  • Due to the recent advent of fast storage media, the memory management system needs to reconsider the configuring of a page unit. In this paper, we analyze the effect of the page size on memory performance as fast storage is adopted. Specifically, we analyze the TLB hit ratio and the page fault ratio as the workload and the page size are varied in desktop and smartphone environments. Our analysis shows that the influence of the page size depends on the system and workload conditions in desktop systems. However, in smartphone systems, the effect of the page size on memory performance is not large, and is not also sensitive to workloads. We expect that the analysis of this paper will be helpful in configuring the page size of given workloads under the system with fast storage media.

  • Bit patterned media (BPM) is a high capacity storage system and has attracted a great deal of attention as next generation data storage. When BPM is made with high density, the space between the islands narrows, because BPM records one bit in an island. For this reason, BPM has inter-symbol interference in all directions, unlike in current storage systems where it is in only one direction. In this paper, we propose an equation for compensating two-dimensional ISI. We conduct experiments on track misregistration. When using the proposed inter-symbol interference preprocessing, the BER performance is improved, regardless of the amount of track misregistration.

  • In this paper, for continuous media access operations performed by Clustered Continuous Media Storage Server (CCMSS) system, we present the analytical model based on the open queueing network, which considers simultaneously two critical delay factors, the disk I/O and the internal network, in the CCMSS system. And we derive by using the analytical model the stochastic model for the total service delay time in the system. Next, we propose the integrated stochastic admission control model for the CCMSS system, which estimate the maximum number of admittable service requests at the allowable service failure rate by using the derived stochastic model and apply the derived number of requests in the admission control operation. For the performance evaluation of the proposed model, we evaluated the deadline miss rates by means of the previous stochastic model considering only the disk I/O and the propose stochastic model considering the disk I/O and the internal network, and compared the values with the results obtained from the simulation under the real cluster-based distributed media server environment. The evaluation showed that the proposed admission control policy reflects more precisely the delay factors in the CCMSS system.

  • A militimedia data is a data mixed of formatted data like an audio and video. Multimedia data has characteristics that it need large amount of storage, wide network bandwith andreal time responsibolity. Because of these characteristocs, the VOD server and continous media storage server have a disk stripe structure or disk stripe sructure or disk array structure(RAID).In the parallel disk access system,high-speed play-back of continous media using segment interleavung may not ensure Qos pf other cioents because of the concentrated load within some disks. The load concentration of disks is related to both the number of disks in the system and playback rate of contimous media. In this paper. we describe that high-speed playback scheme, which is independent of the number of disk and plyback rate can be achieved by technique of changing the in-teval of access to segnent location. We show the experimental result of this technique in this pater.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the effect of the pattern height on the readback signal characteristics of the magnetic nanopillar tops and trench bottoms. In addition, we discuss the applicability of the present method to the production of patterned magnetic media, which can be obtained by depositing magnetic thin films on the molded nanopillars with passive heating. We found that the individual magnetic island deposited on each molded nanopillars with passive heating is a single magnetic domain and confirmed that its magnetization can be successfully reversed by applying an external magnetic field.

  • [ $TiO_2$ ] nanoparticles are added into UV curable resin to increase the refractive index of the cover-layer which is laminated on the media for cover-layer incident NFR. High refractive index is required for the cover-layer operating for the solid immersion lens optics with high effective numerical aperture. The eyepattern could be achieved from the cover-layer coated 20 GB ROM disc in which the refractive index of the cover-layer was 1.75, but the gap servo was unstable due to the rough surface of the cover-layer. Even though the light loss due to the nanoparticles is not serious, the rough microstructure is developed by adding the nanoparticles in the organic binder material. To achieve smooth surface for the stable gap servo, some special techniques should be added, for example the solubility of the nanoparticles should be enhanced by the optimization of the surface of the nanoparticles.

  • Most traditional database systems exploit a record-oriented model where the attributes of a record are placed contiguously in a hard disk to achieve high performance writes. However, for read-mostly data warehouse systems, the column-oriented database has become a proper model because of its superior read performance. Today, flash memory is largely recognized as the preferred storage media for high-speed database systems. In this paper, we introduce a column-oriented database model based on flash memory and then propose a new column-aware flash indexing scheme for the high-speed column-oriented data warehouse systems. Our index management scheme, which uses an enhanced $B^+$-Tree, achieves superior search performance by indexing an embedded segment and packing an unused space in internal and leaf nodes. Based on the performance results of two test databases, we concluded that the column-aware flash index management outperforms the traditional scheme in the respect of the mixed operation throughput and its response time.

  • The column-oriented database storage is a very advanced model for large-volume data analysis systems because of its superior I/O performance. Traditional data storages exploit row-oriented storage where the attributes of a record are placed contiguously in hard disk for fast write operations. However, for search-mostly datawarehouse systems, column-oriented storage has become a more proper model because of its superior read performance. Recently, solid state drive using MLC flash memory is largely recognized as the preferred storage media for high-speed data analysis systems. In this paper, we introduce fast column-oriented data storage model and then propose a new storage management scheme using a cross compressed replication for the high-speed column-oriented datawarehouse system. Our storage management scheme which is based on two MLC SSD achieves superior performance and reliability by the cross replication of the uncompressed segment and the compressed segment under high workloads of CPU and I/O. Based on the results of the performance evaluation, we conclude that our storage management scheme outperforms the traditional scheme in the respect of update throughput and response time of the column segments.

  • In a P2P-based distributed storage system where peers frequently join and leave, it is essential to guarantee not only data availability but also playback quality comparable to that provided by local storage devices when playing back video files with real-time constraints. In addition, cloud storage services based on distributed storage systems provide each user with the functionality to share their files with other users, so when multiple users request playback of the same video file at the same time, all playback should be supported seamlessly in real time. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a scheme that process multiple simultaneous playback requests for each video file in real time as well as data availability in a P2P-based distributed storage system that supports file sharing. This scheme can support real-time simultaneous playback and efficiently use storage space by adjusting the amount of redundant data encoded through erasure coding according to the number of concurrent playback requests for each video file.

  • Recently, Flash Memory Drives are one of the best media to support portable and desktop computers' storage devices. Their features include non-volatility, low power consumption, and fast access time for read operations, which are sufficient to present flash memories as major database storage components for desktop and server computers. However, we need to improve traditional storage management schemes based on HDD(Hard Disk Drive) and RAID(Redundant Array of Independent Disks) due to the relatively slow or freezing characteristics of write operations of SSDs, as compared to fast read operations. In order to achieve this goal, we propose a new storage management scheme called Hetero-Mirroring based on traditional HDD mirroring scheme. Hetero-Mirroring-based storage management improves RAID-1 operation performance by balancing write-workloads and delaying write operations to avoid SSD freezing.
