Infiltration of rainfall causes railway embankment to be unstable and may result in failure. Basic relationship between the stability of railway embankment and rainfall introducing the partial saturation concept of ground are defined to analyze the stability of embankment by rainfall. A pressure plate test is also peformed to obtain soil-water characteristic curve of unsaturated soils. Based on this curve, the variables in the shear strength function and permeability function are also defined. These functions are used fur the numerical model for evaluation of railway embankments under rainfall. As comparing the model and case studies, the variation of shear strength, the degree of saturation and pore-water pressure for railway embankment during rainfall can be predicted and the safety factor of railway embankment can be expressed as the function of rainfall amount namely rainfall index. Therefore, the research on safety factor on railway embankment considering train speed and rainfall infiltration with the variation of rainfall intensity and rainfall duration was carried out in this paper.

Cryogenic characteristics of austenitic stainless steel based on 304 steel with nickel and nitrogen were investigated at room temperature and $-196^{\circ}C$. The alloys were fabricated by vacuum arc furnace and cold working after homogenization treatment. The addition of nickel and nitrogen decreased the stability of $\delta$-ferrite and induced the stability against the formation of martensite to result significantly in enhancing ductility at $-196^{\circ}C$. Nitrogen reduced Md temperature, which was beneficial to the tensile strength and elongation at $25^{\circ}C$ and -196$^{\circ}C$.
Rock disturbance caused by blasting and stress relaxation is commonly observed during excavation. As the distance from the source of disturbance increases, the degree of disturbance decreases, and rock at a large depth does not experience disturbance. However, in stability analyses, a single value of disturbance is often applied to the entire rock mass, which leads to underestimated results. In this study, this modeling mistake is addressed by considering realistically varying rock disturbance. The safety of infinite slopes in a disturbed rock mass with a strength governed by the Hoek-Brown failure criterion is investigated based on the kinematic approach of limit analysis. The maximum disturbance is assigned to the outermost slope face because it is directly exposed to blasting damage and dilation, and the disturbance progressively decays with distance in the rock mass. The safety analysis results indicate that the assumption of uniform disturbance in the entire rock mass leads to underestimation of the rock strength and safety on infinite rock slopes. A critical slip surface appears to be within the disturbed rock layer as well as the interface between the disturbed upper rock and undisturbed lower rock.

PURPOSES : In this study, various laboratory tests were performed to investigate basic physical properties of the asphalt concrete which uses wasted vinyl aggregates. METHODS : The thermal conductivity, ultrasonic velocity, Marshall stability, flow, indirect tensile strength were measured according to binder content and wasted vinyl aggregate content. An experimental construction was performed to verify construct ability of the asphalt pavement using the wasted vinyl aggregates. RESULTS : The thermal conductivity and ultrasonic velocity decreased showing insulation effect by mixing more wasted vinyl aggregate, whereas stability and flow increased. The void ratio shows similar value regardless of the mixing ratio. The highest indirect tensile strength was measured at 2.5% of wasted vinyl aggregate content. The construct ability was verified by observing the process of mixing, placing, and compaction and the state of the pavement surface. CONCLUSIONS : The basic properties and construct ability of the asphalt concrete using the wasted vinyl aggregates were verified. The temperature according to pavement depth will be measured to verify the insulation effect of the wasted vinyl aggregates. In addition, amount of snowfall, snowmelt area, and ice adhesion strength will be analyzed quantitively.
Objectives: This study investigated the microhardness, flexural strength, and color stability of bleach-shade resin composites cured with 3 different light-curing units. Materials and Methods: In this in vitro experimental study, 270 samples were fabricated of bleach and A2 shades of 3 commercial resin composites (Point 4, G-aenial Anterior, and Estelite Sigma Quick). Samples (n = 5 for each trial) were cured with Bluephase N, Woodpecker LED.D, and Optilux 501 units and underwent Vickers microhardness and flexural strength tests. The samples were tested after 24 hours of storage in distilled water. Color was assessed using a spectrophotometer immediately after preparation and 24 hours after curing. Data were analyzed using 3-way analysis of variance and the Tukey test (p ≤ 0.001). Results: Samples cured with Optilux exhibited the highest and those cured with LED.D exhibited the lowest microhardness (p = 0.023). The bleach shade of Point 4 composite cured with Optilux displayed the highest flexural strength, while the same composite and shade cured with Sigma Quick exhibited the lowest (p ≤ 0.001). The color change after 24 hours was greatest for the bleach shade of G-aenial cured with Bluephase N and least for the A2 shade of Sigma Quick cured with Optilux (p ≤ 0.001). Conclusions: Light curing with polywave light-emitting diode (LED) yielded results between or statistically similar to those of quartz-tungsten-halogen and monowave LED in the microhardness and flexural strength of both A2 and bleach shades of resin composites. However, the brands of light-curing devices showed significant differences in color stability.
The design of truss type sign support structures is based on the guidelines provided by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Standard Specifications for Highway Signs, Luminaries and Traffic Signals and the American Institute of Steel Construction Design Specifications. Using these specifications, the column design strength is normally determined using the effective length approach. This approach does not always accurately address all issues associated with frame stability, including the actual end conditions of the individual members, variations of the loads in the members, and the resulting sidesway buckling for truss type sign support structures. This paper provides insight into the problems with the simplified design approach for determining the effective lengths and discusses different approaches for overcoming these simplifications. A system buckling approach, also known as a rational buckling analysis, is used in this study to determine improved predictions for design strength of truss type sign support structures.
Dimensional stability of LCD polarization film consisted of triacetyl cellulose (TAC) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) film has been studied and especially, the effect of PVA adhesive on the dimensional stability has been considered as function of deacetylation and molecular weight of PVA adhesive. The maximum adhesion strength between TAC and PVA film was obtained in the laminate using PVA adhesive with 70% of OH content and the effect of molecular weight on the adhesion strength was only pronounced in the laminate using PVA adhesive with OH content above 70%. It was found that the optimum dimensional stability of TAC/PVA/TAC laminate (polarizing film) was obtained when applied PVA adhesive has low molecular weight and it was more dependent upon the OH content than the adhesion strength between TAC and PVA films.

This study investigated fundamental properties of lightweight foamed concrete using cement kiln dust (CKD) and both fly ash(FA) and stability agent. Test results showed that concrete incorporating more amounts of admixture decreased slump flow and it caused increase of superplasiticizer in order to secure the fluidity performance. In addition concrete adding stability agent showed stable flow state, resisting segregation of materials and decreasing bleeding capacity. Sinking depth of concrete incorporating 20% of CKD and adding 0.002% of stability agent was indicated at 0mm. For the properties of hardened concrete. compressive strength of concrete incorporating CKD declined due to a lower appearance density, compared with other specimens. The difference of that was not very significant and the value of ail specimen was higher than KS range. Moreover strength of concrete incorporating CKD was even higher at curing temperature $5^{\circ}C$. Tensile strength ratio of concrete incorporating CKD was indicated between 0.50 to 0.59, which is higher value than control concrete. Heat conductivity of concrete incorporating FA was under the KS range while concrete incorporating 20% of CKD was satisfied in KS. Concrete adding stability agent improved insulation performance due to the lower heat conductivity. In conclusion, it is possible that concrete incorporating 20% of CKD and adding 0.002% of stability agent can secure high quality of lightweight foamed concrete.

Spacer is a construction material for maintaining cover depth and steel installation, however several problems like staining, leakage, and cracking are currently issued due to performance degradation and unsatisfactory dimensional stability of spacer. Plastic composite is widely used for prevention of brittle failure in cement based material, which yields improvement of crack resistance and ductile failure. This study is for development and applicability evaluation of high strength spacer with slag cement for environmental load reduction and plastic composite like polypropylene fiber, nylon fiber, and glass fiber. For this work, unit weight of 4 different plastic fibers are evaluated through preliminary tests. Physical tests including compressive, flexural, and tensile strength and durability tests including absorption, permeability, length change, crack resistance, carbonation, and freezing and thawing are performed. Through various tests, optimum plastic fiber is selected and manufacturing system for high strength spacer with the selected fiber is developed. Dimensional stability of the developed spacer is evaluated through field applicability evaluation.

This study is interested in identifying the effectiveness of alkali-activated fire protection material compounds including the alkali-activator such as potassium hydroxide, sodium silicate and fly ash as the fire resistant finishing materials. Also, this paper is concerned with change in compressive strength and pore structure of the alkali-activated fire protection material at high temperatures. The testing methods of fire protection materials in high temperature properties are make use of TG-DSC and mercury intrusion porosimetry measurements. This study results show that compressive strength is rapidly degraded depending on a rise of heating temperature. Porosity showed a tendency to increase irrespective of specimen types. This is due to both the outbreak of collapse of gel comprising the cement and a micro crack by heating. However, alkali-activated fire protection material composed of potassium hydroxide, sodium silicate and fly ash has the thermal stability of the slight decrease of compressive strength and porosity at high temperature. These thermal stability is caused by the ceramic binding capacity induced by alkali activation reaction by the reason of the thermal analysis result not showing the decomposition of calcium hydrate.
