Purpose: It is not easy to drive a rice-transplanter avoiding underlapped or overlapped transplanting in paddy fields. An automated guidance system for the riding-type rice-transplanter would be necessary to operate the rice-transplanter autonomously or to assist the beginning drivers as a driving aid. Methods: A prototype of guidance system was composed of embedded computers, RTK-GPS, and a power-steering mechanism. Two Kalman filters were adopted to overcome sparse positioning data (1 Hz) from the RTK-GPS. A global Kalman filter estimated the posture of rice-transplanter every one second, and a local Kalman filter calculated the posture from every new estimation of the global Kalman filter with an interval of 200 ms. A PID controller was applied to the row-following mode control. A control method of U-turning mode was developed as well. A stepping motor with a reduction gear set was used to rotate the shaft of steering wheel. Results: Test trials for U-turning and row-following modes were done in a paddy field after some parameters have been tuned at the ground speed range of 0.3 ~ 1.2 m/s. The minimum RMS error of offset was 3.13 cm at the ground speed of 0.3 m/s while the maximum RMS error was 13.01 cm at 1.2 m/s. The offset RMS error tended to increase as the ground speed increased. The target point distance, LT also affected the system performance and PID controller parameters should be adjusted on different ground speeds. Conclusions: A target angle-based PID controller plus stationary steering angle controller made it possible for the rice-transplanter to steer autonomously by following a reference line accurately and even on U-turning mode. However, as condition in paddy fields is very complicated, the system should control the ground speed that prevents it from deviating too much due to ditch and slope.

This paper deals with experimental evaluation methods for high speed judder on the brake-caliper system. Firstly, two types of brake caliper systems due to the wheel vibration was evaluated. Secondly, the high-speed judder of the brake was also investigated using the subjective rating evaluation in the high-speed road test. These experimental evaluations were carried out by changing the materials of brake pad and the specifications of the brake-corner module. Based upon the test results, a new specification of the brake pad, $15{\times}5$ vertical chamfer, was proposed. The new brake pad showed 3 points, 60 %, improvement in the subjective-rating evaluation comparing with conventional one. Besides, we need to decide properly with judder characteristic of pad material and have to carefully take into consideration other design parameters; caliper, disc, and the braking performance, durability, squeal noise.

For automated guidance control of a magnetically guided-all wheel steered vehicle, it is necessary to have information about position and orientation of the vehicle, and deviations from the reference path in real time. The magnet reference system considered here consists of three magnetic sensors mounted on the vehicle and magnetic markers, which are non-equidistantly buried in the road. This paper presents an observer to estimate such position and orientation at the center of gravity of the vehicle. This algorithm is based on the simple kinematic model of vehicle and uses the data of wheel velocity, steering angle, and the discrete measurements of marker positions. Since this algorithm requires the exact values of initial states, we have also proposed an algorithm of determining the initial position and orientation from the 16 successive magnet pole data, which are given by the magnetic measurement system(MMS). The proposed algorithm is capable of continuing to estimate for the case that the magnetic sensor fail to measure up to three successive magnets. It is shown through experimental data that the proposed algorithm works well within permissible error range.

This paper presents a control method of a mecanum wheel-based omni-directional electric board using driver weight shift. Instead of a steering device such as a joystick or a remote controller, 3 degree-of-freedom driving command for translational and rotational motion of the omni-directional electric board is generated from position of center of gravity measured from weight distribution. The weight shifting motion is not only a driving command but also an intuitive motion to overcome inertial forces. The overall control structure is presented with experimental results to prove validity of the proposed method.
Dynamic equations of motion for the interaction system of bridge and vehicle are derived to investigate the dynamic responses of bridge and vehicles induced by moving automated guide-way transit(AGT) vehicle and surface roughness of bridge. The vehicle model for ACT vehicle is idealized as 11 DOF including yawing, lateral translation and steering of wheels, and the bridges are modeled with finite element method. The AGT vehicle model was verified by experimental study. Parametric studies are carried out to investigate the effect of vehicle speed, surface roughness, stiffness and damping of the suspension system, AGT vehicles and dynamic wheel loads of the AGT vehicles. From the parametric study it can be seen that the dynamic incremental factor of the bridge and dynamic responses of vehicles have a tendency to increase with vehicle speeds, surface roughness and the stiffness of AGT vehicle suspension system. On the other hand those dynamic wheel loads have tendencies to decrease in according to increase of damping of the suspension system.
This paper proposes a traction control system (TCS) that uses a sliding mode wheel slip controller and a PID throttle valve controller. In addition, a yaw motion controller (YMC) is also developed to improve lateral stability using a PID rear wheel steering angle controller. The dynamics of a vehicle and characteristics of the controllers are validated using a proposed full-car model. A driver model is also designed to steer the vehicle during maneuvers on a split ${\mu}$ road and double lane change maneuver. The simulation results show that the proposed full-car model is sufficient to predict vehicle responses accurately. The developed TCS provides improved acceleration performances on uniform slippery roads and split ${\mu}$ roads. When the vehicle is cornering and accelerating with the brake or engine TCS, understeer occurs. An integrated TCS eliminates these problems. The YMC with the integrated TCS improved the lateral stability and controllability of the vehicle.
Brake judder{or cold judder) caused by the disc thickness variation(DTV) is investigated experimentally, This cold judder is often perceived by steering wheel vibration, brake pedal pulsation, and vehicle body vibration. In this paper, how the DTV profile affects the vibration characteristics of vehicle body is shown by order tracking analysis(OTA) and operational vibration analysis(OVA) The tri-axial vibrations are measured at the knuckle, lower rm, and the body side of the lower arm. Also, measured are the wheel speed and the detail DTV profile. The interpretations of OTA results in three directions of tested vehicle indicate the relative importance in the contribution of the run-out and the DTV to the judder vibration. Also, the OVA results show the prominent vibration amplitude of the lower arm in the direction of the vehicle movement. in which the second order of wheel speed is dominant. These results could be used to diagnose the judder problem and to establish the correction methods.

This paper describes a new concept of the robot that can climb on the vertical plane. The engineering design problem of the main structure is presented and the experimental results regarding a new mechanism of climbing on the vertical wall are discussed. The locomotive motion of the robot is realized by using a series chain of two caterpillar wheels on which 24-suction pads are installed. White each caterpillar wheel rotates on the vertical plane surface, the vacuum pads are activated in sequence based on the sequential opening by specially designed mechanical valves. The detail design feature of the valve is also described in this paper. The overall size of the robot is around 460 mm in width and length, respectively, and 200 mm in height. Its mass is slightly over 14 kg. The main mechanical structure of the robot consists of driving motors, vacuum caterpillar system, steering part, vacuum pump and battery. The performance of the robot is verified on the vertical wall.
This paper presents the design of embedded electrical power control unit for Personal Electrical Vehicle(PEV). The embedded unit is designed using PIC18F8720 processor, 16Mb flash ROM, 32Mb SDRAM and signal condition circuits. The proposed PEV consists of 4KW in-wheel Brushless DC Motor(BLDCM), 3 phase voltage source inverter with the $180^{\circ}$ conduction space vector PWM method, PID speed controller and the embedded control unit. The PEV has mechanical manufacture of inverse 3 wheel system, which is applied by the in-wheel BLDCM and steering mechanism with tilting function. Also, the performances of the proposed embedded electrical power control unit are verified through the lab experiment and road driving test of PEV.
Control moment gyro (CMG) employed as satellite actuators, generates a large torque through the steering of its gimbals. Although each gimbal holds a high-speed rotating wheel, the wheel imbalances induces disturbance and degrades the satellite control quality. Therefore, the disturbances ought to be detected and identified as a precaution against actuator faults. Among the method used in detecting disturbances is the state observers. In this paper, we apply a continuous second order sliding mode observer to detect single disturbances/faults in CMGs. Verification of the algorithm is also done on the hardware satellite simulator where four CMGs are installed.
