represent the piston motion was built and a 4-step oxidation model involving seven species was used. The sixteen coefficients in the rate expressions of 4-step oxidation model are optimized based on the results from a study on the detailed chemical kinetic mechanism of oxidation in the engine combustion chamber. Propane was used as the fuel in order to eliminate oil layer absorption and the liquid fuel effect. Initial conditions of the burned gas temperature and in-cylinder pressure were obtained from the 2-zone cycle simulation model. And the simulation was carried out from the end of combustion to the exhaust valve opening for various engine speeds, loads, equivalence ratios and crevice volumes. The total hydrocarbon (THC) oxidation in the crevice during the expansion stroke was 54.9% at 1500 rpm and 0.4 bar (warmed-up condition). The oxidation rate increased at high loads, high swirl ratios, and near stoichiometric conditions. As the crevice volume increased, the amount of unburned HC left at EVO (Exhaust Valve Opening) increased slightly.

  • With the difficulties in increasing the efficiency of conventional crank-driven compressors due to mechanical loss, compressor manufacturers have investigated new kinds of compressor such as a free piston compressor mechanism. This study investigates the energy efficiency of two different types of compressor for a household refrigerator. One is the conventional crank-driven compressor, and the other one is a linear compressor. The energy efficiencies of these compressors are evaluated. Experimental results show that the linear compressor has 10% lower power consumption than the brushless direct-current (BLDC) reciprocating compressor. The linear compressor demonstrates excellent energy efficiency by reducing the friction loss. Furthermore, a motor efficiency exceeding 90% is achieved by using a linear oscillating mechanism with a moving magnet. Additionally, the compressor stroke to piston diameter ratio of the oscillating piston in the linear compressor can be adjusted in order to modulate the cooling capacity of the compressor for improved system efficiency.

  • In this paper, a new forming process of large-size forgings of converged nozzle-shape is developed by the experimental study using the incremental forging method and combined forming method. The development of the forming process is focused on the manufacturing of large-size forgings by the press with medium load capacity. Various related processes are proposed and modelling experiments using plasticine are carried out. Thus, the incremental forging method for expanding is recommanded from the study of formability and forming load, etc. The selected process is then subjected to modelling experiments of lead and the design parameters such as preform for final process, die-width of the upper die and reduction amount of each stroke are determined. In order to verify the effectiveness of the selected process, 1/7 scale prototype experiment of the real material is carried out. Forgings of converged nozzle shape can be produced by the developed process within the limit loads and with the simple tools.

  • Flame propagation along vortex tube was experimentally investigated. The vortex tube was generated by the ejection of propane from a nozzle through a single stroke motion of a speaker and the ignition was induced from a single pulse laser. Non-reactive flow fields were visualized using shadow technique. From these images, vortex ring size and translational velocity were measured in order to determine the ignition time and position. Flame structure and flame speed were measured using high speed CCD camera. Flame speed was accelerated during the initial stage of flame kernel growth, and reached near constant value during steady propagation period. Near the completion of propagation, flame speed was decelerated and then extinguished. Flame speed along the non-premixed vortex tube was found to be linearly proportional to circulation, which was similar to that of the flame propagation along premixed vortex ring. Ignition position minimally affects the propagation characteristics. These imply that flame is propagating along the maximum speed locus expected to be along stoichiometric contour and also support the existence of tribrachial flames.

  • Recently, we have a lot interest in a sudden rise of oil prices and a change weather for the earth warmming, so, development of new alternative fuels need in order to spare fossil fuel and reduce exhaust emissions for air pollution prevention. Biodiesel, which can be generated from natural renewable sources such as new or used vegetable oils or animal fats, may be used as fuel in diesel engine of compression ignition engine. In this paper, the combustion characteristics between neat diesel oil and biodiesel blends(10 vol.% biodiesel and 20 vol.% biodiesel) were tested using four stroke, direct injection diesel engine, especially this biodiesel was produced from soybean oil at our laboratory. This analysis showed that cylinder pressures, the rate of pressure rises and the rate of heat releases were decreased as the blending ratios of biodiesel to diesel oil increased because of lower heating value of biodiesel in spite of increased oxygen content in biodiesel.

  • In this paper, in order to obtain the detailed information about lightning electromagnetic pulses, the electromagnetic pulses radiated from intracloud discharges were measured, and their characteristics and waveform parameters were analyzed statistically. The electromagnetic pulses produced by intracloud discharges are distinctly different with those by lightning return strokes. The zero-crossing times and the full pulse widths of the large bipolar electromagnetic pulses are gradually decreased as the stroke proceeds. Also, the electromagnetic pulses tend to be bipolar, with narrow and fast leader pulses superimposed on the initial half cycle. The mean numbers of leader pulses superimposed on the initial half cycle were 1.61$\pm$0.74 and 1.75$\pm$0.73 for the positive and negative polarities, respectively.

  • We report a case of a 5-year-old girl who developed left hemiparesis and left facial palsy, 6 days after the initiation of fever and respiratory symptoms due to pneumonia. Chest radiography, conducted upon admission, showed pneumonic infiltration and pleural effusion in the left lung field. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed acute ischemic infarction in the right middle cerebral artery territory. Brain magnetic resonance angiography and transfemoral cerebral angiography revealed complete occlusion of the right middle cerebral artery. Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection was identified by a 4-fold increase in IgG antibodies to M. pneumoniae between acute and convalescent sera by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Fibrinogen and D-dimer levels were elevated, while laboratory exams in order to identify other predisposing factors of pediatric stroke were all negative. This is the first reported pediatric case in English literature of a M. pneumoniae-associated cerebral infarction involving complete occlusion of the right middle cerebral artery.

  • This study proposes a newly modified form of existing ground electrodes in order to secure trust of grounding system for large current caused by a stroke of lightning. Proposed planar earth structure has a several needle electrodes around a circular rod and 4 plane electrodes in all directions. The plane electrodes are fused with the insulator on the linear rod, so that they're electrically isolated. The concept is to increase the discharge amount of earth structure using multiple discharge paths like needle and plane electrodes. To check the discharge efficiency of the suggested scheme, the discharge currents are compared with typically used two kinds of ground rods. To ensure accuracy in the measurement of the discharge current, the same material was used for the comparison model. Also, the ground resistance are simulated by CDEGS commercial software and the results are compared with measured data. Based on this kind of experimental study, the suggested ground rod can be used when designing a ground system or when constructing a ground system at the site.

  • It is important to begin left ventricular assist device (LVAD) treatment at appropriate time for heart failure patients who expect cardiac recovery after the therapy. In order to predict the optimal timing of LVAD implantation, we predicted pumping efficacy of LVAD according to the severity of heart failure theoretically. We used LVAD-implanted cardiovascular system model which consist of 8 Windkessel compartments for the simulation study. The time-varying compliance theory was used to simulate ventricular pumping function in the model. The ventricular systolic dysfunction was implemented by increasing the end-systolic ventricular compliance. Using the mathematical model, we predicted cardiac responses such as left ventricular peak pressure, cardiac output, ejection fraction, and stroke work according to the severity of ventricular systolic dysfunction under the treatments of continuous and pulsatile LVAD. Left ventricular peak pressure, which indicates the ventricular loading condition, decreased maximally at the 1st level heart-failure under pulsatile LVAD therapy and 2nd level heart-failure under continuous LVAD therapy. We conclude that optimal timing for pulsatile LVAD treatment is 1st level heart-failure and for continuous LVAD treatment is 2nd level heart-failure when considering LVAD treatment as "bridge to recovery".
