  • Screening of new antioxidants form oriental medicines resulted in the isolation of a new antioxidative compound and eight known compounds from the stem bark of Kalopanax pictus. On the basis of various spectrosopic studies, the structure of the new compound was determined to be 4-rhamnose-3,5-dimethoxybenzoic acid methly ester. Other known compounds were identified as ferulic acid, 4,5,6,-trihydroxyflavanone, 2', 4',4' -trihydroxychalcone, caffeic acid, coniferyl alcohol, syringin, 1,3-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid. These compounds showed lipid peroxidation inhibitory acitivity in rat liver microsomes and free radical scavenging acitivity.

  • The original plant for a medicine, Forsythia collected from Wui-Sung country, Kyungsangpuk-do, Korea, was identified as Forsythia viridissima by its characteristic greenish bark and clearly square stem as observed from the culture works at the Forest Experiment Station of Sung Kyung Kwan University. F. viridissima, an indigenic plant of China, is believed to be introduced to Korea as a nursary stock or brought by seeds sometime in the past. In Korea at present two other species of Forsythia, namely, F. suspensaa and F. japonica have also been cultured besides F. viridissima as an ornamental.

  • A chemical investigation of the stem bark of Melia azedarach var. Japonica (Meliaceae) has led to a new limonoid, 12-hydroxyamoorastatone (1), whose structure has been elucidated by spectroscopic measurements including 2D-NMR. The 2D-NOESY experiment on its di-p-bromobenzoate derivative (1a) has established the relative configuration of 1.

  • 2-Hydroxycinnamaldehyde is an active compound isolated from the Stem Bark of Cinnamomum cassia, a traditional oriental medicinal herb, which has been shown to inhibit tumor cell proliferation. In this study, we investigated the effects of 2-hydroxycinnamaldehyde on the cytotoxicity. induction of apoptosis and the putative pathways of its actions in human promyelocytic leukemia cells (HL-60). • From the EtOAc fraction of the MeOH extract of Albizzia julibrissin (Leguminosae), a rare 5-deoxy flavone (geraldone), a 3',4',7,8-tetrahydroxyflavanone, an isoflavone (daidzein), and five prenylated flavonoids (sophoflavescenol, kurarinone, kurarinol, kuraridin and kuraridinol) were isolated and identified based on the analysis of spectral data.(omitted)
