  • An optimal control procedure is presented for steering of an unmanned cart which has two motored wheels on its left and right side. Steering, running and stopping are enabled by controlling the motor speed independently. An optimal proportional-plus-integral control is employed to eliminate steady state error which is sustained by a simple proportional control for tracking a circular arc path. A simple and readily-implemented suboptimal control is also examined. The suboptimal control gives comparable performance and therefore provides an effective approach for industrial application of the unmanned cart. Effects of design parameters of unmanned cart such as forward velocity, wheel radius and position of sensor are investigated. It is shown that within the practicable values of the parameters the controlled performance improves rapidly with increase of those parameters then the improvement becomes negligible, which suggests base values over which the parameters should be taken.

  • Since most autonomous mobile robots are powered by a battery, it is important to increase the continuous operating time without recharging. This can be achieved by improving the energy efficiency of a mobile robot, but little research on energy efficiency has been performed. This paper proposes two methods for improving the energy efficiency of an omnidirectional mobile robot.. One method is to realize a continuously variable transmission (CVT) by adopting the mechanism of steerable omnidirectional wheels. The other is the proposed steering algorithm in which wheel arrangement of the mobile robot is continuously adjusted so as to obtain the maximum energy efficiency of the motors during navigation. In addition, new omnidirectional wheels which can be transformed to the conventional wheels depending on the driving conditions are proposed to compensate for less efficient omnidirectional drive mode. Various tests show that motion control of the OMR-SOW works satisfactorily and the proposed steering algorithm for CVT can provide higher energy efficiency than the algorithm using a fixed steering angle. In addition, it is shown that the differential drive mode can give better energy efficiency than the omnidirectional drive mode.

  • This paper addresses an algorithm of path planning for autonomous driving of a ground vehicle in waypoint navigation. The proposed algorithm is flexible in utilization under a large GPS positioning error and generates collision-free multiple paths while pursuing minimum traveling time. An optimal path reduces inefficient steering by minimizing lateral changes in generated waypoints along a path. Simulation results compare the proposed algorithm with the A* algorithm by manipulation of the steering wheel and traveling time, and show that the proposed algorithm realizes real-time obstacle avoidance by quick processing of path generation, and minimum time traveling by producing paths with small lateral changes while overcoming the very irregular positioning error from the GPS.

  • This paper deals with the indoor localization problem for a SSMR (Skid Steering Mobile Robot) subjected to wheel-ground friction and with one LRF (Laser Range Finder). In order to compensate for some friction effect, a friction related coefficient is estimated by the recursive least square algorithm and appended to the maneuvering command. Also to reduce odometric information based localization errors, the lines are extracted with scan points of LRF and matched with the ones of the corresponding map built in advance. The present friction compensation and scan map matching schemes have been applied to a laboratory SSMR, and experimental results are given to validate the localization performance along an indoor corridor.

  • As many systems depend on electronics, concern for fault tolerance is growing rapidly. For example, a car with its steering controlled by electronics and no mechanical linkage from steering wheel to front tires(steer-by-wire) should be fault tolerant because a failure can come without any warning and its effect is devastating. In order to make system fault tolerant, there has been a body of research mainly from aerospace field. This paper presents the structure of predictive smoothing voter that can filter out most erroneous values and noise. In addition, several numerical simulation results are given where the predictive smoothing voter outperforms well-known average and median voters.

  • This research has been performed to reveal the hysteresis phenomena of the hunting motion in a railway passenger cars. It is found that there are some factors and its operation region to make the nonlinear critical speed reacts to them more sensitively than the linear critical speed. The simulation results show that a self steering bogie system can be a substitute proposal to improve curving Performance together with the reduction of hysteresis of critical speed. Full scale roller rig test is carried out for the validation of the numerical results. Finally, it is certified that wear of wheel profile and stiffness discontinuities of wheelset suspension caused by deterioration have to be considered in the analysis to predict the hysteresis of critical speed precisely.

  • Noncontactable joystick for a low speed electric vehicle(LSEV) is developed. The joystick is proposed to replaced the steering wheel in a conventional LSEV. The main advantages of the proposed joystick are a durable and a stable in structure, simple and easy to control through discriminating the driving and braking area. To reduce error and stability in the joystick control, input and output signal of the joystick are manipulated by data averaging and differntiation. With this algorithm, the driving resolution and capability are improved. To verify the proposed algorithm, a simple prototype model which has two electric motors for propulsion and steering are used. Test results show that the prototype joystick control system is applicable to an LSEV dirve.

  • This paper deals with an estimation method for sideslip angle by using an unknown disturbance observation technique in 4WS passenger car systems. Firstly, a 4WS vehicle model with 3DOF is derived under the constant velocity and same tyres properties. The vehicle dynamics is transformed into the linear state space model with considering the external disturbances. Secondly, and unknown disturbance observer is introduced and its property which estimating the states of system without any disturbance information is shown. Lastly, the estimated sideslip angle of the 4WS vehicle system is verified through numerical simulation.

  • In this paper, we get state equations based on wheel's rotation, tilt and steering are independent each other in balancing robot. Accordingly, we propose two LQR controllers which are appropriate for rotation and steering control of a balancing robot. And its superiority and appropriateness are demonstrated by a comparison to a PID method. Simulation results verify the possibility of upright balancing, rectilinear motion and position control. Moreover, experimental results show that it guarantees the performance to apply the two LQR controllers to balance the robot.
