  • Stereoscopic video for 3DTV service is emerging as a main content of the Post-HD age in the multimedia industry, and also it starts a ripple effect to build infrastructure for 3DTV service throughout the related industries such as creating contents, consumer electronics and the broadcasting. Thus, "Technical Specification of Stereoscopic Video over MPEG-2 TS for 3DTV Service" for providing a standard for 3DTV broadcasting transmitter and receiver interface is under development by the 3DTV WG8061 in ITA, Korea. This paper provides verification of the functionalities, problems and future work of the above specification with designed test-bed. Through making a test bed, this paper try to verify not only the functionality of standard but also backward compatible for the present technology and abstract problems to would be reviewed and supplemented.

  • This paper describes the development of the 3DDAC mk.4 system, which is a brand new implementation on the research program. The 3DDAC is a fatigue-less stereoscopic display system that is provided with a compensating function of accommodation for binocular disparity 3D image representation. The mk.4 system also features a light-weight HMD style.

  • Radiation source imaging system is essential for protecting of radiation leakage accidents and minimizing damages from the radioactive materials, and is expected to play an important role in the nuclear plant decommissioning area. In this study, the stereoscopic camera principle was applied to develop a new radiation imaging device technology that can extract the radiation three-dimensional position information. This radiation three-dimensional imaging device (K3-RIS) was designed as a compact structure consisting of a radiation sensor, a CCD camera, and a pan-tilt only. It features the acquisition of stereoscopic radiation images by position change control, high-resolution detection by continuous scan mode control, and stereoscopic image signal processing. The performance analysis test of K3-RIS was conducted for a gamma-ray source(Cs-137) in radiation calibration facility. The test result showed that a performance error with less than 3% regardless of distances of the objects.

  • This paper reports a depth-adaptive sharpness adjustment algorithm for stereoscopic perception improvement, and presents its field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation results. The first step of the proposed algorithm was to estimate the depth information of an input stereo video on a block basis. Second, the objects in the input video were segmented according to their depths. Third, the sharpness of the foreground objects was enhanced and that of the background was maintained or weakened. This paper proposes a new sharpness enhancement algorithm to suppress visually annoying artifacts, such as jagging and halos. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can improve stereoscopic perception without intentional depth adjustments. In addition, the hardware architecture of the proposed algorithm was designed and implemented on a general-purpose FPGA board. Real-time processing for full high-definition stereo videos was accomplished using 30,278 look-up tables, 24,553 registers, and 1,794,297 bits of memory at an operating frequency of 200MHz.

  • The position of stereoscopic objects is an important parameter to induce three-dimensional effects such as convergence control and image distortions. There are three kinds of stereoscopic cameras : Parallel, Toed-in, and Horizontal-Moving cameras. In this paper we proposed the method for estimating stereoscopic object position with a horizontal-moving camera. In the previous methods, viewing angle ratios are used to estimate the object positions. Our method based on the horizontal movements of the camera to estimate the positions. Using geometrical models of shooting and display we experimented with two methods. Results of experiments showed the distance of stereoscopic objects on virtual screen related to horizontal movement.

  • In this paper, the 2D/3D converting algorithm is proposed. The single frame of 2D image is used fur the real-time processing of the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm creates a 3D image with the depth map by using the vertical position information of a object in a single frame. In order to real-time processing and improve the hardware complexity, it performs the generation of a depth map using the image sampling, the object segmentation with the luminance standardization and the boundary scan. It might be suitable to a still image and a moving image, and it can provide a good 3D effect on a image such as a long distance image, a landscape, or a panorama photo because it uses a vertical position information. The proposed algorithm can adapt a 3D effect to a image without the restrictions of the direction, velocity or scene change of an object. It has been evaluated with the visual test and the comparing to the MTD(Modified Time Difference) method using the APD(Absolute Parallax Difference).

  • This paper proposes a method to provide the high quality 3D broadcasting service in a mobile broadcasting system. In this method, audio and video data are delivered through a heterogeneous network, consisting of a mobile network as well as a broadcasting network, due to the limited bandwidth of the broadcasting system. However, it is more difficult to synchronize the left and right video frames of a 3D stereoscopic service, which come through different types of networks. The proposed method suggests the use of the offset from the initial timestamp of RTP (Real Time Protocol) to determine the order of frames and to find the pair of a left and a right frame that must be played at the same time. Additionally, a new signaling method is introduced for a mobile device to request a 3D service and to get the initial RTP timestamp.
