Purpose: This study was conducted to define factors influencing psychosocial adaptation of patients with a permanent colostomy. Independent variables including perceived stress, stoma care self-efficacy, self-care behavior, self-esteem and family support were used to predict psychosocial adaptation. Method: The data was analyzed using the SPSS pc program window version 12.0 for descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression. Ninety patients with a permanent colostomy were recruited between September 2007 and May 2008. The reliability of the instruments was tested with Cronbach's alpha which ranged from .78 to .92. Result: The results were as follows: The mean psychosocial adaptation score was 3.05. There were significant correlations between all the predictive variables and psychosocial adaptation (r= .63~ -.43, p<.001). Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that self-esteem (40%), stoma care self-efficacy (7%), perceived stress (2%), and self-care behavior (2%) accounted for 51% of the variance in psychosocial adaptation. Conclusion: These findings indicate that to improve psychosocial adaptation of patients with permanent colostomy, the major related factors identified in this study should be considered.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the factors influencing the quality of life of patients with hemophilia and to provide the data for health promoting intervention in order to improve their quality of life. Method: The subjects of this study were involved 186 male patients with hemophilia by convenience sampling. These results were analyzed statistically by frequency, percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, and Stepwise multiple regression. Results: There were significant differences in the quality of life according to the frequency of bleeding. Quality of life showed negative relationships and health problems, bleeding, limitation of joint motion, and depression with stepwise Multiple Regression analysis for quality of life revealed that the most powerful predictor was depression. Depression, health problem, and limitation of joint motion accounted for 64.6% of the variance in the quality of life of patients with hemophilia. Conclusion: Therefore it is necessary to develop nursing interventions with these variables to increase the quality of life for patients with hemophilia.
Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations among the internal health locus of control, depression, perceived health status, self efficacy, social support, and health-promoting behavior in Iranian breast cancer survivors and to determine influential variables. Materials and Methods: A predictive design was adopted. By convenient sampling the data of 262 breast cancer survivors in Iran were collected by questionnaires during 2014. Data were analyzed applying descriptive statistics, t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The internal health locus of control, depression, perceived health status, self efficacy, social support and undergoing chemotherapy all correlated significantly with the health-promoting lifestyle. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that social internal health locus of control, depression, perceived health status, self efficacy and social support and chemotherapy accounted for about 39.8% of the variance in health promoting lifestyle. The strongest influence was social support, followed by self efficacy, perceived health status, chemotherapy and depression. Conclusions: The results of the study clarifed the seriousness of social support, self efficacy, perceived health status and depression in determining the health-promoting lifestyle among Iranian breast cancer survivors. Health professionals should concentrate on these variables in designing plans to promoting a healthy lifestyle.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors determining health behavior for middle-aged adults in relation to stress coping behaviors, cognitive factors, social support, and sociodemographic variables. Method: The questionnaire survey was carried out on a convenience sample of 203 middle aged in a community settings. The data analysis procedure included frequency, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regressions using health behavior as dependent variable. Result: Among the sociodemographic variables, factors such as sex, educational and eonomic levels were associated with the health behaviors. There were significant correlations between health behaviors and saliency of health, social support, and positive-stress coping behaviors. Stepwise multiple regression revealed that the factors such as positive-stress coping behaviors, saliency of health, sex, and education turned out to be significant affecting factors. Twenty eight percent of varience in health behavior was explained by these factors. Conclusion: Positive-stress coping methods were turned out to be the most important effective factors in practicing of health behaviors of middle aged. The necessity of an intervention considering the situation related to their stress and coping methods in middle aged so as to promote positive health behaviors was suggested.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between professor trust and learning flow in allied health students and to provide the basic data for the improvement of curriculum and teaching method. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 263 allied health students. The questionnaire consisted of 27 questions of professor trust by Likert 5 scale and 29 questions of learning flow by Likert 6 scale. Cronbach's alpha in this study was 0.97 in professor trust, 0.96 in learning flow. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation and stepwise multiple regressions. Results: The score was 3.72 in professor trust and 3.46 in learning flow. There were positive correlations between learning flow and professor trust including intimacy, professional, teaching skills and leadership. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that learning flow was related with professor trust. Conclusions: The learning flow depends on professor trust. Based on the research, improvement directions that put strong emphasis on low section of professor trust and learning flow must be placed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship of peer relationships, self-reported attachment security, perceived parental rearing attitudes, and loneliness in upper elementary school-age children. Methods: The data were collected from 207 students in grades 5 or 6, and descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson correlation coefficients and Stepwise multiple regression were used with the SPSS/PC 12.0 program to analyze the data. Results: There was a significant difference in loneliness between the upper 25% and lower 25% groups of peer relationships, perceived parental rearing attitudes, and self-reported attachment security. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed affection-hostility in parental rearing attitudes, validation and conflict in peer relationships, and attachment security explained 39.6% of the total variance in loneliness. Conclusion: These results may contribute to a better understanding of loneliness in upper elementary school-age children. The results of the present study indicate a need to develop nursing interventions to prevent and manage children‘s loneliness.
This study was conducted because of the investigator's concern for the high incidence and fatal nature of cancer in prime years of human life. The purpose of this study was to investigate risk factors on compilance for preventive health behavior of cancer. The data on which the analysis was based come from a survey of 828 married men & women, 40-59 years old. The instrument of the study were 'Health Belief Model' by Becker. The Data was analyzed using X--test, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient, Stepwise Multiple Regression. The followings were the result; 1. The examined group had a higher scores than the non-examined group in health belief variables. (p<0.001) 2. The higher level of health belief variables, the higher level of compliance for preventive health behavior is. (p<0.001) 3. The Stepwise Multiple Regression of compliance for preventive health behavior on the variables in the health belief model; Approximataly 65.5% of the variance of compliance for preventive health behavior was accounted for by health concern, susceptibility and barriers in combination. This meant that other factors seemed to influence preventive health behavior since the linear combination of variables failed to explain the remaining 34.5% of preventive health behavior of cancer. It tended to cost doubt on the usefulness of 5 variables in this model. Therefore further study to investigate the influential factors preventive health behavior of cancer is necessary.
Objectives: The main purpose of this study was to examine factors associated with depression of middle school students in relation to self-esteem, type A behavior pattern, and locus of control. Methods: A survey was administered to a convenience sample of 309 middle school students. The data analysis procedure included frequency distribution, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression using depression as the dependent variable. Results: The prevalence of depression was 27.2%. Stepwise multiple regression revealed that the factors such as self-esteem(${\beta}$=0.422, p<0.001), type A behavior pattern(${\beta}$=0.166, p<0.001), and locus of control(${\beta}$=-0.165, p<0.001) turned out to be significant affecting factors. Forty nine percent of variance in depression was explained by these factors(40% of variance by self-esteem). Conclusions: The findings suggest that personal internalizing variables should be considered when developing mental health education program to prevent the occurrence of depression for middle school students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between depression, alexithymia, social support and somatic symptom in adolescents. Methods: The subjects were 1,519 adolescents in Seoul. Radloff's CES-D (The Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression scale) for depression, Bagby, Parker and Taylor's TAS (Toronto Alexithymia Scale) for alexithymia, Park's social support and Derogatis's SCL-90 (Brief Symptom Inventory & Matching Clinical Rating Scale) were used. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, t or F test, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Depression and somatic symptom were lower but social support was higher when compared to mean score. The somatic symptom was significantly positive correlations to age, depression, alexithymia but no correlation to social support. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that 21.8% of the somatic symptom was significantly accounted for depression, alexithymia, social support, gender, economic status, living alone, and living with parent. Conclusion: These results suggest that depression, alexithymia, living alone can be potential risk factors for somatic symptom in the adolescents. Therefore, these findings will give useful information for developing a promotion program focused on social support in the adolescents.
