  • The choice of suitable hip implant is one of important factors in the total hip arthroplasty (THA). In clinical view point, an improper adaptation of hip implant might induce abnormal stress distribution to the bone, which can shorten the lifespan of replaced hip implant. Currently, interest in the custom-designed hip implants has increased as studies reveal the significance of geometric shape of patient's femur in modeling and designing the implants. In this study, we have developed custom-designed hip implant models with various sizes, and analyzed the stress distribution in the bone and bone cement using the Finite Element Method. It was found that minimizing the gap between implant stem and femoral cavity is crucial to minimize the stress concentration in the bone.

  • The present investigation dealt with observation and experiments concerning the growth and differentiation of hop plant, using the varieties of Cascade(C), Shinshuwase(Sh), and Hallertau(H). The results were as follows: (1) Life cycle of hop plants. The annual growth period of hop plant was devided chiefly into 3 phases, dormant, vegetative and reproductive. (2) Growth of main stem. The hop vine begun to grow in the middle of May and grow vigorousely in the middle and latter of June, then gradually decline or stops at the middle of July and the early of August. (3) Growth of lateral vines. By the statistical analysis, it is judged that the varieties of H and Sh were more grown than that of C. H and Sh were not significant, but H and Sh from C were significant in 5% level. (4) Fresh weight and water content of hop cone. Hop cone in fresh weight of C variety was higher than those of other two varieties and water content of hop cone was decreased with time elapse in three races together. (5) Growing point. Histological view of hop varities in each was different. C showed form of sweet potato, H showed form of round, and Sh showed form of ellipse. (6) Shape of the leaf. C and H were 3 lobes, but Sh is 3∼5 lobes. Generally, the color is dark green. (7) Hop cones. Hop cones are as follows.

  • We have investigated the cytotoxic potential of tellurium (Te) nanowires in BALB/3T3 fibroblast cells. Te nanowires were synthesized through an aqueous phase surfactant assisted method. Toxicological experiments, such as analysis of morphological changes, MTT assay, DAPI staining, and estimation of intracellular reactive oxygen species, were carried out to reveal the cytotoxic effects of Te nanowires. Te nanowires were found to be cytotoxic at all concentrations tested, in a dose-dependent manner. The UV/Vis spectra of Te nanowires suspended in a culture medium showed drastic changes and disappearance of two broad absorption peaks. The physicochemical properties such as, surface charge, size, and shape of Te nanowires were found to be altered during exposure of cells, due to the instability and agglomeration of nanowires in the culture medium. These results suggest that the chemical components of the DMEM medium significantly affect the stability of Te nanowires. In addition, TEM images revealed that necrosis was the basic pattern of cell death, which might stem from the formation of toxic moieties of tellurium, released from nanowire structures, in the bioenvironment. These observations thus suggest that Te nanomaterials may pose potential risks to environmental and human health.

  • The virus infection rates and disease symptoms of three major citrus viruses, citrus tristeza virus (CTV), satsuma dwarf virus (SDV), and citrus tatter leaf virus (CTLV), were investigated at 35 citrus orchards in Cheju Island from 1995. The infection rates of CTV, SDV, and CTLV were 69.8%, 8.6%, and 9.3%, respectively. However, depending on cultivars there were significant differences in the infection rates. The infection rates of CTV were highest in early satsuma mandarin (Citrusunshiu) with 80.9% and lowest in very early satsuma mandarin with 51.9%. In SDV, the highest was in very early stasuma mandarin with 23.1% and the lowest was in early satsuma mandarin with 6.3%. And the highest infection rate in very early satsuma mandarin with 17.9% and the lowest in tangors with 7.3% in CTLV. The symptoms of virus-infected citrus were very diverse; small and abnormal shape of fruits, abnormal leaves such as narrow boat and small spoon shapes of leaves, stem-pitting on the twig, bud-union crease and swelling of the graft part, reduction of the plant vigor and poor yields.

  • Three Arabidopsis cDNAs, MAM1, CYP79F1, and CYP83A1, required for aliphatic glucosinolate biosynthesis were introduced into Chinese cabbage by Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation. The transgenic lines overexpressing MAM1 or CYP83A1 showed wild-type phenotypes. However, all the lines overexpressing CYP79F1 displayed phenotypes different from wild type with respect to the stem thickness as well as leaf width and shape. Glucosinolate contents of the transgenic plants were compared with those of wild type. In the MAM1 line M1-1, accumulation of aliphatic glucosinolates gluconapin and glucobrassicanapin significantly increased. In the CYP83A1 line A1-1, all the aliphatic glucosinolate levels were increased, and the levels of gluconapin and glucobrassicanapin were elevated by 4.5 and 2 fold, respectively. The three CYP79F1 transgenic lines exhibited dissimilar glucosinolate profiles. The F1-1 line accumulated higher levels of gluconapoleiferin, glucobrassicin, and 4-methoxy glucobrassicin. However, F1-2 and F1-3 lines demonstrated a decrease in the levels of gluconapin and glucobrassicanapin and an increased level of 4-hydroxy glucobrassicin.

  • The present study was carried out to obtain some basic informations of the breeding of tobacco varieties. Genetically divergent 8 varieties, 3 flue-cured, 2 burley and 3 sun-cured tobaccos, were used in half diallel cross. In order to analyze the heterosis, combining abilities, modes of inheritance and correlations for some agronomic and chemical characters, 8 parents and 28 $F_2$ were tested. The results obtained were summarized as follows: The percentages of heterosis for yield, stem diameter, internode length and total sugar content in $F_2$ hybrid were positive , where-as those for the other characters were negative. Yield had significant positive genotypic and phenotypic correlations with plant height, days to flower, leaves per plant, leaf length, leaf width and leaf shape index (Leaf length/leaf width). General (GCA) and specific combining abilities (SCA) for all characters of $F_2$ hybrid were significant. In the effect of GCA, yield was greater in combinations of Bulgaria and Xanthi, days to flower and leaves per plant were those of Burley 21 and Va 528, leaf length and width were those of Coker 139, respectively. In the effect of SCA, the major part of characters were greater than those of others in the combinations of Burley 21, Va 528, Hicks.

  • A fungal isolate collected from infected paprika (Capsicum annuum var. grossum) was characterized as Sclerotinia sclerotiorum based on its ability of sclerotium formation, physiological and molecular properties. When the isolate was grown on potato dextrose agar, oatmeal agar, and malt extract agar, it grew most well on PDA. Optimal temperature and pH for its growth were $25^{\circ}C$ and pH 7, respectively. The fungal isolate produced sclerotia on PDA within 10 days, and the color and shape of the sclerotia were similar to those of S. sclerotiorum. The ITS rDNA regions including ITS1 and ITS2 and 5.8S sequences were amplified using ITS1F and ITS4 primers from the genomic DNAs of the paprika isolate and other known pathogenic S. sclerotiorum isolated from different crops in Korea, and their nucleotide sequences were determined. Sequence comparison analysis showed the ITS rDNA of the paprika isolate shares 100% sequence identity with those of S. sclerotiorum isolated from red pepper, lettuce and a S. sclerotiorum isolate registered in GenBank DNA database. Neighbor joining analysis based on the ITS rDNA sequence revealed the paprika isolate has very close phylogenetic relationships with known Sclerotinia sclerotiorum isolates. This is the first report that S. sclerotiorum has been found associated with paprika rot in paprika growing countries.

  • Effect of growth light intensity (5% and 20%) and planting density (40, 56, 90/33㎡) on yield and red ginseng quality was investigated in a sandy loam field of ginseng plantation. High growth light intensity had no effect on yield and quality but decreased stem length, leaf area and chlorophyll content and increased specific leaf weight. The optimum planting density was 64/3.3㎡ for both yield and Heaven + Earth grade (HE grade) of red ginseng. HE-shape ginseng rate showed significant positive correlation (P=0.0l) with HE grade rate.

  • We present the galaxy luminosity function (LF) of the Abell 119 cluster. Deep images in u, g, r bands were taken using MOSAIC 2 CCD on a Blanco 4-m telescope at CTIO. Based on scaling relations at faint magnitudes and spectroscopy at bright magnitudes, accurate membership of galaxies is determined. The LF is fitted by a single Schechter function and a two components (Gauss + Schechter) function. Blue galaxies are well fitted by a single Schechter function with steep slope ${\alpha}$ ~ -1.55). Red galaxies in the inner, high density region are fitted by single Schechter function with shallow slope (${\alpha}$ ~ -1.30), while red galaxies in the outer, low density region are well fitted by a two components function. The different slope of LFs between the inner and outer seems to stem from the luminosity segregation of A119 indicating larger number ratio of luminous to faint ratio towards the cluster center. The different shape of LFs seems to be resulted from the different composition of luminous and faint galaxies among main-cluster, sub-cluster, and infall region.

  • This study aims to identify the meaning and formation cause of a style, and the essential elements of style formation, through psychobiological research as well as an analysis of the designs of Iris Van Herpen, a fashion designer, who in just 6 years has developed into a world-renowned new designer. As a result, it has been found that the psychobiological causes to form a style stem from the action of 'long-term memory', which is consolidated by 'selective attention', 'perceptional subjectivity', the principle of the 'neuron's connection specificity and invariance', and the principle of a 'neuronal signal's unilateral flow'. With such action, Herpen could develop her own original composition techniques. The formative shapes created by such composition techniques are characterized by enumeration, superposition, and hanging. The study has also found that the essential elements for a designer to be able to form his/her own style include 'aesthetic originality' in which the designer views the property of a thing from his/her inherent perspective, and finds the uniqueness from the thing that only he/she can express, 'technical differences' that are creative and original, and 'formative specificity' that is summarized into one property through an impressive shape.
