  • Focal mechanisms were analyzed for the seven earthquakes which occurred in the southwestern part of the Korea Peninsula from 2001 to 2005. Grid searches are performed to fit distributions of P-wave first-motion polarities and SH/P amplitude ratios for each event. The focal mechanism solutions imply that most of the events have strike-slip sense including partially thrust component. The compressional axes of the solutions are predominantly ENE-WSW or NE-SW indirections. This result is similar to the directions of the principal compressional axes for major earthquakes occurred around the Korea Peninsula.

  • Theoretical mechanics analysis and finite element simulation were performed to investigate creep deformation behavior at the crack tip of transversely isotropic materials under small scale creep (SCC) conditions. Mechanical behavior of material was assumed as an elastic-$2^{nd}$ creep, which elastic modulus ( E ), Poisson's ratio ( ${\nu}$ ) and creep stress exponent ( n ) were isotropic and creep coefficient was only transversely isotropic. Based on the mechanics analysis for material behavior, a constitutive equation for transversely isotropic creep behavior was formulated and an equivalent creep coefficient was proposed under plain strain conditions. Creep deformation behavior at the crack tip was investigated through the finite element analysis. The results of the finite element analysis showed that creep deformation in transversely isotropic materials is dominant at the rear of the crack-tip. This result was more obvious when a load was applied to principal axis of anisotropy. Based on the results of the mechanics analysis and the finite element simulation, a corrected estimation scheme of the creep zone size was proposed in order to evaluate the creep deformation behavior at the crack tip of transversely isotropic creeping materials.

  • Two dimensional numerical investigations were carried out to study the influence of interface thickness and their pattern on the behavior of reinforced concrete frames subjected to in-plane lateral loads using commercial finite element tool SAP 2000. The linear elastic analysis was carried out on one and two bay structural systems as well as the influence of number of stories was studied by varying the number of stories as single, three and five. The cement mortar was used as interface material and their effect was studied by varying thicknesses as 6, 8, 10, 14 and 20 mm. The interface was recognized as one sided, two sided, three sided and four sided and their effect was studied by removing the interface material between the reinforced concrete frame and masonry infill. The effect of lateral loads on infill masonry wall was also studied by varying assumed loads as 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 kN. The behavior of infilled frames studied has revealed that there is a maximum influence of interface thickness and interface pattern corresponding to 10 mm thickness. In general, the lateral displacement of frame is increased linearly with increase in lateral loads.

  • Jute is the principal coarse fiber for commercial production and use in Bangladesh. Therefore, the development of a high-yielding and environmental-stress tolerant jute variety would be beneficial for the agro economy of Bangladesh. Two molecular fingerprinting techniques, random-amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and amplified-fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) were applied on six jute samples. Two of them were cold-sensitive varieties and the remaining four were cold-tolerant accessions. RAPD and AFLP fingerprints were employed to generate polymorphism between the cold-sensitive varieties and cold-tolerant accessions because of their simplicity, and also because there is no available sequence information on jute. RAPD data were obtained by using 30 arbitrary oligonucleotide primers. Five primers were found to give polymorphism between the varieties that were tested. AFLP fingerprints were generated using 25 combinations of selective-amplification primers. Eight primer combinations gave the best results with 93 polymorphic fragments, and they were able to discriminate the two cold-sensitive and four cold-tolerant jute populations. A cluster analysis, based on the RAPD and AFLP fingerprint data, showed the population-specific grouping of individuals. This information could be useful later in marker-aided selection between the cold-sensitive varieties and cold-tolerant jute accessions.

  • In this research mass of a plane strain two dimensional elastic concrete dam under gravitational and hydrostatic loads is minimized, through shape optimization of the dam cross section. Cross sectional area of the dam is taken as cost function of the optimization problem while constraints on the principal stress distribution and dam thickness are imposed. Shape of the boundary of the model is chosen as design variable. Variational formulation of the optimization problem, the material derivative idea of continuum mechanics, and an adjoint variable method are employed for the shape design sensitivity calculation. Then the gradient projection algorithm is utilized to obtain an optimum design iteratively. Research results fully demonstrate that the theory and procedure adopted are quite efficient and can be applicable to a wide class of practical elastic structural design problems.

  • The principal trends in the course of emission control legislation are reviewed in this paper. In order to keep such a regulation, moreover, an inquiry ito the concrete technical possibility is conducted through review articles, Also, the composition of exhaust gases emitted from a marine diesel engine are investigated as several samples and the measures that can satisfy the value of regulation are handled with laying stress on the control methods discussed to date. It was concluded that various combined systems can be made to reduce NOx emissions without deteriorating substantially navigation costs since many technologies for reducing NOx emissions are being developed. All heat engines suffer from SOx emissions. There are two methods for reducing SOx emissions: desulfurization from exhaust gas and removal of sulfur composition from fuel oil. However it is necessary to watch the development of these technologies to evaluate which method is more favorable. Heat engines have a big problem in the regulation of environmental pollution from exhaust emissions. In the near future, however, diesel engines may be superior to other heat engines, owing to the high thermal efficiency, although the sales of individual models in dises engines may be prosperous and declining.

  • Asymmetric creep behaviors of ceramics under high temperature were investigated. Based on the Norton's power-low creep equation, multidirectional creep equations were proposed for general geometric loading conditions. The proposed equations were implemented into finite element program (ABAQUS) to simulate creep behaviors of ceramics in complicated loading conditions. The calculated results were compared with experimental data for uniaxial compression of Si-SiC C-ring and flexure of Si-SiC and $Al_2O_3$ in the literature. The finite element results agreed well with experimental data when the principal stresses are smaller than the threshold stress for creep damage. A good agreement was also obtained for damage zone in Si-SiC bending creep specimen compared with experimental data.

  • This is a research analyses on the bearing capacity at a pile tip embedded in rock. The aim is to propose a shape coefficient for an analytical solution and to investigate the influence of the plastic flow law on the problem. For this purpose, the finite difference method is used to analyze the bearing capacity of various types and states of rock masses, assuming the Hoek & Brown failure criterion, by considering both plane strain and an axisymmetric model. Different geometrical configurations were adopted for this analysis. First, the axisymmetric numerical results were compared with those obtained from the plane strain analytical solution. Then the pile shape influence on the bearing capacity was studied. A shape factor is now proposed. Furthermore, an evaluation was done on the influence of the plastic flow law on the pile tip bearing capacity. Associative flow and non-associative flow with null dilatancy were considered, resulting in a proposed correlation. A total of 324 cases were simulated, performing a sensitivity analysis on the results and using the graphic output of vertical displacement and maximum principal stress to understand how the failure mechanism occurs in the numerical model.
