Retrofitted built-up steel angle members for enhancing bearing capacity of latticed towers: Experiment

  • Many existing transmission or communication towers designed several decades ago have undergone nonreversible performance degradation, making it hardly meet the additional requirements from upgrades in wind load design codes and extra services of electricity and communication. Therefore, a new-type non-destructive reinforcement method was proposed to reduce the on-site operation of drilling and welding for improving the quality and efficiency of reinforcement. Six built-up steel angle members were tested under compression to examine the reinforcement performance. Subsequently, the cyclic loading test was conducted on a pair of steel angle tower sub-structures to investigate the reinforcement effect, and a simplified prediction method was finally established for calculating the buckling bearing capacity of those new-type retrofitted built-up steel angles. The results indicates that: no apparent difference exists in the initial stiffness for the built-up specimens compared to the unreinforced steel angles; retrofitting the steel angles by single-bolt clamps can guarantee a relatively reasonable reinforcement effect and is suggested for the reduced additional weight and higher construction efficiency; for the substructure test, the latticed substructure retrofitted by the proposed reinforcement method significantly improves the lateral stiffness, the non-deformability and energy dissipation capacity; moreover, an apparent pinching behavior exists in the hysteretic loops, and there is no obvious yield plateau in the skeleton curves; finally, the accuracy validation result indicates that the proposed theoretical model achieves a reasonable agreement with the test results. Accordingly, this study can provide valuable references for the design and application of the non-destructive upgrading project of steel angle towers.

A study on the slag-thickness measuring system for steel making foundaries by using a resistivity detector. (저항센서를 이용한 제강용 슬래그 두께측정 방안 연구)

  • In order to measure the thickness of the slag layer on the molten metal in the melting vessels for steel making foundaries, we manufactured the slag-thickness measuring system consisting of the probe and its driving system, which is based on the principle of detecting the change in the electrical resistivity. Experimental results show that there is a very wide difference of the electrical resistivity by the order of about $10^3$ between the molten metal and the hot slag and, hence, the air/slag and slag/molten metal interface can be exactly detected with the use of the probe which can be moved toward the melt. Therefore, it can be concluded that the proposed scheme of the slag measurement system in this study is Proven to be excellent in its efficiency and accuracy.

Case Study on Integrated In-line Oil Monitoring Sensor for Machine Condition Monitoring of Steel Making Industry (통합형 인-라인 오일 모니터링 센서의 제철설비 현장 적용사례)

  • One of the important trends for condition monitoring in the 21st century is the development of smart sensors that will permit the cost-effective continuous monitoring of key machine equipments. In this study, an integrated in-line oil monitoring sensor assigned for continuous in situ monitoring multiple parameters of oil performance is presented. The sensor estimates oil deterioration based on the information about chemical degradation, total contamination, water content of oil and oil temperature. The oil oxidation is estimated by "chromatic ratio", total contamination is measured by the changes in optical density of oil in three optical wave-bands ('Red', 'Green' and 'Blue') and water content is evaluated as relative saturation of oil by water. In order to evaluate the sensor's effectiveness, the sensor was applied to several used oil samples in steel making industry and the results were compared with those measured by standard test methods.

Evaluation of Defect Types for Characteristic Database Construction of Large Sewage Box Culverts (대형 하수박스암거의 속성 데이터베이스 구축을 위한 결함유형 평가)

  • As the 3D laser scanning technology capable of databaseing large sewage box culverts becomes possible, it is necessary to develop a standardization manual that can clearly distinguish the structural and operational defect types of box culver and analyze the defect data. In this study, we collected and analyzed defects in sewage box culverts of 14,827m in total by selecting three districts in Korea. The major defects were surface damages, and their defect densities were $2.17m^2/m$, $0.27m^2/m$ and $0.10m^2/m$ for aggregate exposure, Steel reinforcement exposure, and Steel reinforcement projecting. In order to support the decision of the box culverment management, it was divided into five grades and each defect code and defect score were allocated. The results of this study are useful for the diagnosis of the sewage box culverts in Korea and it is expected to support a decision making for management.

A Study on the Application Method of Flexible Pipe for District Heating in Korea (지역난방용 Flexible Pipe 활용방안 연구)

  • The concept of district heating involves centralised heat production where heat is distributed to consumer via a piping network. The objective of this work is to identify the Flexible Pipe from an economy, execution, maintenance point of view. Flexible Pipe has in some countries, especially in Europe, been used for many years in district heating. In spite of years of experience, there still exist doubts about the possibilities of using flexible pipes in district heating applications, mostly because of no experiences in domestic market. The advantage of flexible pipe systems is their flexibility. This holds not only for the inner pipe but also for the total pipe system including insulation and jacket. Even for the largest diameter the minimum radius of curvature is given to 1.5m. The most important difference between flexible pipe systems and preinsulated steel pipes is their simple and quick assembly. Such information could provide a basis for making reasonable hypotheses about consumer preferences, to foam a basis for making future marketing more effective.

  • Reinforcing steel work plays an important role in terms of its structural performance or weight of construction cost for reinforced concrete structures. Precise estimation of re-bar quantity gives a basis for managing the reinforcing steel work effectively. However, the estimation process is still performed ineffectively based upon the expert's experience or manpower in spite of the advanced technology or improvement efforts. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to develop a prototype system for taking-off the quantity of reinforcing steel bars quickly and accurately in an order consistent with the specific members identified on the drawings. An estimate algorithm considering the connection, settlement and coating thickness of re-bars was suggested regarding to their replacement conditions which places more emphasis on constructibility. Also, this system produces the shop drawings automatically with the calculation results with work zone information.

A Ship Scheduling Model for Raw Material Transportation with Yard Storage Constraints in a Steel Mill (재고수준을 고려한 제철원료 수송을 위한 선박 일정계획 수립 모형)

  • A ship scheduling model is presented for the raw material transportation problem with yard storage constraints in a steel mill. The problem is formulated as 0, 1 mixed integer programming considering such constraints as loading port conditions, ship size and hold capacity, unloading conditions, and yard storage space. In addition, inventory related constraints including safety stock are taken into consideration to support the continuous operations of steel making process. The proposed model has been implemented and applied successfully to a real world problem, and its results show the improvement of performance compared to the traditional method. For example, the arrival dates of ships are determined satisfying the constraints. The total inventory level is minimized at the stock yard as a result. Also, the safety inventory level is always kept at the planning stage, and the standard deviation of total inventory level is reduced significantly. Further research is expected to develop efficient heuristics to have a better response time for even larger scale problems.
