염분 섭취에 의한 시스플라틴 유도 급성 신장 손상의 촉진과 염증 반응과의 연관성 (Facilitation of cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury by high salt intake through increased inflammatory response)

  • A high salt diet contributes to kidney damage by causing hypoxia and oxidative stress. Recently, an increase in dietary salt has been reported to induce an inflammatory phenotype in immune cells, further contributing to kidney damage. However, studies on the exact mechanism and role of a high salt diet on the inflammatory response in the kidneys are still insufficient. In this study, a cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury model using C57BL/6 mice was used to analyze the effect of salt intake on kidney injury. Results showed that high salt administration aggravated kidney edema in mice induced by treatment with cisplatin. Moreover, the indicators of kidney and liver function impairment were significantly increased in the group cotreated with high salt compared with that treated with cisplatin alone. Furthermore, the exacerbation of kidney damage by high salt administration was also associated with a decrease in the number of cells in the immune regulatory system. Additionally, high salt administration further decreased renal perfusion functions along with increased cisplatin-induced damage to proximal tubules. This was accompanied by increased expression of T cell immunoglobulin, mucin domain 1 (a biomarker of kidney injury), and Bax (a pro-apoptotic factor). Moreover, cisplatin-induced expression of proinflammatory mediators and cytokines, including cyclooxygenase-2 and tumor necrosis factor-α in kidney tissue, was further increased by high salt intake. Therefore, these results indicate that the kidney's inflammatory response by high salt treatment can further promote kidney damage caused by various pathological factors.

Gynostemma pentaphyllum extract and Gypenoside L enhance skeletal muscle differentiation and mitochondrial metabolism by activating the PGC-1α pathway in C2C12 myotubes

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma co-activator-1α (PGC-1α) has a central role in regulating muscle differentiation and mitochondrial metabolism. PGC-1α stimulates muscle growth and muscle fiber remodeling, concomitantly regulating lactate and lipid metabolism and promoting oxidative metabolism. Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Thumb.) has been widely employed as a traditional herbal medicine and possesses antioxidant, anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory, hypolipemic, hypoglycemic, and anticancer properties. We investigated whether G. pentaphyllum extract (GPE) and its active compound, gypenoside L (GL), affect muscle differentiation and mitochondrial metabolism via activation of the PGC-1α pathway in murine C2C12 myoblast cells. MATERIALS/METHODS: C2C12 cells were treated with GPE and GL, and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and western blot were used to analyze the mRNA and protein expression levels. Myh1 was determined using immunocytochemistry. Mitochondrial reactive oxygen species generation was measured using the 2'7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate assay. RESULTS: GPE and GL promoted the differentiation of myoblasts into myotubes and elevated mRNA and protein expression levels of Myh1 (type IIx). GPE and GL also significantly increased the mRNA expression levels of the PGC-1α gene (Ppargc1a), lactate metabolism-regulatory genes (Esrra and Mct1), adipocyte-browning gene fibronectin type III domain-containing 5 gene (Fndc5), glycogen synthase gene (Gys), and lipid metabolism gene carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1b gene (Cpt1b). Moreover, GPE and GL induced the phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase, p38, sirtuin1, and deacetylated PGC-1α. We also observed that treatment with GPE and GL significantly stimulated the expression of genes associated with the anti-oxidative stress response, such as Ucp2, Ucp3, Nrf2, and Sod2. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicated that GPE and GL enhance exercise performance by promoting myotube differentiation and mitochondrial metabolism through the upregulation of PGC-1α in C2C12 skeletal muscle.

안면 홍조 증상을 수반한 중년 우울증 여성의 특성 (Characteristics of Middle Aged Depressed Women with Hot Flushes)

  • 연구목적 중년 우울증 여성은 안면 홍조 증상을 자주 경험한다. 우울증과 안면 홍조 간의 연관성은 아직 명확하지 않다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 안면 홍조가 있는 우울증 여성과 안면 홍조가 없는 우울증 여성을 대상으로 호르몬 농도, 기능적 신체 증상, 폐경에 대한 태도 및 스트레스대처 방식을 비교하여 그 특성에 대해 알아보고자 하였다. 방 법 안면 홍조가 있는 우울증 여성 33명과 안면 홍조가 없는 우울증 여성 33명이 연구에 참여하였다. 안면 홍조 증상은 일주일에 걸쳐 전향적으로 일일 증상 척도를 통해 확인하였다. 연구 대상자의 스트레스 대처 방식은 스트레스 대처 방식 설문지를 통해 평가하였다. 신체 증상은 환자 건강 설문지(Patient Health Questionnaire-15, PHQ-15)로 평가하였다. 성 호르몬 농도는 방사성면역분석법으로 측정하였다. 간편 세계보건기구 삶의 질 평가도구(Brief World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment Instrument, WHOQOL-BREF)를 이용하여 삶의 질을 평가하였다. 결 과 스트레스 대처 방식에 있어서, 안면 홍조가 있는 우울증 여성이 문제-중심의 대처 방식과($13.15{\pm}3.17$) 사회적 지지에 대한 탐색($11.83{\pm}2.84$) 항목이 안면 홍조 증상이 없는 우울증 여성에 비해 적었다(각각 $15.17{\pm}3.1$, p=0.028 ; $14.25{\pm}3.22$, p=0.009). 안면 홍조가 있는 우울증 여성이 폐경 후에 대하여 상대적으로 부정적 태도를 보였으나, 통계적 유의성은 근사치로 불충분하였다(p=0.059). 본 연구에서는 PHQ-15로 평가한 신체 증상과 성호르몬 농도에서 두 군 간의 차이를 발견하지 못 하였다. WHOQOL-BREF에 따른 사회적 대인 관계의 점수는 안면 홍조가 없는 군보다($9.71{\pm}1.65$ ; p=0.044) 안면 홍조가 있는 군에서($8.62{\pm}2.04$) 유의하게 낮았다. 결 론 우울증이 있는 중년 여성에서, 안면 홍조 증상은 스트레스에 대한 대처 방식의 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 우울증 여성에서 안면 홍조 증상은 삶의 질에 부정적 영향을 주므로, 임상가는 안면 홍조가 있는 우울증 환자에서 적극적으로 안면 홍조에 대하여 치료적인 접근을 해야 할 것이다. 항우울제 혹은 소량의 호르몬 치료에 반응이 없는 우울증 환자에서, 인지 행동 치료 또는 스트레스 관리가 효과적일 수 있겠다. 추후 안면 홍조 및 우울증과 관련된 위험 요인에 대한 인과 관계를 명확하게 하기 위해서는 객관적인 방법을 통한 종적 연구가 필요할 것으로 생각된다.

제주도 현무암에 포획된 세립질 맨틀 페리도타이트 포획암의 조직적 특성 (Textural Implications of Fine-Grained Peridotite Xenoliths in Basaltic Rocks from Jeju Island)

  • 제주도 동남부 신산리 해안가에 분포하는 현무암에 세립질의 맨틀 페리도타이트가 드물게 포획되어 있으며, 반상쇄정 잔류물의 거정질 입자와 세립질의 입자로 구성된 조직적 특성에 의해 반상쇄정의 페리도타이트 맨틀포획암(FPP)으로 정의된다. 조사되어진 FPP들의 서로 유사한 조직적 특성과 주성분원소 조성은 FPP가 하나의 구조 영역에서 유래했음을 지시한다. 또한 킹크밴드를 가지는 거정의 반상쇄정($2{\sim}3mm$) 사이에 변형의 흔적이 없는 세립질의 입자($200{\sim}300{\mu}m$)로 구성된 쌍봉분포, 삼중점과 직선형의 입자경계, 간극사이에 형성된 멜트포켓, 입자경계가 이동했음을 나타내는 미세구조 등은 FPP가 동력재결정작용 ${\pm}$ 정적재결정작용을 경험하였음을 반영하고 있다. 이러한 변형사건에는 멜트/유체의 이동이 있었으며, 특히 엽리면을 따라 일어났다. 신산리 지역에 가장 흔하게 산출되는 프로토그라뉼라 조직의 맨틀포획암과 FPP는 매우 유사한 주성분원소 조성을 보이는데, 이는 FPP가 프로토그라뉼라 조직의 포획암과 비슷한 상부맨틀 깊이에 위치하고 있었음을 나타낸다. 이러한 FPP의 조직적 특성과 주성분원소 조성은 FPP가 지엽적인 소규모의 좁은 영역에 관여한 변형사건을 경험하였음을 나타낸다. 이 변형사건의 실체에 대한 것은 앞으로 좀 더 연구가 진행되어야 할 것이나, 제주도가 만들어지기 이전의 상부맨틀 암석권에서 마그마의 상승과 관련된 단층작용에 의해 형성되었을 가능성을 제시한다.

Prosodic Phrasing and Focus in Korea

  • Purpose: Some of the properties of the prosodic phrasing and some acoustic and phonological effects of contrastive focus on the tonal pattern of Seoul Korean is explored based on a brief experiment of analyzing the fundamental frequency(=FO) contour of the speech of the author. Data Base and Analysis Procedures: The examples were chosen to contain mostly nasal and liquid consonants, since it is difficult to track down the formants in stops and fricatives during their corresponding consonantal intervals and stops may yield an effect of unwanted increase in the FO value due to their burst into the following vowel. All examples were recorded three times and the spectrum of the most stable repetition was generated, from which the FO contour of each sentence was obtained, the peaks with a value higher than 250Hz being interpreted as a high tone (=H). The result is then discussed within the prosodic hierarchy framework of Selkirk (1986) and compared with the tonal pattern of the Northern Kyungsang dialect of Korean reported in Kenstowicz & Sohn (1996). Prosodic Phrasing: In N.K. Korean, H never appears both on the object and on the verb in a neutral sentence, which indicates the object and the verb form a single Phonological Phrase ($={\phi}$), given that there is only one pitch peak for each $={\phi}$. However, Seoul Korean shows that both the object and the verb have H of their own, indicating that they are not contained in one $={\phi}$. This violates the Optimality constraint of Wrap-XP (=Enclose a lexical head and its arguments in one $={\phi}$), while N.K. Korean obeys the constraint by grouping a VP in a single $={\phi}$. This asymmetry can be resolved through a constraint that favors the separate grouping of each lexical category and is ranked higher than Wrap-XP in Seoul Korean but vice versa in N.K. Korean; $Align-x^{lex}$ (=Align the left edge of a lexical category with that of a $={\phi}$). (1) nuna-ka manll-ll mEk-nIn-ta ('sister-NOM garlic-ACC eat-PRES-DECL') a. (LLH) (LLH) (HLL) ----Seoul Korean b. (LLH) (LLL LHL) ----N.K. Korean Focus and Phrasing: Two major effects of contrastive focus on phonological phrasing are found in Seoul Korean: (a) the peak of an Intonatioanl Phrase (=IP) falls on the focused element; and (b) focus has the effect of deleting all the following prosodic structures. A focused element always attracts the peak of IP, showing an increase of approximately 30Hz compared with the peak of a non-focused IP. When a subject is focused, no H appears either on the object or on the verb and a focused object is never followed by a verb with H. The post-focus deletion of prosodic boundaries is forced through the interaction of StressFocus (=If F is a focus and DF is its semantic domain, the highest prominence in DF will be within F) and Rightmost-IP (=The peak of an IP projects from the rightmost $={\phi}$). First Stress-F requires the peak of IP to fall on the focused element. Then to avoid violating Rightmost-IP, all the boundaries after the focused element should delete, minimizing the number of $={\phi}$'s intervening from the right edge of IP. (2) (omitted) Conclusion: In general, there seems to be no direct alignment constraints between the syntactically focused element and the edge of $={\phi}$ determined in phonology; all the alignment effects come from a single requirement that the peak of IP projects from the rightmost $={\phi}$ as proposed in Truckenbrodt (1995).

  • Cryptococcus neoformans causes life-threatening meningoencephalitis in humans, but the treatment of cryptococcosis remains challenging. To develop novel therapeutic targets and approaches, signaling cascades controlling pathogenicity of C. neoformans have been extensively studied but the underlying biological regulatory circuits remain elusive, particularly due to the presence of an evolutionarily divergent set of transcription factors (TFs) in this basidiomycetous fungus. In this study, we constructed a high-quality of 322 signature-tagged gene deletion strains for 155 putative TF genes, which were previously predicted using the DNA-binding domain TF database (http://www.transcriptionfactor.org/). We tested in vivo and in vitro phenotypic traits under 32 distinct growth conditions using 322 TF gene deletion strains. At least one phenotypic trait was exhibited by 145 out of 155 TF mutants (93%) and approximately 85% of the TFs (132/155) have been functionally characterized for the first time in this study. Through high-coverage phenome analysis, we discovered myriad novel TFs that play critical roles in growth, differentiation, virulence-factor (melanin, capsule, and urease) formation, stress responses, antifungal drug resistance, and virulence. Large-scale virulence and infectivity assays in insect (Galleria mellonella) and mouse host models identified 34 novel TFs that are critical for pathogenicity. The genotypic and phenotypic data for each TF are available in the C. neoformans TF phenome database (http://tf.cryptococcus.org). In conclusion, our phenome-based functional analysis of the C. neoformans TF mutant library provides key insights into transcriptional networks of basidiomycetous fungi and ubiquitous human fungal pathogens.

Comparison of Cognitive Loads between Koreans and Foreigners in the Reading Process

  • Objective: This study aims to measure cognitive load levels by analyzing the EEG of Koreans and foreigners, when they read a Korean text with care selected by level from the grammar and vocabulary aspects, and compare the cognitive load levels through quantitative values. The study results can be utilized as basic data for more scientific approach, when Korean texts or books are developed, and an evaluation method is built, when the foreigners encounter them for learning or an assignment. Background: Based on 2014, the number of the foreign students studying in Korea was 84,801, and they increase annually. Most of them are from Asian region, and they come to Korea to enter a university or a graduate school in Korea. Because those foreign students aim to learn within Universities in Korea, they receive Korean education from their preparation for study in Korea. To enter a university in Korea, they must acquire grade 4 or higher level in the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK), or they need to complete a certain educational program at each university's affiliated language institution. In such a program, the learners of the Korean language receive Korean education based on texts, except speaking domain, and the comprehension of texts can determine their academic achievements in studying after they enter their desired schools (Jeon, 2004). However, many foreigners, who finish a language course for the short-term, and need to start university study, cannot properly catch up with university classes requiring expertise with the vocabulary and grammar levels learned during the language course. Therefore, reading education, centered on a strategy to understand university textbooks regarded as top level reading texts to the foreigners, is necessary (Kim and Shin, 2015). This study carried out an experiment from a perspective that quantitative data on the readers of the main player of reading education and teaching materials need to be secured to back up the need for reading education for university study learners, and scientifically approach educational design. Namely, this study grasped the difficulty level of reading through the measurement of cognitive loads indicated in the reading activity of each text by dividing the difficulty of a teaching material (book) into eight levels, and the main player of reading into Koreans and foreigners. Method: To identify cognitive loads indicated upon reading Korean texts with care by Koreans and foreigners, this study recruited 16 participants (eight Koreans and eight foreigners). The foreigners were limited to the language course students studying the intermediate level Korean course at university-affiliated language institutions within Seoul Metropolitan Area. To identify cognitive load, as they read a text by level selected from the Korean books (difficulty: eight levels) published by King Sejong Institute (Sejonghakdang.org), the EEG sensor was attached to the frontal love (Fz) and occipital lobe (Oz). After the experiment, this study carried out a questionnaire survey to measure subjective evaluation, and identified the comprehension and difficulty on grammar and words. To find out the effects on schema that may affect text comprehension, this study controlled the Korean texts, and measured EEG and subjective satisfaction. Results: To identify brain's cognitive load, beta band was extracted. As a result, interactions (Fz: p =0.48; Oz: p =0.00) were revealed according to Koreans and foreigners, and difficulty of the text. The cognitive loads of Koreans, the readers whose mother tongue is Korean, were lower in reading Korean texts than those of the foreigners, and the foreigners' cognitive loads became higher gradually according to the difficulty of the texts. From the text four, which is intermediate level in difficulty, remarkable differences started to appear in comparison of the Koreans and foreigners in the beginner's level text. In the subjective evaluation, interactions were revealed according to the Koreans and foreigners and text difficulty (p =0.00), and satisfaction was lower, as the difficulty of the text became higher. Conclusion: When there was background knowledge in reading, namely schema was formed, the comprehension and satisfaction of the texts were higher, although higher levels of vocabulary and grammar were included in the texts than those of the readers. In the case of a text in which the difficulty of grammar was felt high in the subjective evaluation, foreigners' cognitive loads were also high, which shows the result of the loads' going up higher in proportion to the increase of difficulty. This means that the grammar factor functions as a stress factor to the foreigners' reading comprehension. Application: This study quantitatively evaluated the cognitive loads of Koreans and foreigners through EEG, based on readers and the text difficulty, when they read Korean texts. The results of this study can be used for making Korean teaching materials or Korean education content and topic selection for foreigners. If research scope is expanded to reading process using an eye-tracker, the reading education program and evaluation method for foreigners can be developed on the basis of quantitative values.

경상분지 북동부의 제3기 결정질 응회암에서 발달하는 미세균열의 분포특성 (Distributional Characteristics of Microcrack in Tertiary Crystalline Tuff from Northeastern Gyeongsang Basin)

  • 경상분지 북동부 일대의 제3기 결정질 응회암에서 발달하는 미세균열의 빈도수, 길이 및 밀도에 대한 분포특성을 도출하였다. 포항시 흥해읍 지역에서 채취한 3개 암석시료의 수평면 상에서 발달하는 134조의 미세균열은 박편의 확대사진을 통하여 구별하였다. 채취지점의 고도를 달리하는 3개 암석시료에 대한 미세균열의 길이-빈도 히스토그램에 대한 형태의 변화성을 도출하였다. 히스토그램들의 분포형태는 암석시료의 고도와 비례하여 음의 지수함수의 분포형에서 대수-정규의 분포형으로 점변한다. 다른 암석시료보다 고도가 낮은 암석시료 1의 분포형태는 넓은 길이분포를 보여주며, 다른 암석시료에 비하여 평균길이와 중앙값, 그리고 표준 편차가 높은 것이 특징이다. 한편 이와 같은 분포특성은 하부 경상누층군의 퇴적암에서 발달하는 절리의 길이분포와 부합한다. $N0{\sim}10^{\circ}W$의 방향을 중심으로 하여 NW 및 NE의 양쪽 방향으로 갈수록 보다 길이가 짧은 미세균열의 출현빈도수는 증가하며, $N80{\sim}90^{\circ}W$$N80{\sim}90^{\circ}E$의 방향에서 각각 우세하다. 이러한 분포특성은 미세균열 조들 사이의 생성시기의 상대적인 차이 그리고 보다 짧은 미세균열의 신규 발생을 의미한다. 한편 $N60{\sim}70^{\circ}W$(최대길이:1.18 mm) 및 $N0{\sim}10^{\circ}W$(최대길이:0.80 mm)의 방향에서는 길이가 가장 긴 미세균열을 볼 수 있으며, 이러한 유형의 미세균열은 빈도수에 비하여 숫적으로 매우 제한적이다. 방향각($\theta$)-빈도수(N), 총길이($L_t$), 평균길이($L_m$) 및 밀도($\rho$)의 종합 분포도의 전 영역은 상관곡선의 형태에 의거, 5개의 구간으로 분류할 수가 있다. 분포도에서 밀도곡선은 서북서-동남동($N70{\sim}80^{\circ}W$), 남-북~북북동-남남서($N0{\sim}10^{\circ}W/N10{\sim}20^{\circ}E$), 동북동-서남서($N50{\sim}60^{\circ}E$) 그리고 거의 동-서($N80{\sim}90^{\circ}E$)의 방향에서 각각 5개의 뚜렷한 정점을 보여준다. 특히 단층의 주방향은 밀도가 높은 방향각과 부합한다. 결과적으로 밀도곡선의 이러한 분포형태는 기존의 연구에서 시사한 대표적인 최대 주응력 방향을 반영한다.

Interface structure and anisotropic strain relaxation of nonpolar a-GaN on r-sapphire

  • The growth of the high-quality GaN epilayers is of significant technological importance because of their commercializedoptoelectronic applications as high-brightness light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs) in the visible and ultraviolet spectral range. The GaN-based heterostructural epilayers have the polar c-axis of the hexagonal structure perpendicular to the interfaces of the active layers. The Ga and N atoms in the c-GaN are alternatively stacked along the polar [0001] crystallographic direction, which leads to spontaneous polarization. In addition, in the InGaN/GaN MQWs, the stress applied along the same axis contributes topiezoelectric polarization, and thus the total polarization is determined as the sum of spontaneous and piezoelectric polarizations. The total polarization in the c-GaN heterolayers, which can generate internal fields and spatial separation of the electron and hole wave functions and consequently a decrease of efficiency and peak shift. One of the possible solutions to eliminate these undesirable effects is to grow GaN-based epilayers in nonpolar orientations. The polarization effects in the GaN are eliminated by growing the films along the nonpolar [$11\bar{2}0$] ($\alpha$-GaN) or [$1\bar{1}00$] (m-GaN) orientation. Although the use of the nonpolar epilayers in wurtzite structure clearly removes the polarization matters, however, it induces another problem related to the formation of a high density of planar defects. The large lattice mismatch between sapphiresubstrates and GaN layers leads to a high density of defects (dislocations and stacking faults). The dominant defects observed in the GaN epilayers with wurtzite structure are one-dimensional (1D) dislocations and two-dimensional (2D) stacking faults. In particular, the 1D threading dislocations in the c-GaN are generated from the film/substrate interface due to their large lattice and thermal coefficient mismatch. However, because the c-GaN epilayers were grown along the normal direction to the basal slip planes, the generation of basal stacking faults (BSFs) is localized on the c-plane and the generated BSFs did not propagate into the surface during the growth. Thus, the primary defects in the c-GaN epilayers are 1D threading dislocations. Occasionally, the particular planar defects such as prismatic stacking faults (PSFs) and inversion domain boundaries are observed. However, since the basal slip planes in the $\alpha$-GaN are parallel to the growth direction unlike c-GaN, the BSFs with lower formation energy can be easily formed along the growth direction, where the BSFs propagate straightly into the surface. Consequently, the lattice mismatch between film and substrate in $\alpha$-GaN epilayers is mainly relaxed through the formation of BSFs. These 2D planar defects are placed along only one direction in the cross-sectional view. Thus, the nonpolar $\alpha$-GaN films have different atomic arrangements along the two orthogonal directions ($[0001]_{GaN}$ and $[\bar{1}100]_{GaN}$ axes) on the $\alpha$-plane, which are expected to induce anisotropic biaxial strain. In this study, the anisotropic strain relaxation behaviors in the nonpolar $\alpha$-GaN epilayers grown on ($1\bar{1}02$) r-plane sapphire substrates by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVO) were investigated, and the formation mechanism of the abnormal zigzag shape PSFs was discussed using high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM).

  • The wall shear stress in the vicinity of end-to end anastomoses under steady flow conditions was measured using a flush-mounted hot-film anemometer(FMHFA) probe. The experimental measurements were in good agreement with numerical results except in flow with low Reynolds numbers. The wall shear stress increased proximal to the anastomosis in flow from the Penrose tubing (simulating an artery) to the PTFE: graft. In flow from the PTFE graft to the Penrose tubing, low wall shear stress was observed distal to the anastomosis. Abnormal distributions of wall shear stress in the vicinity of the anastomosis, resulting from the compliance mismatch between the graft and the host artery, might be an important factor of ANFH formation and the graft failure. The present study suggests a correlation between regions of the low wall shear stress and the development of anastomotic neointimal fibrous hyperplasia(ANPH) in end-to-end anastomoses. 30523 T00401030523 ^x Air pressure decay(APD) rate and ultrafiltration rate(UFR) tests were performed on new and saline rinsed dialyzers as well as those roused in patients several times. C-DAK 4000 (Cordis Dow) and CF IS-11 (Baxter Travenol) reused dialyzers obtained from the dialysis clinic were used in the present study. The new dialyzers exhibited a relatively flat APD, whereas saline rinsed and reused dialyzers showed considerable amount of decay. C-DAH dialyzers had a larger APD(11.70$\pm$1.32mmHg/min)compared to CF dialyzers(4.32$\pm$0.55mmHg/min)(p<0.05). However, there was no observable difference in the UFR between the two dialyzers. Neither APD nor UFR showed any significant increase with an increasing number of reuses for up to more than 20reuses. A substantial number of failures observed in APD(larger than 20mmHe/min)on the reused dialyzers(2 out of 40 CP and S out 26 C-DAK) were attributed to the Possible damage on the fibers. The purpose of this study is to identify major geometrical differences between Korean femurs 3nd others that we believe belong to Caucasians so that we would be able to get insights into the femoral component design that fits Asians including Koreans. We utilized computerized tomography (CT) images of femurs extracted from cadavers. The CT images were transformed into bitmap data by using a film scanner, and then analyzed by using a commercially available software called Image v.1.0 and a Macintosh IIci computer.The resulting data were compared with already published data. The major results show that the geometry of the Korean femurs is significantly different from that of Caucasians: (1) the anteversion angle and the canal flare index are greater by the amount of approximately 8˚ and 0.5, respectively, (2) the shape of the isthmus cross section is more round, and (3) the distance between the teaser trochanter and the proximal border of the isthmus is shelter by about 15 mm. Then, the bispectra of the signal x (t) at the frequencies (f0, f0) and (f0, 2f0) are calculated to estimate the nonlinear propagation characteristics as their magnitude ratio, w here since bispectrum is free from the gaussian additive noise we can get the value with high S/N. Basic experimental system is constructed by using 3.0 MHz probing ultrasonic waves and the several experiments are carried out for some phantoms. Dependence of Fo on Nk and Bi has been observed by experiment, and the results have been compared with the numerical results obtained by solving a 2-dimensional conduction equation. Optimal stimulus parameters, which can minimize muscle fatigue and can achieve effective muscle contraction were determined in slow and fast muscles in Sprague-Dawley rats. Stimulus patterns of our stimulator were designed to simulate electromyographic activity monitored during locomotion of normal subjects. Muscle types of the lower extremity were classified according to their mechanical property of contraction, which are slow muscle (msoleus m.) and fast muscle (medial gastrocneminus m., rectus femoris m., vastus lateralis m.). Optimal parameters of electrical stimulation for slow muscles were 20 Hz, 0.2 ms square pulse. For fast muscle, 40 Hz, 0.3 ms square pulse was optimal to produce repeated contraction. Higher stimulus intensity was required when synergistic muscles were stimulated simultaneously than when they were stimulated individually. Electrical stimulation for each muscle was designed to generate bipedal locomotion, so that individual muscles alternate contraction and relaxation to simulate stance and swing phases. Portable electrical stimulator with 16 channels built in microprocessor was constructed and applied to paraplegic patients due to lumbar cord injury.
