  • The dynamic material property of Mn-B ally high-strength steel is investigated through the rod impact test which is one of simple test methods for the analysis of the material behavior under high-strain-rate. Rod impact test is performed to produce the deformed shape of rod and analyzed by the one-dimensional theory based on conservation law and the two-dimensional hydrocode AUTODYN-2D. The dynamic yield stress is determined and compared with the static yield stress to investigate the strain-rate sensitivity of Mn-B alloy high-strength steel.

  • In this paper, a sensitivity of the fiber optic pressure sensor in water is demonstrated. A single mode optical fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer used to detect the change in optical path length produced by the change of fiber optic strain in water. The sensitivity with this system measured 100.mu.psia through an experiment in the static response.

  • Two types of fiber-optic sensors, EFPI(extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer) and FBG(fiber Bragg grating), have been investigated for measurement of thermal strain and temperature. The EFPI sensor is only for measurement of thermal strain and the FBG sensor is for simultaneous measurement of thermal strain and temperature. FBG temperature sensor was developed to measure strain-independent temperature. This sensor configuration consists of a single-fiber Bragg grating and capillary tube which makes it isolated from external strain. This sensor can then be used to compensate for the temperature cross sensitivity of a FBG strain sensor. These sensors are demonstrated by embedding them into a graphite/epoxy composite plate and by attaching them on aluminum rod and unsymmetric graphitelepoxy composite plate. All the tests were conducted in a thermal chamber with the temperature range $20-100^{\circ}C$. Results of strain measurements by fiber-optic sensors are compared with that from conventional resistive foil gauge attached on the surface.

  • We demonstrated the viability of fully microfabricating SWCNT(single-wall carbon nanotube) film strain sensors for force and weight sensing. Our spray-deposited SWCNT film strain sensors showed good linearity over a range from 0 to 400 microstrain, and much higher sensitivity compared to commercial metal foil-type gauges. The number of grids and the thickness of the SWCNT film were found to have a significant effect on the strain sensing properties of the SWCNT film gauges. A strain sensing methode for the CNT-based strain gauges was also investigated using a binocular type beam load cells. Preliminary results indicate that the microfabrication method shown here is promising for developing a commercial strain gauge using a spray-coated SWCNT thin film. In the near future, various studies will be performed to further enhance the properties of the spray-coated SWCNT film strain sensors.

  • This paper deals with dynamic tensile characteristics for the polypropylene used in an IP(Instrument Panel). The polypropylene is adopted in the dash board of a car, especially PAB(Passenger Air Bag) module. Its dynamic tensile characteristics are important because the PAB module undergoes high speed deformation during the airbag expansion. Since the operating temperature of a car varies from $-40^{\circ}C$ to $90^{\circ}C$ according to the specification, the dynamic tensile tests are performed at a low temperature($-30^{\circ}C$), the room temperature($21^{\circ}C$) and a high temperature($85^{\circ}C$). The tensile tests are carried out at strain rates of six intervals ranged from 0.001/sec to 100/sec in order to obtain the strain rate sensitivity. The flow stress decreases at the high temperature while the strain rate sensitivity increases. Tensile tests of polymers are rather tricky since polymer does not elongate uniformly right after the onset of yielding unlike the conventional steel. A new method is suggested to obtain the stress-strain curve accurately. A true stress-strain curve was estimated from modification of the nominal stress-strain curves obtained from the experiment. The modification was carried out with the help of an optimization scheme accompanied with finite element analysis of the tensile test with a special specimen. The optimization method provided excellent true stress-strain curves by enforcing the load response coincident with the experimental result. The material properties obtained from this paper will be useful to simulate the airbag expansion at the normal and harsh operating conditions.

  • Tendon failures in bonded post-tensioned bridges over the last two decades have motivated ongoing investigations on various aspects of unbonded tendons and their monitoring methods. Recent research shows that change of strain distribution in anchor heads can be useful in detecting wire breakage in unbonded construction. Based on this strain variation, this paper develops a damage detection model that enables an automated tendon monitoring system to identify and locate wire breaks. The first part of this paper presents an experimental program conducted to study the strain variation in anchor heads by generating wire breaks using a mechanical device. The program comprised three sets of tests with fully populated 19-strand anchor head and evaluated the levels of strain variation with number of wire breaks in different strands. The sensitivity of strain variation with wire breaks in circumferential and radial directions of anchor head in addition to the axial direction (parallel to the strand) were investigated and the measured axial strains were found to be the most sensitive. The second part of the paper focuses on formulating the wire breakage detection framework. A finite element model of the anchorage assembly was created to demonstrate the algorithm as well as to investigate the asymmetric strain distribution observed in experimental results. In addition, as almost inevitably encountered during tendon stressing, the effects of differential wedge seating on the proposed model have been analyzed. A sensitivity analysis has been performed at the end to assess the robustness of the model with random measurement errors.

  • In this paper, we present a strain-sensitive composite skin-like film made up of piezoresistive zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods embedded in a flexible poly(dimethylsiloxane) substrate, with added reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to facilitate connections between the nanorod clusters and increase strain sensitivity. Preparation of the composite is described in detail. Cyclic strain sensing tests are conducted. Experiments indicate that the resulting ZnO-PDMS/rGO composite film is strain-sensitive and thus capable of sensing cycling strain accurately. As such, it has the potential to be molded on to a structure (civil, mechanical, aerospace, or biological) in order to provide a strain sensing skin.

  • In this study, we fabricated Bi-2223/Ag high temperature superconducting tapes using PIT(Powder-In-Tube) process to apply the superconducting magnet, cable and etc. It is inevitable to deform the superconducting taps with axial strain for application. Therefore, for the characterization of the strain sensitivity of the superconducting properties, the degradation of Bi-2223/Ag tapes due to axial strain were investigated by measuring the critical current as a function of applied tension strain and external magnetic field. The critical current of Bi-2223/Ag tapes were decreased slightly up to 0.3∼0.4% applied strain but, drastically decreased more than these strains. Superconducting filament cores consisted of brittle ceramic fibers were broken easily by the large strain and current path were decreased simultaneously.
