  • Anchorage devices play an important role in post-tensioned bridge structures since they must sustain heavy loads in order to permit the transfer of the prestressing force to the structure. In external prestressing, the situation is even more critical since the anchorage mechanisms, with the deviators, are the only links between the structure and the tendons throughout the service life of the structure. The behaviour of anchorage devise may be studied by using the finite element method. To do so, each component of the anchorage must be adequately represented in order to approximate the anchor mechanism as accurately as possible. In particular, the modelling of the jaw/tendon device may be carried out using the real geometry of these two components with an appropriate constitutive contact law or by replacing these components by a single equivalent. This paper presents the numerical study of a mono-strand anchorage device. The results of a comparison between two different representations of the jaw/tendon device, either as two distinct components or as a single equivalent, will be examined. In the double-component setup, the influence of the wedge configuration composing the jaw, and the influence of lubrication of the anchor, will be assessed.

  • This research is results of experimental and numerical works on characteristic of strength increase and bearing capacity in dredged and reclaimed soil due to desiccation shrinkage. For a soil sampled from southern coastal area in Korea, basic soil property tests and standard consolidation test with falling head permeability tests were carried out to obtain consolidational characteristics of soil. Double cone penetration test, laboratory vane test and unconfined compression test were also performed to investigate the change of shear strength with degree of desiccation. Model tests were performed in 1G environment and 30G level artificially accelerated condition by using the centrifuge model test facilities to investigate the bearing capacity of desiccated ground. Test results were analyzed by using the theoretical and load-settlement characteristics method proposed by Meyehof & Hanna(1978). On the other hands, the numerical technique, using the finite strain consolidation theory considering the effect of desiccation was used to estimate the appropriate time of using heavy construction equipments in field with respect to strength increase due to desiccation.

  • In this paper, we present to evaluate physiological activity of Robinia pseudo-acacia leaf and its skin penetration using liposome and cell penetrating peptide. After extraction with Robinia pseudo-acacia leaf using the distilled water and supercritical, various physiological activities were examined. In antioxidants experiments, the total concentration of polyphenol compounds was determined to be 56.88 mg/g in hydrothermal extract, 45.07 mg/g in supercritical extract. The DPPH radical scavenging ability at 1,000 ㎍/mL was 33.97% in supercritical extract. The scavenging effect on SOD experiment at 500 ㎍/mL was 76.41% in supercritical extract. In the antimicrobial experiments, the hydrothermal extract had no effect, but supercritical extract represented maximum clear zone of 14.00 mm in Staphylococcus aureus strain. Liposome containing the RSE (Robinia pseudo-acacia leaf supercritical extract) reduced particle size and stabilized zeta potential. In the epidermal permeability experiment, it was confirmed that the permeation of liposome containing the RSE and cell penetrating peptides was remarkable.

  • This paper describes the state of the art for the development of metallic armor materials which are mainly used as armor plates of the combat vehicles. Several important micro-structural features affecting ballistic properties of the metallic armor are discussed. Optimization of the strength and toughness balance of the metallic armor is necessary for the improvement of the ballistic performance resulting from maximizing the resistance to the penetration of the bullet and also to brittle failure of the plates. Understanding and control of the adiabatic shearing phenomenon developed remarkably during high strain rate deformation is needed to prevent brittle failure of the metallic armor materials.

  • The Nd:YAG laser welding process is one of the most advanced manufacturing technologies owing to its high speed and penetration, and has increased the automation and flexibility of an entire industry. Laser welding of dissimilar metals has been widely used to improve the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of industrial parts. The objective of this research is to investigate the influence of process parameters on the welding of SM45C and STS304 with CW Nd:YAG lasers. Bead-on-plate welding tests were carried out for several combinations of the experimental conditions. In order to quantitatively examine the characteristics of the dissimilar welding, the welding quality of the cut section, strain-stress behavior, and hardness of the welded part were investigated.

  • A denitrification bacterium was isolated from riverbed soil and identified as Ochrobactrum sp., whose specific enzymes for denitrification metabolism were biochemically assayed or confirmed with specific coding genes. The denitrification activity of strain G3-1 was proportional to glucose/nitrate balance, which was consistent with the theoretical balance (0.5). The modified graphite felt cathode with neutral red, which functions as a solid electron mediator, enhanced the electron transfer from electrode to bacterial cell. The porous carbon anode was coated with a ceramic membrane and cellulose acetate film in order to permit the penetration of water molecules from the catholyte to the outside through anode, which functions as an air anode. A non-compartmented electrochemical bioreactor (NCEB) comprised of a solid electron mediator and an air anode was employed for cultivation of G3-1 cells. The intact G3-1 cells were immobilized in the solid electron mediator, by which denitrification activity was greatly increased at the lower glucose/nitrate balance than the theoretical balance (0.5). Metabolic stability of the intact G3-1 cells immobilized in the solid electron mediator was extended to 20 days, even at a glucose/nitrate balance of 0.1.

  • VIC (Vortex-In-Cell) method for viscous incompressible flow is presented to simulate the wake behind a modified NACA16 foil. With uniform rectangular grid, the velocity in field is calculated using streamfunction from vorticity field by solving the Poisson equation in which FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) is combined with 2nd order finite difference scheme. Here, LES(Large Eddy Simulation) with Smagorinsky model is applied for turbulence calculation. Effective viscosity is formulated using magnitude of strain tensor(or vorticity). Then the turbulent diffusion as well as viscous diffusion becomes particle strength exchange(PSE) with averaged eddy viscosity. The well-established panel method is combined to obtain the irrotational velocity and to apply the no-penetration boundary condition on the body panel. And wall diffusion is used for no-slip condition numerical results of turbulent stresses are compared with experimental results (Bourgoyne, 2003). Before comparing process, LES(Large Eddy Simulation) SGS(Subgrid scale) stress is transformed Reynolds averaged stress (Winckelmans, 2001).

  • Magnaporthe oryzae, the causal agent of rice blast, forms a specialized infection structure, called an appressorium, which is crucial for penetration and infection of the host plant. Pharmacological data suggest that calcium/calmodulindependent signaling is involved in appressorium formation in this fungus. To understand the role of the calcium/calmodulin-activated protein phosphatase on appressorium formation at the molecular level, MCNA, a gene encoding the catalytic subunit of calcineurin, was functionally characterized in M. oryzae. Transformants expressing sense/antisense RNA of MCNA exhibited significant reductions in mycelial growth, conidiation, appressorium formation, and pathogenicity. cDNA of MCNA functionally complemented a calcineurin disruptant strain (cmp1::LEU2 cmp2::HIS3) of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. These data suggest that calcineurin A plays important roles in signal transduction pathways involved in the infection-related morphogenesis and pathogenicity of M. oryzae.

  • The use of the crumb rubber as an asphalt binder modifier may contribute to road maintenance and repair. The adhesion properties of the crumb rubber modified asphalt (CRMA) sealant have attracted interest due to brittle and adhesion failure of asphalt binders at low temperatures. In this study, the influence of a flexibilizer as a modifier for CRMA at low temperatures was investigated. Their properties were measured using the penetration, the softening point, the tensile and tensile adhesion tests at low temperature. The tensile adhesion strength and the strain of CRMAs were increased with increasing ductile deformation of the CR and the asphalt binder in the flexiblizer modified CRMAs. It was found that the flexibilizer concentration was an important factor for tensile and adhesion properties of CRMAs at low temperatures.

  • Elastic and plastic deformation behaviors of the high purity aluminum and the silica glass were studied using nanoindentation and finite element analysis(FEA) techniques. Berkovich- and cone-type indenters were used for the nanoindentation test. Deformation behaviors and nanoindent profiles of elastic, elastic-plastic or plastic materials were clearly visualized by FEA simulation. Effects of the penetration depth and strain hardening on the deformation behavior were examined. Pile-up and sink-in behaviors were studied by using FEA technique. Degree of pile-up or sink-in was found to be a function of the ratio of elastic modulus to yield strength of materials. FEA was found to be an effective method to study deformation behaviors of materials under nanoindentation, especially in the case when pile-up or sink-in phenomena occurred.
