  • This paper introduces an effective method for generating 3D stereoscopic images that gives immersive 3D experiences to viewers using mobile-based binocular HMDs. Most of previous AR systems with monocular cameras have a common limitation that the same real-world images are provided to the viewer's eyes without parallax. In this paper, based on the assumption that viewers focus on the marker in the scenario of marker based AR, we recovery the binocular disparity about a camera image and a virtual object using the pose information of the marker. The basic idea is to generate the binocular disparity for real-world images and a virtual object, where the images are placed on the 2D plane in 3D defined by the pose information of the marker. For non-marker areas in the images, we apply blur effects to reduce the visual discomfort by decreasing their sharpness. Our user studies show that the proposed method for 3D stereoscopic image provides high depth feeling to viewers compared to the previous binocular AR systems. The results show that our system provides high depth feelings, high sense of reality, and visual comfort, compared to the previous binocular AR systems.

  • 3D Vision system has many applications recently but popularization have many problems that need to be overcome. Volumetric display may process a amount of visual data and design the high efficient vision system for display. In case of stereo system for volumetric display, disparity vectors from the stereoscopic sequences and residual images with the reference images has been transmitted, and the reconstructed stereoscopic sequences have been displayed at the receiver. So central issue for the design of efficient volumetric vision system lies in selecting an appropriate stereo matching and robust vision system. In this paper, we propose high efficient vision system with the reduction of rectification error which can perform the 3D data extraction efficiently with low computational complexity. In experimental results with proposed vision system, the proposed method can perform the 3D data extraction efficiently with reducing rectification error and low computational complexity.

  • The compression performance of HEVC (high efficiency video coding) is improved 40%, compared to H.264/AVC. Since the existing 3D video CODEC is based on H.264/AVC or MPEG-2, we can improve the compression performance when we use the proposed stereoscopic video coding method based on HEVC. Since the stereoscopic video has the temporal and inter-view correlations, the videos of the left and right cameras encode together to improve the performance. Especially, we implemented the proposed technique using HM(HEVC test model) 3.4. To compare the performance of the proposed method, we only compare the right view video which is coded using the inter-view prediction. The proposed method which is considered inter-view correlation is improved the performance which BDBR reduce about 36.24% and BDPSNR increase approximately 1.19 dB compared to the separated-coding method.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm that creates three-dimensional (3D) stereoscopic video from two-dimensional (2D) video encoded by H.264 instead of using two cameras conventionally. Very accurate motion vectors are available in H.264 bit streams because of the availability of a variety of block sizes. 2D/3D conversion algorithm proposed in this paper can create left and right images by using extracted motion information. Image type of a given image is first determined from the extracted motion information and each image type gives a different conversion algorithm. The cut detection has also been performed in order to prevent overlapping of two totally different scenes for left and right images. We show an improved performance of the proposed algorithm through experimental results.

  • In this paper, we propose a method of producing a stereoscopic image from multiple images captured from a monoscopic camera. By translating a camera in the horizontal direction, left and right images are chosen among N captured images. For this, image edges are extracted and a rotational angle is estimated from edge orientation. Also, a translational vector is also estimated from the correlation of projected image data. Then, two optimal images are chosen and subsequently compensated using the rotational angle as well as the translational vector in order to make a satisfactory stereoscopic image. The proposed method was performed on thirty-two test image set. The subjective visual fatigue test was carried out to validate the 3D quality of stereoscopic images. In terms of visual fatigue, the 3D satisfaction ratio reached approximately 84%.

  • We firstly report liquid crystal shutter based on plastic film and its application to 3D shutter for stereoscopic displays. Plastic liquid crystal shutters have remarkable advantages compared to conventional glass liquid crystal shutters. They are thin, light and non-breakable so that very comfortable 3D shutter eye-wear can be realized using them. The concepts, optical performances and reliability test results of plastic film liquid crystal shutters are presented.

  • This paper presents a visual feedback system that controls a micromanipulator using multiple microscopic vision information. The micromanipulation stations basically have optical microscope. However the single field-of-view of optical microscope essentially limits the workspace of the micromanipulator and low dept-of-field makes it difficult to handle 3D-shaped micro objects. The system consists of a stereoscopic microscope, three CCD cameras, the micromanipulator and personal computer. The use of stereoscopic microscope which has long working distance and high depth-of-field with selective field-of-view improves the recognizability of 3D-shaped micro objects and provides a method for overcoming several essential limitations in micromanipulation. Thus, visual feedback information is very important in handling micro objects for overcoming those limitations and provides a mean for the ...

  • Stereoscopic 3D video can be transmitted by frame-compatible packing format to fulfill the compatibility requirement with the existing digital TV. Then, the reduced stereo image needs to be expanded to the original size at the receiver. This paper proposes an adaptive interpolation method for the discarded image lines. The horizontal line-based linear filter and NEDI6 filter are used selectively for the interpolation of each pixel. Experimental results show that the NEDI6 combined with the horizontal line-based linear filter yields better image quality than the bilinear method by around 0.6dB.

  • The dual-stream based stereoscopic 3D broadcasting standard was developed in 2011. EBS broadcasted 3DTV experimental service according to this standard in April 2012. Dual-stream based 3DTV broadcasting is service-compatible and backward-compatible, so viewers who have legacy 2D HDTV can watch the broadcasting content as 2D. And 3DTV viewers can select watching 2D or 3D. Since 3D content production is not usual yet for terrestrial broadcasters, only some particular programs in specific periods will be broadcasted as 3D at the initiatory stage. For it, stable viewing condition is strongly required for both 2D viewers and 3D viewers. This paper suggests broadcasting transmission system structure and effective switching scheme for stable 2D and 3D viewing conditions in the case of dual-stream based terrestrial 3DTV broadcasting.
