  • This paper presents sensitivity analysis results of strain on notches under cycling loading to 2-D finite element density considering plasticity. Cylindrical notched specimens having some stress concentrations were modeled with 2-D axisymmetrical finite element having various finite element densities. Elasto-plastic finite element analysis was performed for the various finite element models subjected to cycling loading considering plasticity. The finite element analysis results were compared to investigate sensitivity of the finite element analysis variables such as von-Mises effective stress, accumulated equivalent plastic strain, and equivalent plastic strain to 2-D finite element density. As a result of the comparison, it was found that the accumulated equivalent plastic strain is more sensitive than the others whereas the von-Mises effective stress is much less sensitive.

  • This paper is concerned with the thermo-mechanical behavior including temperature dependent strain-rate sensitivity of steel sheet for an auto-body. In order to identify the temperature dependent strain-rate sensitivity of SPRC35R and SPRC45E, uniaxial tension tests are performed with the variation of the strain-rates from 0.001 /sec to 200 /sec at environmental temperatures varied from $-40^{\circ}C\;to\;200^{\circ}C$. The thermo-mechanical response at the quasi-static state is obtained with the static tensile test and at the intermediate strain-rate is from the high speed tensile test. Experimental results show that the strain-rate sensitivity increases at low temperature. It represents that as the strain-rate increases, the variation of flow stress becomes sensitive on the temperature. The results indicate that the flow stress of SPRC35R is more dependent on the changes of strain-rate and temperature than those of SPRC45E.

  • Enhancement methods of sensitivity to in-plane strain measurement by micro-ESPI(Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry) technique were proposed using TiN and Au thin films. Micro-tensile strain over the micro-tensile specimens, prepared in micro-scale by those films, was measured by micro-tensile loading system and micro-ESPI system developed in this study. The subsequent measurement of in-plane tensile strain in the micro-sized specimens was introduced using the micro-ESPI technique, and the micro-tensile stress-strain curves for these films were determined. To enhance the sensitivity to measurement of in-plane tensile strain, algorithms of the phase estimation by using curve fitting of inter-fringe and the discrete Fourier Transform with object-induced dynamic phase shifting were developed. Using these two algorithms, the micro-tensile strain-stress curves were generated. It is shown that the algorithms for enhancement of the sensitivity suggested in this study make the sensitivity to measurement of the in-plane tensile strain increase.

  • Shot ball impacts to materials cause residual compressive stress on their surfaces. Improving the fatigue strength of a material that has this residual compress stress is the purpose of the shot peening process. A numerical study was performed to evaluate the effect of the strain rate sensitivity and hardness of the shot ball on the residual compressive stress. We calculated the residual compressive stress due to multiple impact shot peening using ABAQUS 6.9-1. AISI 4340 steel was the material used in this study. We compared the effects of high strain rate sensitivities and low strain rate sensitivities and found that when the material's sensitivity to the strain rate increased, the residual compressive stress decreased. In addition, the residual compressive stress of low-hardness material is higher than that of high-hardness material.

  • The primary aim of this study is to find out the relationship of examination stress with serum cortisol and prolatin levels. 20 male medical students participated in this study. Global assessment of recent stress (GARS) scale and SCL-90R were used to measure stress perception and psychopathology. Radioimmunoassay was used to assess serum cortisol and prolactin. Serum cortisol level was significantly higher during exam period than during nonexam period. However, there was no significant difference in serum prolactin level between the two periods. In psychopathology, only interpersonal sensitivity had a significantly negative correlation with serum cortisol level during exam period. On the other hand, stress perception had no significant correlation with serum cortisol and prolactin levels during each of exam and non-exam period. The results suggest that cortisol is more likely to be associated with psychological stress such as examination than prolactin, and that specific psychopathology such as interpersonal sensitivity is more likely to be associated with lower serum cortisol level.

  • This research aims at examining the relationships between mother-toddler interaction and its related variables. A total of 49 toddlers and their mothers were participated and observed in the child lab during free play. The main results of this study are as follows. First, among the mother-toddler interaction, 'involvement' was frequently used in comparison with the 'rejection' was the hardly used in their interaction. Second, the mothers' sensitivity, parenting stress, and the mother-toddler interaction had no significant difference by the mothers' job status or gender of toddlers. However, their parenting stress was lower in working mothers or mothers who have girls. Third, mother-toddler interaction was significantly correlated with the mothers' sensitivity, parenting stress, parenting style, and the temperament of toddlers. On the basis of this results, the implication related to the variables influencing mother-toddler interaction was discussed.

  • This paper is concerned with the empirical flow stress constitutive equation of steel sheets for an auto-body with the variation of temperature and strain rate. In order to represent the strain rate and temperature dependent behavior of the flow stress at the intermediate strain rates accurately, an empirical hardening equation is suggested by modifying the well-known Khan-Huang-Liang model. The temperature and strain rate dependent sensitivity of the flow stress at the intermediate strain rate is considered in the hardening equation by coupling the strain, the strain rate and the temperature. The hardening equation suggested gives good correlation with experimental results at various intermediate strain rates and temperatures. In order to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the suggested model quantitatively, the standard deviation of the fitted result from the experimental one is compared with those of the other two well-known empirical constitutive models such as the Johnson-Cook and the Khan-Huang-Liang models. The comparison demonstrates that the suggested model gives relatively well description of experimental results at various strain rates and temperatures.

  • BRAF inhibitors are insufficient monotherapies for BRAF-mutated cancer; therefore, we investigated which inhibitory pathway would yield the most effective therapeutic approach when targeted in combination with BRAF inhibition. The oncogenic BRAF inhibitor, PLX4720, increased basal autophagic flux in BRAF-mutated cells compared to wild-type (WT) BRAF cells. Interestingly, early autophagy inhibition improved the effectiveness of PLX4720 regardless of BRAF mutation, whereas late autophagy inhibition did not. Although ATG5 knockout led to PLX4720 resistance in both WT and BRAF-mutated cells, the MEK inhibitor trametinib exhibited a synergistic effect on PLX4720 sensitivity in WT BRAF cells but not in BRAF-mutated cells. Conversely, the prolonged inhibition of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress reduced basal autophagy in BRAF-mutated cells, thereby increasing PLX4720 sensitivity. Taken together, our results suggest that the combined inhibition of ER stress and BRAF may simultaneously suppress both pro-survival ER stress and autophagy, and may therefore be suitable for treatment of BRAF-mutated tumors whose autophagy is increased by chronic ER stress. Similarly, for WT BRAF tumors, therapies targeting MEK signaling may be a more effective treatment strategy. Together, this study presents a rational combination treatment strategy to improve the efficacy of BRAF inhibitors depending on BRAF mutation status.

  • This paper presents an experimental investigation regarding the sensitivity of electrical impedance of a steel wire to tensile stress, ambient temperature and induced frequency. For various stress levels and temperatures, the electrical impedance of a steel wire has been measured on a self-sensing system. The three experimental cases are carried out at various temperature conditions, stress levels and applied frequencies. If the temperature increases and stress level decreases at a given frequency, the electrical impedance on the steel wire increases. The results show that the correlation between electrical impedance and temperature is a linear relationship at all stress levels. It is noted that the sensitivity of impedance to temperature is much higher than the stress.

  • Survival factor 1 (Svf1) is a protein involved in cell survival pathways. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Svf1 is required for the diauxic growth shift and survival under stress conditions. In this study, we characterized the role of FgSvf1, the Svf1 homolog in the homothallic ascomycete fungus Fusarium graminearum. In the FgSvf1 deletion mutant, conidial germination was delayed, vegetative growth was reduced, and pathogenicity was completely abolished. Although the FgSvf1 deletion mutant produced perithecia, the normal maturation of ascospore was dismissed in deletion mutant. The FgSvf1 deletion mutant also showed reduced resistance to osmotic, fungicide, and cold stress and reduced sensitivity to oxidative stress when compared to the wild-type strain. In addition, we showed that FgSvf1 affects glycolysis, which results in the abnormal vegetative growth in the FgSvf1 deletion mutant. Further, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulated in the FgSvf1 deletion mutant, and this accumulated ROS might be related to the reduced sensitivity to oxidative stress and the reduced resistance to cold stress and fungicide stress. Overall, understanding the role of FgSvf1 in F. graminearum provides a new target to control F. graminearum infections in fields.
