  • In this study, an optimal design study has been made to determine dimensions of die and multi stress rings for extrusion process. For this purpose, a thermo-rigid-viscoplastic finite element program, CAMPform, was used fur forming analysis of extrusion process and a developed elastic finite element program fur elastic stress analysis of the die set including stress rings. And an optimization program, DOT, was employed for the optimization analysis. From this investigation, it was found out that the amount of shrink fitting incurred by the order of assembly of the die set should be taken into account for optimization when the multi stress rings are used in practice. In addition, it is construed that the proposed design method can be beneficial fur improving the tool life of cold extrusion die set.

  • In this paper, the design optimization of structures with stress constraints is performed using isogeometric shape optimization method. The stress constraints have an important role in design optimization problems since stress concentration could result in structural failure. To represent exact geometry in analysis, the isogeometric analysis method uses the same basis functions as used in the CAD geometry. The geometrically exact model can be used in both stress and design sensitivity analyses so that it can yield more precise optimal design than finite element one. Through numerical examples, the isogeometric approach turns out to be effective in shape optimization problems under stress constraints.

  • A continuum-based design sensitivity analysis (DSA) method fur non-shape problems is developed for geometrically nonlinear elastic structures. The non-shape problem is characterized by the design variables that are not associated with the domain of system like sizing, material property, loading, and so on. Total Lagrangian formulation with the Green-Lagrange strain and the second Piola-Kirchhoff stress is employed to describe the geometrically nonlinear structures. The spatial domain is discretized using the 4-node isoparametric plane stress/strain elements. The resulting nonlinear system is solved using the Newton-Raphson iterative method. To take advantage of the derived analytical sensitivity In topology optimization, a fast and efficient design sensitivity analysis method, adjoint variable method, is employed and the material property of each element is selected as non-shape design variable. Combining the design sensitivity analysis method and a gradient-based design optimization algorithm, an automated design optimization method is developed. The comparison of the analytical sensitivity with the finite difference results shows excellent agreement. Also application to the topology design optimization problem suggests a very good insight for the layout design.

  • The objective of this study is to integrate reliability analysis into shape optimization problem using the evolutionary structural optimization (ESO) in the application example. Reliability-based shape optimization is formulated as volume minimization problem with probabilistic stress constraint under minimization max. von Mises stress and allow stress. Young's modulus, external load and thickness are considered as uncertain variables. In order to compute reliability index, four methods, i.e., reliability index approach (RIA), performance measure approach (PMA), single-loop singlevector (SLSV) and adaptive-loop (ADL), are used. Reliability-based shape optimization design process is conducted to obtain optimal shape satisfying max. von Mises stress and reliability index constraints with the above four methods, and then each result is compared with respect to numerical stability and computing time.

  • The growth-strain method was used for shape optimization, which carries out the optimization by distributing uniformly the distributed parameter such as von Mises stress and shear strain energy density. Shape optimization is carried out by iteration of stress analysis and growth strain analysis. In this study, the effect of growth ratio in the method was investigated and then the range of the adequate value of the growth ratio was determined. Also the growth-strain method was improved by applying the linear PID control theory in order to control volume required by a designer. Finally, an automatic shape optimization system was built up by the improved growth-strain method with a commercial software using finite element method. The effectiveness and practicability of the developed shape optimization system was verified by some examples.

  • In this study, an optimal design technique was investigated for determining appropriate dimensions of components of the die set used in the extrusion process. For this, an axi-symmetric elastic finite element program for the analysis of deformation of the shrink fitted die set was developed with the Lagrange multiplier method to implement the constraint condition of shrink fit of stress ring. By coupling the rigid-viscoplastic analysis of extrusion process by CAMPform and elastic analysis of the die set, the optimization study was made by employing optimization program DOT. Considering the various assembly conditions, optimal design was determined for a single stress ring case. It is construed that the proposed design method can be beneficial for improving the tool life of cold extrusion die set at practice.

  • Multi-disciplinary optimization design concept can provide a solution to many engineering problems. In the field of structural analysis, much development of size or topology optimization has been achieved in the application of research. This paper demonstrates an optimum design of a multi-layer cylindrical tube which behaves thermoelastically. A multi-layer cylindrical tube that has several different material properties at each layer is optimized within allowable stress and temperature range when mechanical and thermal loads are applied simultaneously. When thermal loads are applied to a multi-layer tube, stress phenomena become complicated due to each layer's thermal expansion and the layer thicknesses. Factors like temperature; stress; and material thermal thicknesses of each tube layer are very difficult undertaking. To analyze these problems using an efficient and precise method, the optimization theories are adopted to perform thermoelastic finite element analysis.

  • In this study, a chair with 5 or 6 legs was designed using the commercial program CATIA V5 in order to efficiently design considering the load conditions. In addition, the stress analysis and shape optimization were carried out using ANSYS Workbench for the chair consisting of stainless steel, aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys and structural steel. As a result, a chair with five legs showed the maximum equivalent stress at the end of the edge of the wheel parts and on the other hand, a chair with six legs showed the maximum equivalent stress at the corner of the connecting parts of the pillar and leg. In addition, the material and the weight was reduced by shape optimization for the chair model with 5 legs and maximum equivalent stress for stainless steel was found that greatly relaxed, compared with that of before shape optimization model.

  • The safety block which prevents drop of laborers at high altitude was analyzed by finite element method. Elastic analysis was done by Ansys ver. 11.0. and tetrahedral meshing was used. As load applied more vertically at the fixed face of saw tooth, the stress concentration became smaller and the load distributed broader. When load worked at saw tooth and the shape was more straight to the direction of load, most stresses except principal stress became smaller. When the area of the load increased, principal stress and equivalent stress could be decreased simultaneously. A principal stress and other various stresses occurred in 3D shape, therefore revised model which has smaller equivalent stress than other models shows excellence on the stability and the credibility.

  • In this paper, the Colliding Bodies Optimization (CBO), Enhanced Colliding Bodies Optimization (ECBO) and Vibrating Particles System (VPS) algorithms and the force method are used for the simultaneous analysis and design of truss structures. The presented technique is applied to the design and analysis of some planer and spatial trusses. An efficient method is introduced using the CBO, ECBO and VPS to design trusses having members of prescribed stress ratios. Finally, the minimum weight design of truss structures is formulated using the CBO, ECBO and VPS algorithms and applied to some benchmark problems from literature. These problems have been designed by using displacement method as analyzer, and here these are solved for the first time using the force method. The accuracy and efficiency of the presented method is examined by comparing the resulting design parameters and structural weight with those of other existing methods.
