  • The shear strength of unsaturated soils, a research hotspot in geotechnical engineering, has great guiding significance for geotechnical engineering design. Although kinds of calculation models for the shear strength of unsaturated soil have been put forward by predecessors, there is still need for new models to extensively consider the nonlinear variation of shear strength, particularly for the nonlinear effect of the net normal stress on the shear strength of unsaturated soil. Here, the shear strength of unsaturated soils is explored to study the nonlinear effects of net normal stress with the introduction of a general nonlinear Mohr-Coulomb (M-C) strength criterion, and the relationship between the matric suction (or suction stress) and degree of saturation (DOS) constructed by the soil-water characteristics curve (SWCC) of van Genuchten is also applied for unsaturated soil. Then, two calculation models (i.e., an envelope shell model and an effective stress model) are established for the shear strength of unsaturated soils under the nonlinear strength theory. In these two models, the curve of the shear strength of unsaturated soils versus the net normal stress exhibits a tendency to gently. Moreover, the proposed formulas have flexibility and convenience with five parameters (for the effective stress model) or six parameters (for the envelope shell model), which are from the M-C strength parameters of the saturated soil and fitting parameters of SWCC of van Genuchten. Thereafter, by comparison with the classical theory of the shear strength of unsaturated soils from some actual cases, the rationality and accuracy of the present models were verified.

  • The reliability and an estimate for it are derived for series-parallel and parallel-deries stress-strength model under assumption that all components are subjected to a common stress. We also obtain the asymptotic normal distribution of the estimate.

  • We treat problems of estimating reliability R(t) = P[Y(t) > X(t)] in the time dependent strength-stress model in which a unit of stress X(t) is subjected to environmental strength Y(t) at time t. In this paper we introduce a special model of R(t) with fixed strength and unaccumulated stress case, and propose a Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon type estimator of R(t).

  • The characteristics and prediction model for the shear strength of unsaturated residual soils was studied. In order to investigate the influence of the net normal stress on the shear strength, unsaturated triaxial tests and SWCC tests were carried out varying the net normal stress, and the experimental data for unsaturated shear strength tests were compared with predicted shear strength envelopes using existing prediction models. It was shown that the soil - water characteristic curve and the shear strength of the unsaturated soil varied with the change of the net normal stress. Therefore, to achieve a truly descriptive shear strength envelope for unsaturated soils, tile effect of the normal stress on the contribution of matric suction to the shear strength has to be taken into consideration. In this paper, a modified prediction model for the unsaturated shear strength was proposed.

  • The flow stress value was calculated by comparing predicted and measured roll force. Using basic on-line roll force model and logged mill data the flow stress equation of high strength steel for automobile was derived. The flow stress equation consists of the flow stress equation of carbon steel and flow stress factor calculated by neural network with input parameters not only carbon contents, strip temperature, strain, and strain rate, but also compositions such as Mn, p, Ti, Nb, and Mo. Using the flow stress equation and basic roll force model, precision roll force model of high strength steel for automobile was derived. Using test set of logged mill data the flow stress equation was verified.

  • We treat the problem of estimating reliability R(t) = P[Y(t) < X(t)] in the time dependent strength-stress model in which a unit of strength X(t) is subjected to environmental stress Y(t) at time t. In this paper two nonparametric approaches to estimate of R(t) are analyzed and compared with parametric method by simulation.

  • Stress-strength reliability problems arise frequently in applied statistics and related fields. In the context of reliability, the stress-strength model describes the life of a component, which has a random strength X and is subjected to random stress Y. The component fails at the instant that the stress applied to it exceeds the strength and the component will function satisfactorily whenever X > Y. The problem of estimation the reliability parameter in a stress-strength model R = P[Y < X], when X and Y are two independent two-parameter Lindley random variables is considered in this paper. The maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and Bayes estimator of R are obtained. Also, different confidence intervals of R are obtained. Simulation study is performed to compare the different proposed estimation methods. Example in real data is used as practical application of the proposed procedure.

  • In reliability analysis, the probability P(Y < X) is significant because it denotes availability and dependability in a stress-strength model where Y and X are the stress and strength variables, respectively. In reliability theory, the inverse Lomax distribution is a well-established lifetime model, and the literature is developing inference techniques for its reliability attributes. In this article, we are interested in estimating the stress-strength reliability R = P(Y < X), where X and Y have an unknown common scale parameter and follow the inverse Lomax distribution. Using Bayesian and non-Bayesian approaches, we discuss this issue when both stress and strength are expressed in terms of lower record values. The parametric bootstrapping techniques of R are taken into consideration. The stress-strength reliability estimator is investigated using uniform and gamma priors with several loss functions. Based on the proposed loss functions, the reliability R is estimated using Bayesian analyses with Gibbs and Metropolis-Hasting samplers. Monte Carlo simulation studies and real-data-based examples are also performed to analyze the behavior of the proposed estimators. We analyze electrical insulating fluids, particularly those used in transformers, for data sets using the stress-strength model. In conclusion, as expected, the study's results showed that the mean squared error values decreased as the record number increased. In most cases, Bayesian estimates under the precautionary loss function are more suitable in terms of simulation conclusions than other specified loss functions.

  • We consider the stress-strength model in which a unit of strength $T_2$ is subjected to environmental stress $T_1$. An important measure considered in stress-strength model is the reliability parameter R=P($T_2$ > $T_1$). The greater the value of R is, the more reliable is the unit to perform its specified task. In this article, we consider the situations in which $T_1$ and $T_2$ are both independent and dependent, and have certain bivariate distributions as their joint distributions. To study the effect of dependency on R, we investigate several bivariate distributions of $T_1$ and $T_2$ and compare the values of R for these distributions. Numerical comparisons are presented depending on the parameter values as well.

  • Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) jackets have been widely used as an effective tool for the strengthening and rehabilitation of concrete structures, especially damaged concrete columns. Therefore, a clear understanding of the compressive behavior of FRP-confined concrete is essential. The objective of this paper is to develop a simple efficient method for predicting the compressive strength, the axial strain at the peak stress, and the stress-strain relationship of FRP-confined concrete. In this method, a compressive strength model is established based on Jefferson's failure surface. With the proposed strength model, the strength of FRP-confined concrete can be estimated more precisely. The axial strain at the peak stress is then evaluated using a damage-based formula. Finally, a modified stress-strain relationship is derived based on Lam and Teng's model. The validity of the proposed compressive strength and strain models and the modified stress-strain relationship is verified with a wide range of experimental results collected from the research literature and obtained from the self-conducted test. It can be concluded that, as a competitive alternative, the proposed method can be used to predict the compressive behavior of FRP-confined concrete with reasonable accuracy.
