  • In the shipyard, aerial images are acquired at regular intervals using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for the management of external storage yards. These images are then investigated by humans to manage the status of the storage yards. This method requires a significant amount of time and manpower especially for large areas. In this paper, we propose an automated management technology based on a semantic segmentation foundation model to address these challenges and accurately assess the status of external storage yards. In addition, as there is insufficient publicly available dataset for external storage yards, we collected a small-scale dataset for external storage yards objects and equipment. Using this dataset, we fine-tune an object detector and extract initial object candidates. They are utilized as prompts for the Segment Anything Model(SAM) to obtain precise semantic segmentation results. Furthermore, to facilitate continuous storage yards dataset collection, we propose a training data generation pipeline using SAM. Our proposed method has achieved 4.00%p higher performance compared to those of previous semantic segmentation methods on average. Specifically, our method has achieved 5.08% higher performance than that of SegFormer.

  • In recent years new recording media and materials for head-disk interface (HDI) have been developed in order to increase the recording density of storage devices and decrease the cost of production. It is well known that HDI in hard disk drive (HDD) needs high durability and stability. The tribological characteristic of commercialized HDI systems is an important indicator of the HDD reliability. In this study, experimental investigation on the wear coefficient of commercialized hard disk slider pads was performed. The slider was placed on top of a hard disk and allowed to slide for a set distance. The wear of the pads was measured after the sliding tests. The result showed that the micro-bumps in commercialized HDD have extremely low wear coefficient of $10^{-11}$. The results of this work may be used for further development of the HDI technology for HDD.

  • We report the new design of a miniature electromagnetic actuator for probe-based data storage with anti-vibration mechanism. The actuator consists of a media substrate, silicon frame, 2 pairs of magnets, a spacer, and a printed circuit board (PCB). The total area of the device is $11.2{\times}11.2 mm^2$ while the data recording area is $7.4{\times}7.4 mm^2$. A net momentum fee structure was included for high vibration resistance. The simulation shows that the lateral vibration can be reduced to below 100 nm for 1 G acceleration if the counter mass is adjusted with $1\%$ difference. The peak power for ${\pm}50 {\mu}m$ displacement is below 50 mW for a actuator with a resonance at 200 Hz.

  • The hybrids of zeolite and metal hydride were prepared to improve the absorption properties as media for hydrogen storage. The zeolites which was deposited on the surface by metal hydride vapor showed excellent absorption properties and sodalite was proved to be better than zeolite-A in the reaction velocity and hydrogen storage capacity. This suggests the metal hydride could be used effectively as catalytic active material for enhancing the hydrogen storage in zeolite containing $\alpha$-cages and furthermore the hydrogen molecules have preference tobe occluded in their cavities containing $\alpha$-cages more effectively than that containing a and $\beta$-cages.

  • Super-resolution near-field structure (super-RENS) technology and solid immersion lens (SIL) based near-field (NF) technology have been expected as promising approaches to increase data capacity or areal density of optical disc. Super-RENS technology has been studied until now using mainly numerical aperture (NA) of 0.85 far-field optical system and possibility of tangential data density increment have been presented. NF technology has been studied with NA over 1 and presented demonstration of removable performance. To achieve much higher density, approach to increase NA of super-RENS by NF technology (Near-Field Super-Resolution, NFSR) can be a candidate and we think this technology would be advantageous compared to wavelength reduction or much higher NA increment of NF technology or much smaller effective optical spot size reduction of far-field super-resolution technology. In this paper we present readout result of ROM media having monotone pits using NF optical system with wavelength of 405nm and NA of 1.84 surface type SIL. GeSbTe material was used for super resolution active layer and pit length is 37.5nm which is shorter than resolution limit 55nm. We present the feasibility of NFSR technology by confirming the CNR threshold according to readout power (Pr) and CNR 33dB over threshold Pr.

  • In this paper, we propose a scheduling scheme that can efficiently serve I/O requests having deadlines in flash storage. The I/O requests with deadlines, namely, real-time requests, are assumed to be issued for streaming services of continuous media. Since a Web-based streaming server commonly supports downloads of HTMLs or images, we also aim to quickly process non-real-time I/O requests, together with real-time ones. For this purpose, we adopt the well-known rate-reservation EDF (RR-EDF) algorithm for determining scheduling priorities among mixed I/O requests. In fact, for the use of an EDF-style algorithm, overhead of task's switching should be low and predictable, as with its application of CPU scheduling. In other words, the EDF algorithm is inherently unsuitable for scheduling I/O requests in HDD storage because of highly varying latency times of HDD. Unlike HDD, time for reading a block in flash storage is almost uniform with respect to its physical location. This is because flash storage has no mechanical component, differently from HDD. By capitalizing on this uniform block read time, we compute bandwidth utilization rates of real-time requests from streams. Then, the RR-EDF algorithm is applied for determining how much storage bandwidth can be assigned to non-real-time requests, while meeting deadlines of real-time requests. From this, we can improve the service times of non-real-time requests, which are issued for downloads of static files. Because the proposed scheme can expand flexibly the scheduling periods of streams, it can provide a full usage of slack times, thereby improving the overall throughput of flash storage significantly.
