  • In this paper, we propose the design and implementation of the storage-based data sharing system in the separate network environment to improve efficiency of data transmission. The previous system generates files per received packet and transmit files to another network through storage. This system causes inefficiency by reading unnecessary blocks, when it transmits a number of files through storage. Our proposed system deals with this inefficiency by adopting concept of snapshot. Consequently, we create one file with snapshot so that the number of files can be reduced and the file size can be optimized according to the block size. The proposed system improves the response time significantly with the minimized reading of unnecessary blocks, compared to the previous system.

  • Supply chains for agricultural commodities with their various constraints such as production lead time, seasonal production, and methods of storage are limited in the extent to which techniques like Just-in-Time (JIT) inventory management can be applied. It is beyond the ability of producers to control harvest time and many agricultural products are perishable so that they can incur exceptional losses in storage if they are not handled correctly. This is a source of additional costs and inefficiency in supply chain management. The purpose of this study is to reduce or eliminate such sources of loss and inefficiency and to identify success factors for the JIT inventory management system where it can be applied for agricultural products. Where JIT techniques can be applied in supply chain management for agricultural products, costs such as transportation, inventory, and storage losses can be reduced with concurrent increases in efficiency. In the paper, some of the problems associated with applying JIT inventory control methods in supply chain management for agricultural commodities will be reported through a series of case studies.

  • Temperature, relative humidity and ventilation are closely related one another, and they are the main factors to be controlled for the environmental control system of a storage facility. Conventional environmental control systems do not consider the interrelationship between temperature, relative humidity and ventilation, which results in low performance and high energy consumption. To overcome the inefficiency of the conventional ones, it was developed an on-off control system based on the interrelationship between the factors. The usefulness of the system was illustrated with the results produced by a set of experiments in a real world.

  • The state-of-the-art techniques of storing XML data, modeled as an XML tree, are node-based in the sense that they are centered around XML node labeling and the storage unit is an XML node. In this paper, we propose a generalization of such techniques so that the storage unit is an XML subtree that consists of one or more nodes. Despite several advantages with such generalization, a major problem would be inefficiency in XPath processing where the stored subtrees are to be parsed on the fly in order for the nodes inside them to be accessed. We solve this problem, proposing a technique whereby no parsing of the subtrees involved in XPath processing is needed at all unless they contain the nodes of the final query result. We prove that the correctness of XPath processing is guaranteed with our technique. Through implementation and experiments, we also show that the overhead of our technique is acceptable.

  • It is a difficult task for decision makers(DMs) to choose an appropriate release plan which balances the conflicts between water storage and hydro-electric energy generation in a multi-reservoir operation problem. In this study, we proposed a DEA-based ranking procedure by which the DM can rank the potential alternatives and select the best solution among the Pareto-optimal solutions. The proposed procedure can resolve the problem of mix inefficiency that may cause errors in measuring the efficiency of alternatives. We applied the proposed procedure to the multi-reservoir operation problem for the Geum-River basin and could choose the best efficient solution from the Pareto-set which were generated by the Coordinated Multi-Reservoir Operating Model.

  • The TES (Thermal Energy Storage) cooling system utilizing cheaper off-peak electricity has been applied just for building air-conditioning currently and causes limitation of usage rate and inefficiency of national resources utilization. In this regard, more says the necessity to apply TES system in industrial cooling system which is longer using period and wider usage. In this study, we will approve the technical and economical improvement in efficiency of industrial cooling system applied TES system by utilizing cheaper off-peak electricity and it will attribute the promotion of TES system and stabilization of supply and demand of electric power by proving the necessity to develop more efficient industrial cooling system by combining TES system.

  • Since the modern computer architecture was suggested by Von Neumann in 1945, computer has become inevitable for our life. This brilliant growth of computer has been led by device miniaturization trend, so called Moore's law. Especially, the explosive growth of memory devices such as DRAM and Flash have played key role in huge enlarging utilization of computer. However, abrupt increase of data used for many applications in big data era provoke the excessive energy consumption of data center which results from the inefficiency of conventional memory-storage hierarchy. As a solution, the application of new memory devices has been brought up for innovative memory-storage hierarchy. In this paper, the current development status and prospect of new memory devices will be discussed.

  • File I/O buffer cache plays an important role in narrowing the wide speed gap between the main memory and the secondary storage. However, data loss or inconsistencies may occur if the system crashes before the data that has been updated in the buffer cache is flushed to storage. Thus, most operating systems adopt a daemon that periodically flushes dirty data to the secondary storage. In this study, we show that periodic flushes account for 30-70% of the total write traffic to storage and remove this inefficiency by implementing a small, non-volatile buffer cache. Specifically, we present space-efficient management techniques, such as delta-write and fragment-grouping, and show that the storage write traffic and throughput can be improved by a margin of 44.2% and 23.6%, respectively, with only a small NVRAM.

  • Recent advances in energy harvesting (EH) technology have motivated the adoption of rechargeable mobile devices for communications. In this paper, we consider a point-to-point (P2P) wireless communication system in which an EH transmitter with a non-ideal rechargeable battery is required to send a given fixed number of bits to the receiver before they expire according to a preset delay constraint. Due to the possible energy loss in the storage process, the harvest-use-and-store (HUS) architecture is adopted. We characterize the properties of the optimal solutions, for additive white Gaussian channels (AWGNs) and then block-fading channels, that maximize the energy efficiency (i.e., battery residual) subject to a given rate requirement. Interestingly, it is shown that the optimal solution has a water-filling interpretation with double thresholds and that both thresholds are monotonic. Based on this, we investigate the optimal double-threshold based allocation policy and devise an algorithm to achieve the solution. Numerical results are provided to validate the theoretical analysis and to compare the optimal solutions with existing schemes.
