A hybrid mount featuring rubber element and piezoelectric actuator is devised to reduce vibration when starting a vehicle engine. As a first step, a passive mount adopting rubber element is manufactured and its dynamic characteristics are experimentally evaluated. After evaluating dynamic characteristics of the manufactured inertial piezoelectric actuator, the proposed hybrid mount is then established by integrating the piezoelectric actuator with the rubber element for performance improvement at non-resonant high frequencies. A mathematical model of the established active vibration control system is formulated and expressed in the state space form. Subsequently, sliding mode controller (SMC) is designed to attenuate the vibration transmitted from the base excitation. Finally, control performances of the proposed hybrid mount are evaluated such as transmissibility in frequency domain and time responses.

To achieve synchronized motion between a wearable robot and a human user, the redundancy must be resolved in the same manner by both systems. According to the seven DOF (Degrees of Freedom) human arm model composed of the shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints, positioning and orientating the wrist in space is a task requiring only six DOFs. Due to this redundancy, a given task can be completed by multiple arm configurations, and thus there exists no unique mathematical solution to the inverse kinematics. This paper presents analysis on the kinematic and dynamic aspect of the human arm movement and their effect on the redundancy resolution of the human arm based on a seven DOF manipulator model. The redundancy of the arm is expressed mathematically by defining the swivel angle. The final form of swivel angle can be represented as a linear combination of two different swivel angles achieved by optimizing different cost functions based on kinematic and dynamic criteria. The kinematic criterion is to maximize the projection of the longest principal axis of the manipulability ellipsoid for the human arm on the vector connecting the wrist and the virtual target on the head region. The dynamic criterion is to minimize the mechanical work done in the joint space for each two consecutive points along the task space trajectory. As a first step, the redundancy based on the kinematic criterion will be thoroughly studied based on the motion capture data analysis. Experimental results indicate that by using the proposed redundancy resolution criterion in the kinematic level, error between the predicted and the actual swivel angle acquired from the motor control system is less than five degrees.
In order to improve the thermal efficiency of an internal combustion engine, various ignition timing control systems were examined and the best one was chosen. The parts used for the systems were a microcomputer system with DAS, 8 bit output port (D-FLIP FLOP), three types of isolation circuit, two types of ignition timing pulse generator, three types of switching circuit and two types of high voltage ignition circuit. Most systems did not operate well due to the effects of electromagnetic waves and surge currents occurring when the ignition began or ended with resulting high voltage. The best ignition timing control system was found to be the combination of (microcomputer system)-(ignition timing pulse generator using step motor position control pick-up)-(switching circuit using TR logic)-(high voltage ignition circuit using CDI).

Fuel injection pressure has steadily increased in diesel engines for the purpose of improving fuel efficiency and cleaning exhaust gas, but it has now reached a point, where the cost for higher pressure does not warrant additional gains. Common rail systems on modern diesel engines have fuel pumps that are mechanically driven by crankshaft. The pumps actually house two pumping module inside: a low pressure pump component and a high pressure pump component. Part of the fuel compressed by the low pressure component returns to the tank in the process of maintaining the pressure in the common rail. Since the returning fuel represents pumping loss, fuel economy improves if the returned fuel can be eliminated by using a properly controled electrical fuel pump. As the first step in developing an electrical fuel pump the fuel supply system on a 6 liter diesel engine was modeled with AMESim to analyze the workload and the fuel feed rate of the injection pump, and the results served as basis for selecting a suitable servo motor and a reducer to drive the pump. A motor controller was built using a DSP and a program which controls the common rail pressure using a proportional control method based on the target fuel pressure information from the engine ECU. A test rig to evaluate performance of the fuel pump is implemented and used to show that the newly developed electrically driven fuel pump can satisfy the fuel flow demand of the engine under various operating conditions when the rotational speed of the pump is adequately controlled.

Stainless steel ball bearings are used in the control element drive mechanism and driving mechanisms such as step motor and gear boxes for the integral nuclear reactor, SMART. The bearings operate in pressurized pure water (primary coolant) at high temperature and should be lubricated with only this water because it is impossible to supply greases or any additional lubricant since the whole nuclear rector system should be perfectly sealed and the coolant cannot contain ingredients for bearing lubrication. Temperature of water changes from room temperature to about 120 degree Celsius and pressure rises up to 15MPa in the nuclear reactor. It can be anticipated that the frictional characteristics of the ball bearings changes according to the operating conditions, however little data are available in the literature. It is found that friction coefficient of 440C stainless steel itself does not change sharply according to temperature variation from the former research, and the friction coefficient is about 0.45 at low speed range. In this research frictional characteristics of the assembled ball bearings are investigated. A special tribometer is used to simulate the axial loading and the bearing operating conditions, temperature and pressure in the driving mechanism in the nuclear reactor. Highly purified water is used as lubricant ‘ and the water is heated up to 120 degree Celsius and pressurized to 15MPa. Friction force is monitored by the torque transducer.

The purpose of this study to improve the shoulder wheel that is used frequently during shoulder circumduction exercise in a park, to link the shoulder wheel to a game application comprising various shoulder circumduction exercise and shoulder ROM exercise, and to enjoy the game during the exercises. A step motor was added to the shoulder wheel, and the rotating speed and rotating angle, and rotating direction can be controlled. The shoulder height, different for different people, can be controlled as well, so that any user can use this device. The developed application content includes the game elements, to enjoy the repetitive and boring exercise with fun and interest, and the control to adjust the degree of difficulty. This was to help users heighten their desire to rehabilitate by inducing active participation during repetitive shoulder rehabilitation exercise because the game vests users with intrinsic motivation and immersion. If the shoulder wheel and application contents proposed in this study are used, shoulder diseases can be prevented in advance by performing muscle strengthening exercises required in an aging society. This study is expected to contribute to the field of research related to serious games and rehabilitation.

Noninvasive radial artery pulse wave has been widely used not only for the pulse wave analysis(PWA) itself but also for assessment of arterial stiffness with estimated aortic pulse wave from peripheral pulse wave. However, it has been found that the deformation of pulse shape can be caused readily by changing measuring position, indentation pressure, and so on. So, in this study, we have developed a system which can measure radial pulse wave and skin displacement simultaneously while the indentation body goes down to occlude subject's radial artery. This system can be divided into a measuring apparatus part, an indentation control hardware part, a data acquisition part and a control and computation part. And, the measuring apparatus consists of an arm-rest, a step motor, an indentation body, a laser displacement sensor(LK-G30, Keyence Co.) and pulse wave sensor. Under load-free condition and radial artery loaded condition, the evaluation of developed system has been performed. From these results, we can conclude: 1) The developed system can control the indentation body quantitatively and the adopted laser displacement sensor shows linear output characteristic even with skin as a reflector. 2) This system can measure the pulse wave and the displacement of indentation body, that is, skin displacement simultaneously at each specific level of indentation body. 3) This system can provide the number of motor steps used to get down the indentation body, the measured skin displacement, the calculated indentation pressure, the calculated pulse pressure and the pulse waveform as well as the information generated by combining these with each others. 4) This system can reveal the relationship between the morphological changes of pulse wave and the estimated displacement of radial artery wall by indentation. Consequently, the developed system can furnish more abundant information on radial artery than previous diagnosis systems based on tonometric measurement. In further study, we expect to setup the standard measuring process and to concrete the algorithm for the estimation of radial artery's diameter and of displacement of radial artery's wall. Furthermore, with well designed clinical studies, we hope to turn out the usefulness of developed system in the field of cardiovascular system evaluation.

Global Environment Laboratory at Yonsei University in Seoul ($37.57^{\circ}N$, $126.95^{\circ}E$) has carried out the ozone layer monitoring program in the framework of the Global Ozone Observing System of the World Meteorlogical Organization (WMO/GAW/GO3OS Station No. 252) since May of 1984. The daily measurements of total ozone and the vertical distribution of ozone amount have been made with the Dobson Spectrophotometer (No.124) on the roof of the Science Building on Yonsei campus. From 2004 through 2006, major parts of the manual operations are automated in measuring total ozone amount and vertical ozone profile through Umkehr method, and calibrating instrument by standard lamp tests with new hardware and software including step motor, rotary encoder, controller, and visual display. This system takes full advantage of Windows interface and information technology to realize adaptability to the latest Windows PC and flexible data processing system. This automatic system also utilizes card slot of desktop personal computer to control various types of boards in the driving unit for operating Dobson spectrophotometer and testing devices. Thus, by automating most of the manual work both in instrument operation and in data processing, subjective human errors and individual differences are eliminated. It is therefore found that the ozone data quality has been distinctly upgraded after automation of the Dobson instrument.
This paper implemented quadcopter-type drone system and proposed the heuristic method for obtaining the optimum gain coefficients in order to minimize the settling time. Control system for quadcopter posture stabilization reads the posture data from accelerator and gyro sensor, revises the original posture data using Mahony filter, and drives 4 DC motors using PID controller. The first step of the proposed method is to obtain the gain coefficients using the Ziegler-Nichols method, and then determine the optimum gain coefficients using the heuristic method at the next 3 steps. The experimental result shows that the maximum overshoot decreases from 44.3 to 29.8 degrees and the settling time decreases from 2.6 to 1.7 seconds compared to the Ziegler-Nichols method. Therefore, we proved that the proposed method works well in quadcopter flight system with high motor noise while reducing trial and error to obtain the optimal PID gain coefficients.
