For the purpose of Improving the sounding boards for the conventional GAYAKUM, I was making approximately 202 specimens of radial board, 371 specimens of tangential board by cutting along the grain and the part of stem and 31 specimens of the disjointed traditional GAYAKUM made in Paulownia coreana. And it was conducted to measure specific gravity, dynamic Young's modulus, internal friction, resonant frequency, velosity of sound and width of annual ring by the method of the frexural vibration in a free-free bar in the audio frequency range. And it confirmed the juvenile wood by measuring wood fiber length of specimens. It was also conducted to investigate dynamic properties and moisture absorption by various heat-treatment and to test dynamic Young's modulus and internal friction for the disjointed conventional GAYAKUM. The results obtained were summarized as follow: 1. The Juvenile wood is located within about 7 annual rings from the pith in Paulownia coreana. 2. As increased with the specific gravity, the dynamic Young's modulus had more and more increased, but the internal friction had slightly decreased. 3. I think that radial board would be good for sounding board wood. because radial board is higher than tangential board in dynamic Young's mudulus and internal friction is lower than tangential board. 4. The value of mean dynamic Young's modulus on the conventional GAYAKUM, radial board and tangential board of 604 samples is $0.4283\pm0.037(\times10^{11}dyne/cm^2)$, $0.4316\pm(\times10^{11}dyne/cm^2)$ and $0.4234\pm0.112(\times10^{11}dyne/cm^2)$ respectively. The value of the radial board showed little higher than that of conventional GAYAKUM, but It had a similar tendency between conventional GAYAKUM and tangential board. 5. The annual ring width by four aspect is more narrow in north and west than that of others. 6. The values of specific gravity and dynamic Young's modulus in the mature wood showed higher than those of juvenile wood. 7. As the grain angle in the butt wood more increased to bark from pith, the dynamic Young's modulus were low. Then it was not good for sounding board. 8. It appeared that the heat-treatment for sounding board wood had a more effect to do the treatment of hotiron on surface after heat-treatment during 24 hours in $60^{\circ}C$ temperature. 9. As increased with the temperature, the rate of moisture absorption of heat-treatment wood had decreased. In conclusion, I thought that the sounding board wood for GAYAKUM would had the most effect to do the treatment of hotiron on surface after heat-treatment during 24 hours in $60^{\circ}C$ temperature using the radial board of mature wood.
Some wood anatomical characteristics of seven chestnut cultivars (Tanzawa, Ibuki, Arima, Ginyose, Tsukuba, Riheiguri, and Mansung) grown in Korea were examined in this study. We investigated the radial variation of wood components such as diameter and number of earlywood vessel element and ray density in cross section and number and height of ray in tangential section. Discs were taken from the stem of seven chestnut cultivars at breath height and cut into the radial strip. Cross, radial, and tangential sections, 10 to $20{\mu}m$ thick, were sliced with a sliding microtome. These sections were stained, dehydrated, and mounted with Canada balsam according to common procedure. Measurement and observation were performed with a light microscopy. In all chestnut cultivars, radial and tangential diameter of vessel element increased but number of vessel element per $mm^2$ decreased with increasing tree age. Ray spacing (per mm) in cross section from pith to bark showed no significant variation, while number of ray per $mm^2$ increased but ray height decreased with the increase of tree age. Conclusively, the results obtained in present study were thought to be some valuable information for separating juvenile and adult wood as well as identifying chestnut cultivars.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of bulb size, type of media, depth of planting, and nutrient compositions on sprouting and growth of tissue cultured garlic microbulbs in hydroponic culture. Early and increased sprouting were observed when the microbulbs were transplanted into soil planted in shallow (1 cm in depth), while bulb size and fresh weight of the whole plant increased in deep planting (3 cm in depth). Bulb size have greatly influenced on not only sprouting rate but also plant growth after planting. Large bulbs resulted in high growth rate such as number of leaves, stem width, plant height, and increase in bulb size after planting. It was shown that Oriental nutrient solution (N=0.17, P=0.45, K=1.29, Ca=2.44, and Mg=0.98 me/L) was more effective in sprouting and further growth of microbulbs as compared to Yamazaki solution (N=0.27, P=0.16, K=1.50, Ca=1.36 and Mg=0.78 me/L). Microbulbs grown in mixture of leaf mould + bark + sand or Baroko showed the most vigrous growth.
The objective of this study was to examine the impact of pruning (P treatment) and transplanting (T treatment) of Acer palmatum on cambial growth and compartmentalization of pruning wounds for one year after treatments. Changes of cambial electrical resistance (CER), sizes of pruning wounds, cambial growth of trunks and stems near the wounds, and total phenols at branch unions during the period were examined using a total of 49 trees. After harvesting, areas of discolored wood behind the wounds, relative proportions of extractives, holocellulose and lignin at branch unions were also determined. CER and the cambial growth of trunk at 30 cm above the ground (TGR) were inversely correlated, and differences of CER and TGR among three treatments were significant. TGRs of control, P treatment and P+T treatment after the treatments were 112.2%, 72.4% and 52.5% of the annual growth for the year before the treatments, respectively. The cambial growth rate of stem (SGR) at 1.5 cm above the branch bark ridge and the closure rate of pruning wound (WCR) for one year after treatments were positively correlated, and WCR of P treatment of 39.8% was significantly higher than that of P+T treatment of 31.8%. Wounds of P+T treatment formed greater discolored area per unit area of pruning wound (D/W Ratio) than those of P treatment significantly. Lower WCR and higher D/W Ratio of P+T treatment suggested less ability of compartmentalizing the wounds than P treatment. Total phenols at branch core of pruning wound for both treatments heightened a month after treatment, and then lowered. The contents at below core of the wound were higher than those at control ones continuously, while they became similar each other at above core. Relatively high phenol contents of the extractives at P+T treatment implied that trees with P+T treatment allocated more energy to compartmentalize their wounds. Holocellulose and lignin contents at the branch core of treated branch unions of both treatments were lower and higher, respectively, than at the same part of the union with living branch, as results of the tree reaction to protection from wounding and microbial invasion.
Objectives : The use of natural products with therapeutic properties is as ancient as human civilisation and, for a long time, mineral, plant and animal products were the main sources of drugs. Catalposide, the major iridoid glycoside isolated from the stem bark of Catalpa ovata G. Don (Bignoniceae) has been shown to possess anti-microbial and anti-tumoral properties. Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is a stress response protein and is known to play a protective role against the oxidative injury. In this study, we examined whether catalposide could protect Neuro 2A cells, a kind of neuronal cell lines, from oxidative damage through the induction of HO-1 protein expression and HO activity. We also examined the effects of catalposide on the productions of tumor necrosis $factor-{\alpha}\;(TNF-{\alpha})$ and nitric oxide (NO) on RAW 264.7 macrophages activated with the endotoxin lipopolysaccharide. Methods : HO-1 expression in Neuro 2A cells was measured by Western blotting analysis. NO and $TNF--{\alpha}$ produced by RAW 264.7 macrophage were measured by Griess reagent and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. Results : The treatment of the cells with catalposide resulted in dose- and time-dependent up-regulations of both HO-1 protein expression and HO activity. Catalposide protected the cells from hydrogen peroxide-induced cell death. The protective effect of catalposide on hydrogen peroxide-induced cell death was abrogated by zinc protoporphyrin IX, a HO inhibitor. Additional experiments revealed the involvement of CO in the cytoprotective effect of catalposide-induced HO-1. In addition, catalposide inhibited the productions of $TNF--{\alpha}$ and NO with significant decreases in mRNA levels of $TNF--{\alpha}$ and inducible NO synthase. Conclusions : Our results indicate that catalposide is a potent inducer of HO-1 and HO-1 induction is responsible for the catalposide-mediated cytoprotection against oxidative damage and that catalposide may have therapeutic potential in the control of inflammatory disorders.
This study aimed to determine the total amount of carbon stored in the aboveground, belowground tree biomass, dead trees, and organic matter in the forest floor and soil of the 36-year-old Pinus rigida stands in Muju. A total of three plots were selected to measure the carbon stored in live trees, dead trees, forest floor, and soil. Results showed that the carbon stocks of P. rigida stands amounted to 51.0 ton C/ha in aboveground biomass and 29.6 ton C/ha in belowground biomass. The distribution ratios of carbon stocks were as follows: 41.0% in stem wood, 36.8% in roots, 12.8% in branches, 6.0% in stem bark and 3.4% in foliage. The carbon stocks in dead tree amounted to 0.65 ton C/ha while it was 6.40 ton C/ha in organic matter in forest floor. The total amount of carbon stocks found in soil was 51.62 ton C/ha: 20.27 ton C/ha at 0~10 cm depth, 12.83 ton C/ha at 10~20 cm depth, 12.27 ton C/ha at 20~30 cm depth, and 6.24 ton C/ha at 30~50 cm depth. It was also observed that, as the soil depth increased, the soil carbon stocks tended to decrease. Results showed that the total amount of carbon stocks of P. rigida stands in Muju was 139.27 ton C/ha; the highest portion of the cumulative carbon stocks was found to be in soil at 37.1%, followed by the aboveground biomass with 36.6%, belowground biomass with 21.3%, forest floor with 4.6 % and dead trees with 0.5 %. This study is expected to provide forest managers accurate estimates of carbon stored in the habitat of P. rigida stands in Muju.
The morphological, anatomical and physiological traits were eximined for Populus alba ${\times}$ glandulosa which is an important planting species in Korea. The results obtained are as follows: 1. External characters in the leaf shape and chaff shape in the catkin were inherited as incomplete dominance but nectar gland was inherited as dominance. 2. Among the 15 selected clones, 9 clones were male, 2 clones female and 2 clones monoecious. 3. There were well-developed cork layers and bast fiber bundles in the bark. 4. Primordial leaves composed of 3 layers of cells and those undifferentiated into palisade and spongy parenchymas differed in its origin. 5. Leaf scare consisted of two kinds of tissues; one is connected to vascular bundle and the other not to vascular bundle. Tissues which had been connected to vascular bundle were isolated with only 2 or 3 layers of cork cells from the outside. 6. There was complicated arrangement in the vascular bundle of petioles. 7. Growth of the hybrid was sensitively influenced by external temperature, day-length and amount of light. In particular, it was apparent in height growth. 8. Flatness, loam soils and a $60{\times}60cm$ spacing might be best factors for the growth of P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa. 9. The rooting of 15 clones was dependant upon external factors. 10. The growth of P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa was best at around 80% of soil moisture content on the basis of plot water capacity. 11. Temperature difference between inside and outside stems below 100cm during the winter was the greatest at the south among seasons and among directions. 12. The sap movement was markedly influenced by air temperature, relative humidity in forest stand and moisture content in stem. 13. Total sugars in the cortex changed with season but did not differ in the dircetion of the stem. 14. Isoperoxidase variations in the leaf were different among 15 clones. Thus, it may be useful as a criterium for clonal identification. 15. The rate of soil moisture content decreased at a rapid slope was faster than that at a slow slope. Poor growth of P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa at the slope was probably due to depletion of soil moisture.
This study was conducted (1) to measure the nitrogen content of various parts of trees in a 24-year-old Pinus koraiensis plantation, providing a harvest method with the least impact on the self-serving mechanisms in the nitrogen status of the ecosystem and (2) to examine the seasonal changes in inorganic nitrogen (ammonium salt and nitrate, separately) at various soil depths and to study the self-serving mechanisms for nitrogen at the ecosystem, providing an appropriate method and season for the application of nitrogen fertilizers. The results obtained in this study were as follows; 1) Of the total nitrogen content of the total tree biomass (except for roots), nearly 61.5% was distributed in the needles, 20% in the branches, 5.5% in the stem bark, and 13% in the stem wood. Therefore, the harvest method of removing only wood parts for pulpwood production has little impact on the self-serving mechanisms of the site's nitrogen status. 2) Inorganic nitrogen concentrations decreased with increasing soil depths. The seasonal average concentration of inorganic nitrogen was highest in early spring and decreased in the following descending order; autumn, tollowed by mid-summer, and early summer. This pattern resulted from the fact that the loss of nitrate was greatly influenced by environmental factors. Thus, it was suggested that an application of active nitrogen fertilizer would be appropriate in spring.
This study explored all domestic and international theories for maintenance and health enhancement of an old and big tree, and carried out the anatomical survey of the operation part of the tree toward he current status of domestic surgery and the perception survey of an expert group, and drew out following conclusion through the process of suggesting its reform plan. First, as a result of analyzing the correlation of the 67 subject trees with their ages, growth status. surroundings, it revealed that they were closely related to positional characteristic, damage size, whereas were little related to materials by fillers. Second, the size of the affected part was the most frequent at the bough sheared part under $0.09m^2$, and the hollow size by position(part) was the biggest at 'root + stem' starting from the behind of the main root and stem As a result of analyzing the correlation, the same result was elicited at the group with low correlation. Third, the problem was serious in charging the fillers (especially urethane) in the big hollow or exposed root produced at the behind of the root and stem part, or surface-processing it. The benefit by charging the hollow part was analyzed as not so much. Fourth, the surface-processing of fillers currently used (artificial bark) is mainly 'epoxy+woven fabric+cork', but it is not flexible, so it has brought forth problems of frequent cracks and cracked surface at the joint part with the treetextured part. Fifth, the correlation with the external status of the operated part was very high with the closeness, surface condition, formation of adhesive tissue and internal survey result. Sixth, the most influential thing on flushing by the wrong management of an old and big tree was banking, and a wrong pruning was the source of the ground part damage. In pruning a small bough can easily recover itself from its damage as its formation of adhesive tissue when it is cut by a standard method. Seventh, the parameters affecting the times of related business handling of an old and big tree are 'the need of the conscious reform of the manager and related business'. Eighth, a reform plan in an institutional aspect can include the arrangement of the law and organization of the old and big tree management and preservation at an institutional aspect. This study for preparing a reform plan through the status survey of the designated old and big tree, has a limit inducing a reform plan based on the status survey through individual research, and a weak point suggesting grounds by any statistical data. This can be complemented by subsequent studies.
A study was conducted to provide some basic data for controlling the Mulberry scale insect(Pseudaulacaspis pentagona T.). Experiments were carried out with checking their field-life, and a few selected insecticides were tested when mulberry leaves were not in use. About 57% of female were survived from the overwintering attached to the bark. Over 80% of the scale were distributed within the range of 30cm from the base of each stem. One hundred percent and 96.7% of eggs were hatched under 25$^{\circ}C$ and 27$^{\circ}C$ respectively. Eighty percent of pupae emerged both under 25 and 27$^{\circ}C$. The Mulberry scale require about 33 days under 25$^{\circ}C$ and 30 days under 27$^{\circ}C$. This species had 2 generations each year in mulberry field in Suwon. Overwintered as a mated female only. Oviposited about 170 eggs under their scale starting from the late April (in 1994) through the mid May (in 1993). Phenthoate EC sprayed in the mid June against the larvae was very effect with over 96% of control value.
