  • A study on the progressive inelastic deformation behavior of the 316 L stainless steel cylindrical structure with plate-to-shell junction under moving temperature front was carried out by structural test and analysis. The structural test intends to simulate the thermal ratcheting behavior occurring at the reactor baffle of the liquid metal reactor as free surface of hot sodium pool moves up and down under plant transients. The thermal ratchet load that heats the specimen up to 550$^{\circ}C$ was applied repeatedly and residual deformation was measured. The thermal ratcheting test was carried out with two types of cylindrical structures, one with plate to-shell junction and the other without the junction to investigate the effects of the geometric discontinuities on the global ratcheting deformation. The temperature distributions of the test specimens were measured and were used for the ratcheting analysis. The ratchet deformations were analyzed with the constitutive equation of the non-linear combined hardening model. The analysis results were in good agreement with those of the structural tests.

  • It has been widely reported that carbide-free bainitic steels or super-bainite WP (SB-TRIP) steels for the automotive industry are a new family of steels offering a unique combination of high strength and ductility. Hence, it is important to exactly evaluate the volume fraction of RA and to identify the 3-D morphology of constituent phases, because it plays a crucial role in mechanical properties. Recently, as electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) equipped with focused ion beam (FIB) has been developed, 3-D EBSD technique for materials science are used to these steels. Moreover, newly developed atom probe tomography (APT) technique can provide the exact distribution and chemical concentration of alloying elements in a sub-nm scale. The APT analysis results indicate exactly the distribution and composition of alloying elements in the austenite and bainite phases of SB-TRIP steels with the atomic-scale resolution. And thus, no partitioning of aluminum and manganese atoms was showed between the austenite containing $7.73{\pm}0.39$ at% C and the bainitic ferrite associated with $0.22{\pm}0.06$ at% C in the SB-TRIP steel.

  • Hardenability and mechanical properties of boron-bearing steels containing C, Mo and Cr were investigated in this study. Using quench dilatometer, the steel specimens were cooled down to room temperature at different cooling rates to construct continuous cooling transformation diagrams and then the transformation products from austenite were examined. A critical cooling rate was introduced as an index to quantitatively evaluate the hardenability. The C addition to boron-bearing steels did not significantly affect hardenability compared to boron-free steels although it increases the hardenability. With the same content, the Mo addition largely increased the hardenability of boron-bearing steels than the Cr addition because it decreased both the transformation start and finish temperatures at low cooling rates. In particular, the Mo addition completely suppressed the formation of eutectoid ferrite even at the slow cooling rate of $0.2^{\circ}C/s$, whereas the Cr addition nearly suppressed it at the cooling rates above $3^{\circ}C/s$.

  • Rigorous FE(Finite Element) analyses of the cable-stayed bridge with steel-box girder, the main construction method of which is FCM (Free Cantilever Method), are presented in this paper. The analysis and the checking of design for a derrick crane under several loading conditions are performed using the software MIDAS/Civil and the beam elements are used to model the main structure. Among all the construction stages, special construction stages are chosen and considered to ensure the safety of segments of box girder The stress analysis for lifting of a segment of box girder is performed using the software SAP2000 and the shell elements of which having 6 DOF(Degrees Of Freedom) per nodes are successfully used to model the segment of box girder for the purpose of capturing the detailed behaviors on the folded-plates in the segment. Finally, concluding remarks are given to improve a design of the derrick crane and the segment based on the results from this study.

  • The Ti-Si-N coating layers were synthesized on SKD 11 steel substrate by a DC reactive magnetron co-sputtering technique with separate Ti and Si targets. The high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses for the coating layers revealed that microstructure of Ti-Si-N layer was nanocomposite, consisting of nano-sized TiN crystallites surrounded by amorphous $Si_3$$N_4$ phase. The highest hardness value of about 39 GPa was obtained at the Si content of ~11at.%, where the microstructure had fine TiN crystallites (about 5nm in size) dispersed uniformly in amorphous matrix. As the Si content in Ti-Si-N films increased, the TiN crystallites became from aligned to randomly oriented microstructure, finer, and fully penetrated by amorphous phase. Free Si appeared in the layers due to the deficit of nitrogen source at higher Si content. Friction coefficient and wear rate of the Ti-Si-N coating layer significantly decreased with increase of relative humidity. The self-lubricating tribe-layers such as $SiO_2$ or (OH)$Si_2$ seemed to play an important role in the wear behavior of Ti-Si-N film against steel.

  • This paper investigates critical loads of tapered cantilever columns with a tip mass, subjected to a follower force. The linearly tapered solid rectangular cross-sections are adopted as the column taper. The differential equation governing free vibrations of such columns, also called Beck's columns, is derived using the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. Both divergence and flutter critical loads are calculated from the load-frequency curves that are obtained by solving the differential equation. The critical loads are presented as functions of various non-dimensional system parameters, namely, the taper type, the subtangential parameter, and the mass ratio.

  • Shrink fitting which is assembling process to fix stator core on the motor frame is widely used at the mass production line of motors because of cost and productivity. This process produces compressive stress on a stator core, which causes negative effect for example, core and copper losses on motor performance. Magnetic properties of electrical steel are effected by both compressive and tensile and thermal stresses. Electromagnetic field analysis is considered one of the effective process since one can predict motor performance including core loss precisely. This method can consider non linear magnetic property with magnetic saturation which is typical electrical steel behavior. However this method is strongly depended on non linear magnetic data, one may have different calculation result whether considering mechanical stress or not. This study describes magnetic field analysis of a motor considering mechanical stress from shrink fitting. Analysis results are compared with each stress-free and stressed condition.

  • The ratios of elastic to shear modulus of the structures as laminated composite plates and shells, are very large. They are much susceptible to effect of shear deformation. In order to obtain the accurate solutions of laminated composite plate and shells, the effects of shear strain should be considered for the analysis and design of them. Especially, the more exact solution can be obtained in applying to higher-order shear deformation theory. Therefore, in this paper, the third-order shear deformation theory is used to present the distributions of bending, the characteristics of natural frequencies and the buckling load according to the effects of ply orientation, number of layers for the laminated composite plates and shells with simply supported boundary conditions.

  • A novel system identification and structural health assessment procedure of steel framed structures with semi-rigid connections is presented in this paper. It is capable of detecting damages at the local element level under normal operating conditions; i.e., serviceability limit state. The procedure is a linear time-domain system identification technique in which the structure responses are required, whereas the dynamic excitation force is not required to identify the structural parameters. The procedure tracks changes in the stiffness properties of all the elements in a structure. It can identify damage-free and damaged structural elements very accurately when excited by different types of dynamic loadings. The method is elaborated with the help of several numerical examples. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm identified the structures correctly and detected the pre-imposed damages in the frames when excited by earthquake, impact, and harmonic loadings. The algorithm can potentially be used for structural health assessment and monitoring of existing structures with minimum disruption of operations. Since the procedure requires only a few time points of response information, it is expected to be economic and efficient.

  • The first Procedure to identify structural system by using measured data is transformation of data to frequency domain and try to recognize modal characteristics in graphical condition. Those methods are doubted about the reliability to the civil structures, especially bridges which has coupled and close modal characteristics. In this paper, feasibility of time domain modal Identification methods were examined and applied double least square method to overcome bias characteristics of the identification methods. To show the advantage of proposed method, simulation were carried out for mass-spring model. And to examine the usage of the method in realistic case, sensitivity of the methods to noise was performed.
