  • PURPOSES : Hot-mix asphalt(HMA) concretes show a trend of strength increase at low temperature due to binder stiffness increase, but strength decrease below a ceratin low temperature. This is due to the differential thermal contraction(DTC) which is induced by a significant difference in coefficients of thermal contraction between aggregate and asphalt which is coated around the aggregate. This DTC damage is well known to occur in HMA concrete, but is not yet investigated in warm-mix asphalt(WMA) concretes. METHODS : To evaluate DTC damage on WMA in this study, the flexural strength($S_f$) of WMA concretes, which were produced at $30{\sim}40^{\circ}C$ lower temperature, was evaluated in comparison with that of HMA at -5, -15 and $-25^{\circ}C$. RESULTS : Most of WMA and HMA mixtures showed flexural strength increase down to $-15^{\circ}C$ and decrease below $-15^{\circ}C$. this type of strength reduction below $-15^{\circ}C$ can e explained as the effect of differential thermal contraction that is a consequence of the large difference in coefficients of thermal contraction between aggregate and asphalt. the property reduction of WMA is similar the result of previous works dealt with HMA mixtures. CONCLUSIONS : Even though there is some differences by materials used, the WMA concretes showed a significantly lower DTC damage than HMA concrete at low temperature at ${\alpha}$=0.05 level.

  • Railroad, the structure maintenance and restoration project was increased and widely performed in concrete pavement road and airport, building at downtown area, bridge abutment, and other concrete structures. Especially, the ground reinforcement technique by quick-reaction expansible resins is the most effective countermeasures against differential settlement and undesired deformation of structure. In this paper, the unconfined compressive strength and some environmental related tests were conducted to evaluate compressive strength and environmental effect of quick-reaction expansive resins and soil mixtures. Also, three case histories of concrete structure and railroad restoration project are presented. Based on the laboratory test, the quick-reaction expansible resins and soil mixture represent the sufficient compressive strength and the leachate material is satisfied the environmental regulation limits. As a result of this study, the structure restoration technology using quick-reaction expansible resins is very effective for restoration of differential settlement and deformation, and it is environmentally sustainable technology.

  • The first specimens were sampled across the depth of roll products processed by rapid heating and cooling of the roll, namely, differential heat treatment. The second samples were taken from the non-heat treated roll at different depths. The samples were heat treated following the same temperature history as that at each corresponding location in the roll where the samples were taken. Consequently, both specimens showed the similar microstructure and mechanical properties (tensile, impact and fatigue strength etc.)

  • In this study the magneto hydrodynamic (MHD) micro polar fluid flow of a viscous incompressible fluid past a porous medium in the presence of chemical reaction is considered. This work is devoted to investigate the Soret effect and Electromagnetic radiation effect and analyze analytically. In the energy equation the applied magnetic field strength and in the concentration equation the Soret effect are incorporated. The basic PDE (partial differential equations) are reduced to ODE (ordinary differential equations) using non dimensional variables. Then the analytical solution of the dimensionless equations are found using perturbation technique. The features of the fluid flow parameters are analyzed, discussed and explained graphically. The graphical solutions are found using MATLAB R2019b. Skin friction coefficient at the wall, Couple stress coefficient at the plate and the local surface heat flux are also thoroughly examined. Overall, this study sheds light on the complex interplay between physical parameters in the behavior of MHD micro-polar fluid past a porous medium in the presence of chemical reaction.

  • With increased height of structure, the effect of column shortening need special consideration in the design and construction of high-rise buildings. The shortening of each column affects nonstructural members such as partitions, cladding, and M/E systems, which are not designed to carry gravity forces. The slabs and beams will tilt due to the cumulative differential shortening of adeacent vertical members. The main purpose of estimating the total shortening of vertical structural member is to compensate the differential shortening between adeacent members. This paper presents effect of parameters for phenomenon of column shortening in vertical members. The paper presents effect of parameters for phenomenon of column shortening in vertical members. The conclusions obtained from this study are follow as ; Strength of concrete and steel ratio effected on column shortening caused by elastic and inelastic shortening. Also, it is known that Ultimate-shrinkage-Value, Specific-Creep-Value, and volume to surface ratio effected on inelastic shortening only. Particularly, Ultimate-Shrinkage-Value and Specific-Creep-Value effected considerable on the amount of total column shortening.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of visual feedback bicycle training on running performance, maximal oxygen uptake and quadriceps muscle strength. Design: A randomized controlled trial. Methods: Fifteen healthy adult men with no musculoskeletal or nervous system disease and capable of bicycle training were included. After the pretest, subjects were randomly assigned to visual feedback bicycle training group and general fixed bicycle training group. Both groups were trained two times a week for three weeks, each week for a fixed time and number of repetitions, followed by a six week washout period and then crossing the training method. visual feedback bicycle training provides visual feedback of heart rate in real time using a monitor and a heart rate meter during bicycle training, and general fixed bicycle training performed general bicycle training without visual feedback. After training, each item was measured using a wearable technology, gas analyzer, isokinetic equipment. Results: The results of this study was significant differences in running performance, maximal oxygen uptake and quadriceps muscle strength in visual feedback bicycle training group (p<0.05). The differential effect was found between visual feedback bicycle training group and general fixed bicycle training group in running performance, maximal oxygen uptake, and quadriceps muscle strength (p<0.05). Conclusions: This study suggested that that visual feedback bicycle training can be applied as a useful training method to improve running performance, maximal oxygen uptake and quadriceps muscle strength.

  • In this paper, a computational method of an action potential including the effect of extremely low frequency and mobile phone (external) electromagnetic fields is Proposed. The method is based on the Hodgkin and Huxley model, applies the effect of the electromagnetic fields on the action Potential in terms of a binding factor into the injection current of the model, and calculates the Strength-Duration curve from numerical experiments for a frequency range of electromagnetic fields. In the numerical experiments, the coupled ordinary differential equations of the action potential and the state variables are solved solf-consistently by using Runge-Kutta Fehlberg method. The range of the frequency considered is from 1Hz through 100Hz and of 900MHz, which is specific for a mobile Phone. The Strength-Duration curves resulted showed good agreements with the equation suggested by Hodgkin and Huxley.

  • Many temperature-related problems are created in asphalt pavement due to the low temperature. In particular, loss of tensile strength due to low temperature is known to be responsible for thermal failure of pavements in cold regions under $-20^{\circ}C$. The objective of this study is to evaluate characteristics of resistance against low-temperature cracking of polymer asphalt concrete mixtures modified with LDPE and SBS. The test results showed that the mixtures had the maximum indirect tensile strength(ITS) at low temperature ranging from $-10^{\circ}C. It was proved through ITS test that the stress due to differential thermal contraction over the tensile strength did generate internal damage at the temperature below $-20^{\circ}C$. It was shown that the asphalt mixtures modified with polymer had better ITS than the normal asphalt mixture at the temperature below $-20^{\circ}C$. Thus the effect of modification was revealed as tensile strength improvement. From the results of this study, it was recommended that polymer-modified asphalt should be used in order to prevent low-temperature cracking in cold region.

  • In this work, the effect of catalysts on the mechanical properties of carbon fibers-reinforced epoxy matrix composites cured by cationic latent thermal catalysts, i.e., N-benzylpyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate (BPH) was studied. Differential scanning calorimetry was executed for thermal characterization of the epoxy matrix system. Mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were studied by interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$), and specific fracture energy ($G_{IC}$). As a result, the conversion of neat epoxy matrix cured by BPH was higher than that of one cured by diaminodiphenyl methane (DDM). The ILSS, $K_{IC}$, $G_{IC}$, and impact strength of the composites cured by BPH were also superior to those of the composites cured by DDM. This was probably the consequence of the effect of the substituted benzene group of BPH catalyst, resulting in an increase in the cross-link density and structural stability of the composites studied.

  • This study focused on the effect of autonomic microcapsules on the mechanical properties of structural material. Several types of microcapsules with healing agents were manufactured by varying agitation speed of high speed stirrer. The size distribution of microcapsules was measured by a particle size analzer. The epoxy specimens embedded with microcapsules were manufactured and the degree of cure of such epoxy specimen was measured by a differential scanning calorimetry. The tensile modulus and tensile strength in epoxy specimens embedded with microcapsules were evaluated in order to investigate the effects of microcapsules on mechanical properties of structural materials. The configuration of microcapsules and morphology of fracture surfaces for the epoxy specimen were examined by an optical microcope and a scanning electron microscope. According to the results, tensile strength of the epoxy specimen embedded with microcapsules was indicated a little reduction, but tensile modulus was not much affected on microcapsules.
