  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of 'strata-fossils' STEAM program with questions on the academic achievement, creative problem-solving ability and scientific interests of elementary students. For this purpose, the STEAM program with questions was developed and applied to the third and fourth graders in elementary school. As a result, the academic achievement, creative problem-solving ability and scientific interests of the group applying the program showed a significant improvement in the post-test than the pre-test. The result of learner satisfaction survey of the STEAM program was also high. This means that the STEAM program class with questions for 'strata-fossils' could be meaningful works to encourage students' academic achievement as well as their creative problem-solving ability and scientific interests. Therefore, it seems necessary to apply for other themes in elementary science continuously.

  • Fossil legumes of Albizia miokalkora Hu et Chaney (Mimosoideae) were found in the Miocene Duho Formation of the Yeonil Group distributed along the coast of Yeonil Bay in the Pohang area. The legume is flat and long and has 5-7 rounded seeds. The legumes of Albizia miokalkora are rare in the Cenozoic floras of the world and only known to Middle Miocene of East Asia. The fossil Albizia may use one of the important taxa to construct the biogeographic history of East Asia. This discovery is the first record of Albizia from the Neogene strata of Korea.

  • A total of 111 independently oriented core samples were drilled at 12 sites in fue Kimpo area ($37.70^{\circ}N$, $126.55^{\circ}E$) of the Taedong Supergroup. The Taedong strata are composed of sandstone, conglomeratic sandstone, shale and thin coal seams. The age of the strata is known to be Late Triassic-Early Jurassic according to freshwater Esfuerites and plant fossil (Dictyophyllum-Clathropteris flora) contents. Through AF and thermal demagnetization, an area-mean ChRM direction of $D=48.3^{\circ}\;I=40.3^{\circ}\;{\alpha}_{95}=7.9^{\circ}\;k=59.5$, n=7 was obtained. It passed fold and reversal test in the formation-mean level. Fold test was not significant in the area-mean level. The palaeomagnetic north pole calculated from the area-mean lies at $46.3^{\circ}N$, $222.0^{\circ}E$ with dp=5.7, $dm=9.5^{\circ}$. This pole position is very similar to those of the South China Block (SCB) in Triassic times. Palaeolatitude of the Kimpo area in the Taedong times was $23.0^{\circ}N$, again very similar to the palaeolatitude of the South China Block in the Late Triassic. This low latitude of the study area at the time of deposition explains the tropical-subtropical nature of fossil contents of the Taedong Supergroup.

  • The Cretaceous fossil sites of Seoyuri in Hwasun was designated as the Korean Natural Monument No. 487 in November 2007. It provides important resources for paleoenvironmental studies, including theropod trackways, plant fossils, mudcracks, ripple marks, and horizontal bedding. The Cretaceous sedimentary strata contain a wide variety of volcanic pebbles, 5-40 cm in diameter in the lower portion and are overlain by the Late Cretaceous Hwasun andesite. Whole rock absolute K-Ar age determinations were performed on six volcanic pebbles from the Cretaceous sedimentary strata and on two samples from the overlaying Hwasun andesite. These ages indicate that the rocks belong to the period between the Turonian of the late Cretaceous (91-70 Ma) and the Pliocene age of the early Cenozoic ($63.4{\pm}1.2$ and $62.1{\pm}1.2$ Ma). Thus, the K-Ar ages indicate that the maximum geological age of the dinosaur track-bearing sedimentary deposits is about ca. 70 Ma. Therefore, it suggests that the age is comparable to the formation ages of the dinosaur footprints-bearing deposits in Sado area of Yeosu (71-66Ma).

  • Modern society is rapidly changing in the fields of science and technology, with new information and knowledge constantly being discovered. So enhancing the creativity and positive attitude of students is important. STEAM education enables students to develop their creativity, personality, intelligence and sensitivity with a well-balanced curriculum. In this study, considering the student's interest, a theme-centered STEAM program was developed in the 'Strata and Fossils' unit of elementary 4th grade science. The purposes were to find the impact on the academic achievement, creative problem solving abilities, and scientific attitude of elementary school students. The STEAM program are composed of contents which can be applied effectively indoors. As application results for STEAM program to J elementary school's students in J province, the experimental group increased significantly in the academic achievement, creative problem solving abilities and scientific attitude compared to the control group. Therefore, it is necessary to be developed continuous and systematic STEAM programs in units of various subjects to improve the students' academic achievement, creative problem solving abilities and scientific attitude.

  • The goal of this study is to elucidate the fusulinid biostratigraphy of the Carboniferous limestones distributed in the Gangdong area of Samcheok coalfield, Korea. The Carboniferous strata of the study area mainly comprise alternaton of dark gray shale, dark gray and reddish sandstone, and gray limestone. The limestones consist mainly of wackestonepackstone containing various fossil fragments such as crinoid, coral, brachiopod, foraminifera, fusulinid, and bryozoa; this observation thus suggests that the study site was the shallow marine environments. A tital of 12 species belonging to 5 genera of fusulinids are identified from the limestones of the Gangdong geologic section: Ozawainella turgida Sheng, Ozawainella sp. A, Ozawainella magna Sheng, Pseudostaffella antiqua (Dutkevich), Pseudostaffella paracompressa Safonova, Pseudostaffella kimi Cheong, Pseudostaffella sp., Beedeina lanceolata (Lee and Chen), Beedeina samarica (Rauser-Chernoussova), Beedeina sp. A, Neostaffella sphaeroidea cuboides Rauser-Chernoussova, and Hanostaffella hanensis Cheong. Such fusulinids species were reported from the lower part of the Geumcheon Formation in Samcheok coalfield and the middle Moscovian stage in Eurasia. On the basis of the fusulinid biostratigraphic correlation of the Gangdong geologic sections (A) to (C), the limestone should be overlapped by faults and folds. Moreover the stratigraphic thickness of the limestone is thinner than the thickness of the limestone outcrop of the Gangdong geologic section. Therefore, the stratigraphic sequence of the Gangdong geologic section is represented as the Gangdong geologic section (A).

  • In order to understand the broad outline and palaeobotanical significances, the fossil woods from the Korean Peninsula were integrated through the literature surveys. Types and diversity of them are gradually increasing from Mesozoic to Cenozoic, especially increased sharply in Cenozoic. During the Early Mesozoic, six conifer taxa belonging to four genera were described, which corresponds to about 6% of the Daedong flora. Those of the Late Mesozoic are all conifers, consisting of fifteen taxa belonging to seven genera, which corresponds to about 29% of the Nakdong flora. During the Neogene, thirty four taxa belong to sixteen families were described. Those woods mostly consist of dicotyledon and have the greatest diversity compared to other geologic eras, which corresponds to about 83% of the Janggi flora. It is inferred that such a rapid increase of the silicified wood fossils in Neogene are due to the abundant presence of dicotyledon in floral composition and of pyroclastic rocks in strata, which are appropriate for preserving wood as fossils.

  • The early Ordovician graptolites from the upper part (Tumok Member) of the Mungok Formation of the Namaeri and Baeiljae sections at Yeongwol consist of five species belonging to five genera. They are Adelograptus cf. tenellus, Callograptus sp., Dendrograptus suni, Dictyonema sp., and Psigraptus jacksoni. Of these 5 species, Psigraptus is the most excellent index fossil for international correlation with the early Ordovician strata. Adelograptus cf. tenellus from the Mungok Formation of the Namaeri and Baeiljae sections is also recognized with especially short stipe relative to Adelograptus tenellus. Three graptolite zones (such as Adelograptus, Psigraptus, and Dendroid type zones) are correlated with those of Canada, Australia, and China, respectively. The upper part of the Mungok Formation is assigned to the late Tremadocian.
