  • Since at least three-quarters of the volume of concrete is occupied by aggregate, it is not surprising that its quality is considerable importance. Not only may the aggregate limit the strength of concrete, as weak aggregate cannot porduce strong concrete, but the properties of aggregate greatly affect the durability and sructural performance of concrete. But, it is ture that aggregate strength is usually not a factor in normal concrete strength because the aggregate particle is several times stronger than the matrix and the transition zone in concrete. This study is to consider the influence the strength of concrete according to the kinds of aggregate, such as crushed river rocks, curshed rocks, high strength recycled aggregate, low strength recycled aggregate at water cement ratio 0.25. It is possible to concern the important of the mechanical role of aggegate for the high strength concrete.

  • Conventional methods of reinforced slope analysis based on the concept of limit equilibrium have been widely adopted mainly due to their simplicity and short computation time. But depending upon the assumptions on the inter-slice forces, the factor of safety resulting from the limit equilibrium method is not uniquely determined. This paper describes a method to calculate the factor of safely of a slope using a numerical analysis. Recently some useful analysis techniques (Strength reduction method and the stability method using stress fields) by numerical analysis are proposed and their theory and characteristics applications are studied and investigated with simple examples in this paper.

  • Non-heat treated steels are attractive in the steel-wire industry since the spheroidization and quenching-tempering treatment are not involved during the processing. However, non-heat treated steels should satisfy high strength and good formability without performing heat treatment. Therefore, it is important to investigate optimum materials showing a good combination of strength and formability after the drawing process. In this study, three different steels such as dual phase steel, low-Si steel, and ultra low carbon bainitic steel were used to study their mechanical properties and the cold formability. The cold formability of three steels was investigated by estimating the deformation resistance and the forming limit. The deformation resistance was estimated by calculating the deformation energy, and the forming limit was evaluated by measuring the critical strain revealing crack initiation at the notch tip of the specimens. The results showed that deformation resistance was the lowest in the low-Si steel, and the forming limit strains of ultra low carbon bainitic steel and low-Si steel were higher than that of commercial SWRCH45F steel.

  • Probability-based design codes have been developed to sufficiently confirm the safety level of structures. One of the most acceptable probability-based approaches is Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD), which measures the safety level of the structures in terms of the reliability index. The main contribution of this paper is to calibrate the load and resistance factors of the design code for tunnels. The load and resistance factors are calculated using the available statistical models and probability-based procedures. The major steps include selection of representative structures, consideration of the limit state functions, calculation of reliability for the selected structures, selection of the target reliability index and calculation of load factors and resistance factors. The load and resistance models are reviewed. Statistical models of resistance (load carrying capacity) are summarized for strength limit state in bending, shear and compression. The reliability indices are calculated for several segments of a selected circular tunnel designed according to the tunnel manual report (Tunnel Manual). The novelty of this paper is the selection of the target reliability. In doing so, the uniform spectrum of reliability indices is proposed based on the probability paper. The final recommendation is proposed based on the closeness to the target reliability index.

Effects of the Gap and the Speed on the Lap-Joint $CO_2$ Laser Welding of Automotive Steel Sheets (자동차용 강판의 겹치기 $CO_2$ 레이저 용접에서 용접속도와 판재간격에 따른 용접특성 연구)

  • Recently the laser welding technology has been applied increasingly for the automotive bodies. But the lap joint laser welding for 3 dimensional automotive body is new while the butt joint laser welding is well known as the tailored blank technology. In this study, the process window was found for the full penetration welding of the lap joint of the 1mm-thick high strength steel sheets. The limit curves and characteristic curves were suggested to define the boundaries and the contour lines in a space of the welding speed and the gap size. The characteristics of the weld sectional geometry were used to determine the limit curves. They are bead width, penetration depth and sectional area. After the observed data was analysed carefully, it was noticed that there was a transition point at which the sectional shape was changed and the bead area jumped as the welding speed was increased. Also a new concept of 'input energy Per volume' was suggested to distinguish the difference at the transition Point. The difference of sectional areas at the transition point can be related to the dynamic keyhole phenomena.

The Effects of Microstrucutral Parameters on Bending Fatigue Properties of Heavily Drawn Pearlitic Steel Filaments used for Automotive Tires (타이어 보강용 고 탄소강 미세 강선의 굽힘 피로 성질에 미치는 미세 조직의 영향)

  • Influences of microstructure on high-cycle fatigue (HCF) limit of high carbon $(>0.7wt.\;\%)$ steel filaments used for tires have been investigated. A series of the fatigue tests was carried out depending on carbon content by using Hunter-type tester at a frequency of 60 Hz at a tension/compression stress of 900 to 1500 MPa. Microstructural changes of the filaments were identified in the lateral direction by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that the mechanical properties, such as fatigue limit and tensile strength, were improved with increasing carbon content, which was mainly attributed to decreased lamellar spacing and cementite thickness. However, the fatigue ratio, which is defined as the ratio of the fatigue limit to the tensile strength, was reduced in a higher carbon range of 0.8 to $0.9\;wt.\%$, while the fatigue ratio was nearly constant in a lower carbon range of 0.7 to $0.8\;wt.\%$. Overall mechanical properties of the filaments, depending on carbon content, have been discussed in terms of the microstructural parameter change of lamellar spacing and cementite thickness. In addition, the variation of cementite morphology on the fatigue crack propagation of high carbon $(0.9wt.\;\%)$ filaments will be discussed.

  • In a strengthened bridge deck which received increased service loads, failure patterns of bridge deck vary depending on deck thickness, compressive strength of concrete, yielding strength of reinforcement, reinforcement ratio and additional strengthening ratio. General failure pattern that is most commonly reported as punching shear failure after the main rebar yields, followed by yielding of distributing rebar. In this paper, by Proposing a limit to the amount of strengthening material, a brittle failure can be prevented and a ductile failure mode similar to that developed in unstrengthened deck is derived.   • The Advanced Power Reactor 1400 (APR1400) Steam Generator (SG) uses alloy 690 as a tube material and SA-508 Grade 3 Class 1 as a tubesheet material to form tube-to-tubesheet joint through hydraulic expansion process. In this paper, the residual stresses in the SG tube-to-tubesheet contact area was investigated by applying Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) methodology and the V-model. The use of MBSE transform system description into diagrams which clearly describe the logical interaction between functions hence minimizes the risk of ambiguity. A theoretical and Finite Element Methodology (FEM) was used to assess and compare the residual stresses in the tube-to-tubesheet contact area. Additionally, the axial strength of the tube to tubesheet joint based on the pull-out force against the contact joint force was evaluated and recommended optimum autofrettage pressure to minimize residual stresses in the transition zone given. A single U-tube hole and tubesheet with ligament thickness was taken as a single cylinder and plane strain condition was assumed. An iterative method was used in FEM simulation to find the limit autofrettage pressure at which pull-out force and contact force are of the same magnitude. The joint contact force was estimated to be 20 times more than the pull-out force and the limit autofrettage pressure was estimated to be 141.85MPa.

Study on engineering properties of xanthan gum reinforced kaolinite

  • The strengthening efficiency of biopolymer treated soil depends on biopolymer type, concentration ratio, soil type, initial water content, curing time and mixing method. In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of xanthan gum (XG) treated kaolinite were investigated through compaction test, Atterberg limit test, triaxial test and unconfined compression test. The results indicated that the optimum water content (OWC) increased from 30.3% of untreated clay to 33.5% of 5% XG treated clay, while the maximum dry density has a slight increase from 13.96 kg/m3 to 14 kg/m3 of 0.2% XG treated clay and decrease to 2.7 kg/m3 of 5% XG treated clay. Meanwhile, the plastic limit of XG treated clay increased with the increase of XG concentration, while 0.5% XG treated clay can be observed the maximum liquid limit with 79.5%. Moreover, there are the ideal water content about 1.3-1.5 times of the optimum water content achieving the maximum dry density and curing time to obtain the maximum compressive strength for different XG contents, which the UCS is 1.52 and 2.07 times of the maximum UCS of untreated soil for 0.5% and 1% XG treated clay, respectively. In addition, hot-dry mixing can achieve highest UCS than other mixing methods (e.g., dry mixing, wet mixing and hot-wet mixing).

  • In this study, it was investigated about endurance limit and fatigue behavior of load carrying fillet welded cruciform joints according to welding methods of SMAW, SAW, MIG and FCAW commonly using for welding structures in present. Endurance limit carried omit highly in the order of SMAW, MIG, SAW, FCAW and fatigue crack propagation ratio carried out lowly in the order of SMAW, MIG, FCAW, SAW. By these results, it is needed to use SMAW or MIG welding methods for welding structures with small welding capacity and SAW or FCAW methods for large welding structures after due consideration about economic gains and operation efficiency of welding. Fatigue crack propagation ratio is more effected by strength of welding materials than endurance limit of welding materials according to welding methods.
