  • Spent ion-exchanged resin generated from various purification systems in CANDU reactor is causing concern due to a limited storage capacity and safe disposal. As a suggestion for a proper treatment technology for the spent ion-exchanged resin containing a high activity of C14 radionuclide which would be classified as Class A and C wastes, a fundamental study for the development of C-14 removal technology from a spent resin was performed. The adsorption characteristics of the inactive $HCO_3^-$ ion and other ions in a stripping solution on IRN-150 mixed resin was evaluated and the removal technology of the $HCO_3^-$ ion adsorbed on IRN-150 by an alkaline stripping method was proposed.

  • An evaluation of a plasma reactor was conducted to investigate its potential as a feasible and economical off-gas control technology for an air stripping tower (AST). The plasma reactor was powered by an alternating current with frequencies up to 1000Hz. The study showed that over 90% conversion of gas-phase trichloroethylene (TCE) can be achieved. An optimum frequency for the laternating current existed for maximum power input. The optimum frequency was dependent on the reactor geometry and the primary voltage applied. for a fixed geometry, a plasma reactor has a limited capacity for flow rate. Even though it is a feasible process to control off-gases, further investigations should be conducted to develop a more economic process.

  • NGC 4402 is a spiral galaxy located in the Virgo cluster. It is undergoing active HI gas stripping due to the strong ICM pressure, showing evidence for recent quenching of star formation. Its CO disk is also highly disturbed as HI, yet unlike HI disk, no sign of significant molecular gas stripping is found. Aiming to better understand how atomic gas stripping and disturbed molecular gas result in star formation quenching, we probe properties of molecular gas in the densest forms. As a pilot study, we observed HCN (1-0) and HCO+ (1-0) in the center of NGC 4402 using one of the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) antennas located at Yonsei site. In this work, we present the result from the KVN single-dish observations and discuss its implications.

  • We study the orbital histories of Virgo galaxies undergoing different HI gas stripping stages using phase-space diagrams. Based on the HI properties of galaxies, we find that location of galaxies is in good agreement with ram-pressure stripping predicted by numerical simulations with different infall time. For example, galaxies experiencing active gas stripping are mostly found in the first infall region showing high velocity with respect to the cluster center. Meanwhile, most galaxies that are likely to have lost gas a while ago are found in the cluster outskirts with low orbital velocities. We also discuss the cases where observational properties of galaxies and their locations in the phase-space do not well agree. In addition, we probe the phase-space of filaments and subgroups around or within Virgo. Our results strongly suggest that substructures can play important roles in galaxy evolution while galaxies are falling to the cluster.

  • Determination of cyanide ion has been studied by adsorptive stripping voltammetry using hanging mercury electrode. Cyanide ion complexed with copper ion is adsorpbed on the electrode and oxidised at the positive potential scan. Optimal conditions of CN determination were found to be ; supporting electrolyte solution ; 0.1 M NaCl of ammonium buffer at pH 10, accumulation potential; -800 mV vs Ag/AgCl, accumulation time ; 300 s, scan rate ; 50mV/s. The linear concentration of cyanide ion was observed in the range $1{\times}10^{-8}$, $1{\times}10^{-7}M$. The detection limit(n/s=3) was $0.13{\mu}g/L$($5{\times}10^{-9}M$) with 3.5% RSD.

  • Trace vanadium was determined by Adsorptive stripping voltammetry with HMDE in PIPES buffer solution. N-Benzoylphenylhydroxylamine was used as a ligand. The calibration curve of vanadium was linear over the range of $10{\sim}70{\mu}g/L$ on accumulation potential of +0.15V and on accumulation time of 10 sec. The various metal ions did not interfere with the determination of vanadium(V) in this case.

  • In this study, photoresist stripping in semiconductor or LCD (liquid crystal display) fabrication processes using DIO, was investigated. In order to obtain the high PR stripping efficiency of DIO. we have developed new ozone-generating system with high ozone concentration and ozone-resolving system with high contact ratio. In this study, we obtained ozone gas concentrations of 11 % by new ozone-generating system, ozone-resolving efficiency of 99.5 % and maximum solubility of 130 ppm in deionized water. We applied the newly designed equipments to photoresist stripping processes and obtained similar results to SPM(sulfuric-peroxide mixture) process characteristics.

  • An ultrasensitive and selective stripping voltammetric scheme for the determination of rhodium is described. By the use of combined accumulation and catalytic effects in formaldehyde-hydrochloric acid medium, substantial improvement in the limit of detection can be obtained. Optimal experimental conditions were found to be 0.42 M hydrochloric acid solution containing 0.008${\%}$ formaldehyde, an accumulation potential of -0.70 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) and an accumulation time of 20 s. The stripping mode was differential pulse voltammetry. In these conditions the limit of detection lies at 2 ${\times}$ l0$^{-12}$ M (0.21 ppt). The relative standard deviation at 5 ${\times}$ l0$^{-11}$ M was 4.9${\%}$ (n=5). There were no serious interferences from other platinum group metal ions being the tolerable amounts more than 500 times that of rhodium.

  • When a patient shows severe crowding, premolar extraction should be considered to provide required available space for alignment. If the third molars have already erupted and demonstrate a poor prognosis, third molar extraction and distalization of the posterior dentition can be used instead of premolar extraction to obtain space. Interproximal stripping (IPS) may also be used to gain space in cases of crowding. This case report describes the treatment of a 25-year-old man with severe crowding and mild lip protrusion. Although the crowding in the lower arch was severe enough to require first premolar extraction, distalization of the entire lower dentition with orthodontic mini-implants, extraction of the lower third molars, and IPS could successfully resolve the crowding and lip protrusion.

  • NGC 4522 is one of the best-known examples among the Virgo galaxies undergoing active ram pressure stripping. There have been a number of detailed observational and theoretical studies on this galaxy to constrain its stripping and star formation history. However, the impact of ram pressure on the multi-phased ISM, in particular molecular gas which plays an important role in star formation, is still not fully understood. NGC 4522, as a system where the extra-planar molecular gas is identified, is an ideal case to probe in depth how ram pressure affects molecular gas properties. Aiming to get more theoretical insights on the detailed stripping process of multi-phased ISM and its consequences, we have conducted simulations using the TIGRESS which could reproduce the realistic ISM under comparable conditions as NGC 4522. In this work, we compare the fraction of gas mass to stellar mass, star formation rates and gas depletion time scales of NGC 4522 with those measured from the simulations, not only inside the disk but also in the extra-planar space.
