  • This paper presents the design, fabrication and performance of a reinforced concrete beam strengthened by GFRP box plate and its possibility for structural rehabilitations. The load capacity, ductility and failure mode of reinforced concrete structures strengthened by FRP box plate were investigated and compared with traditional FRP plate strengthening method. This is intended to assess the feasibility of using FRP box plate for repair and strengthening of damaged RC beams. A series of four-point bending tests were conducted on RC beams with or without strengthening FRP systems the influence of concrete cover thickness on the performance of overall stiffness of the structure. The parameters obtained by the experimental studies were the stiffness, strength, crack width and pattern, failure mode, respectively. The test yielded complete load-deflection curves from which the increase in load capacity and the failure mode was evaluated.

  • Shear lag effect can be an important phenomenon to consider in design of the steel-concrete composite beams. Researchers have found that the effect can be strongly related with the moment distribution, the stiffness and the ductility of the composite beams. For continuous composite beams expected to sustain hogging moment, the shear lag effect can be more distinct as cracking of the concrete slab reduces its shear stiffness. Despite its influences on behaviour of the steel-concrete composite beams, a method for calculating the shear lag effect in steel-concrete composite beams sustaining hogging moment is still not available. Shear lag effect in steel-concrete composite beams sustaining hogging moment is investigated in this paper. A method was proposed specifically for predicting the effect in the cracked part of the steel-concrete composite beam. The method is validated against available experimental data. At last, FE studies are conducted for steel-concrete composite beams with different design parameters, loading conditions and boundary conditions to further investigate the shear lag effect and compare with the proposed method.

  • The seismic performance of the reinforced concrete (RC) special-shaped column to steel beam connections with steel jacket used in the RC column to steel beam fabricated frame structures was investigated in this study. The three full-scale specimens were subjected to cyclic loading. The failure mode, ultimate bearing capacity, shear strength capacity, stiffness degradation, energy dissipation capacity, and strain distribution of the specimens were studied by varying the steel jacket thickness parameters. Test results indicate that the RC special-shaped column to steel beam connection with steel jacket is reliable and has excellent seismic performance. The hysteresis curve is full and has excellent energy dissipation capacity. The thickness of the steel jacket is an important parameter affecting the seismic performance of the proposed connections, and the shear strength capacity, ductility, and initial stiffness of the specimens improve with the increase in the thickness of the steel jacket. The calculation formula for the shear strength capacity of RC special-shaped column to steel beam connections with steel jacket is proposed on the basis of the experimental results and numerical simulation analysis. The theoretical values of the formula are in good agreement with the experimental values.

  • The steel plate shear wall with beam-only connected infill plate (SSW-BO) is an innovative lateral load resisting system consisting of infill plates connected to surrounding beams and separated from the main columns. In this research, the effects of perforation diameter as well as slenderness ratios of infill plates on the hysteresis behavior of SSW-BO systems were studied experimentally. Experimental testing is performed on eight one-sixth scaled one-story SSW-BO specimens with two plate thicknesses and four different circular opening ratios at the center of the panels under fully reversed cyclic quasi-static loading in compliance with the SAC test protocol. Strength, stiffness, ductility and energy absorption were evaluated based on the hysteresis loops. It is found that the systems exhibited stable hysteretic behavior during testing until significant damage in the connection of infill plates to surrounding beams at large drifts. It is also seen that pinching occurred in the hysteresis loops, since the hinge type connections were used as boundaries at four corners of surrounding frames. The strength and initial stiffness degradation of the perforated specimens containing opening ratio of 0.36 compared to the solid one is in the range of 20% to 30% and 40% to 50%, respectively.

  • There are few technical documents regulated structural performance and engineering criteria in domestic market for Structural insulated panels in Korea. This paper was focused to identify fundamental performance under monotonic loading and cyclic loading for SIPs in shear wall application. Load-displacement responses of total twelve test specimens were recorded based on shear stiffness, strength, ultimate load and displacement. Finally energy dissipation of each specimen was analyzed respectively. Monotonic test results showed that ultimate load was 44.3 kN, allowable shear load was 6.1 kN/m, shear stiffness was 1.2 MN/m, and ductility ratio was 3.6. Cyclic test was conducted by two kinds of specimens: single panel and double panels. Cyclic loading results, which were equivalent to monotonic loading results, showed that ultimate load was 45.4 kN, allowable shear load was 6.3 kN/m. Furthermore the accumulated energy dissipation capability for double panels was as 2.3 times as that for single panel. Based on results of structural performance test, it was recommended that the allowable shear load for panels should be 6.1 kN/m at least.

  • This paper proposed a novel form of reinforced concrete (RC) shear wall confined with boundary columns. The structural effect of applying steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) in the wall-column systems was studied. Three full-scale wall samples were constructed including two RC wall-RC column samples with different stirrup ratios and one RC wall-SFRC column sample. Low frequency cyclic testing was carried out to investigate the failure modes, hysteretic behavior, load-bearing capacity, ductility, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation. ABAQUS models were set up to simulate the structural behavior of tested samples, and good agreement was achieved between numerical simulation and experimental results. A further supplementary parametric study was conducted based on ABAQUS models. Both experimental and numerical results showed that increasing stirrup ratio in boundary columns did not affect much on load bearing capacity or stiffness degradation of the system. However, applying SFRC in boundary columns showed significant enhancement on load bearing capacity. Numerical simulation also shows that the structural performances of RC wall-SFRC column system were comparable to a wall-column system fully with SFRC.

  • To make direct comparisons regarding the cyclic behavior of thin steel plate shear walls (TSPSWs) with different infill-to-boundary frame connections, two TSPSWs were tested under quasi-static conditions, one having the infill plate attached to the boundary frame members on all edges and the other having the infill plate connected only to the beams. Also, the bare frame that was used in the TSPSW specimens was tested to provide data for the calibration of numerical models. The connection of infill plates to surrounding frames was achieved through the use of self-drilling screws to fish plates that were welded to the frame members. The behavior of TSPSW specimens are compared and discussed with emphasis on the characteristics important in seismic response, including the initial stiffness, ultimate strength and deformation modes observed during the tests. It is shown that TSPSW specimens achieve significant ductility and energy dissipation while the ultimate failure mode resulted from infill plate fracture at the net section of the infill plate-to-boundary frame connection after substantial infill plate yielding. Experimental results are compared to monotonic pushover predictions from computer analysis using strip models and the models are found to be capable of approximating the monotonic behavior of the TSPSW specimens.

  • Experimental research was performed on the 6m-6m two-span, continuous composite beams. Background research for the crack width control of continuous composite bridges in the Eurocode-4 is reviewed and equationsfor the calculation of crack width considering tension stiffening are presented. The behavior of the continuous composite beams was investigated using the initial and stabilized cracking process of the concrete slab in tension. Test results showed that the current requirement of minimum reinforcement for ductility in Korea Highway Bridge Design Codes could be reduced. The flexural stiffness of cracked continuous composite beams can be evaluated by the uncracked section analysis until the stabilized cracking stage. An empirical equation for the relationship between the stress of tensile reinforcements and crack width was obtained from the test results.

  • Generally, earthquake-resistant structural systems have to ensure the sufficient stiffness and ductility for stability In this paper, the spatial structures are applied an isolation system to boundary parts between roof systems and sub-structures. So, it is necessary to examine the characteristics of dynamic behaviors of spatial structures governed by higher modes rather than lower modes different from the cases of high-rise buildings. The objectives of this paper are to develop the equivalent lumped mass model to simplify an analytical processes and to investigate the dynamic behaviors of roof systems according to the mass and stiffness of sub-structures as a fundamental study of performance design for the spatial structures.
