Stress-Strain Curve of Concrete Confined with both Steel Ties and FRP Composites (복합재료에 의하여 구속된 콘크리트의 응력-변형률 곡선 예측)

  • In recent years, the use of FRP composites to repair and strengthen existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures has been widely used. When the columns of existing RC structures are wrapped with FRP composites, the core concrete of such columns is confined not only by the FRP composites but also by the existing steel reinforcing ties (or spirals). Therefore, it is necessary to understand correctly the compressive response of concrete confined with both steel spirals and FRP composites in order to predict the behavior of such RC columns. This paper proposes a model to predict the compressive stress-strain curves of concrete confined with FRP and steel reinforcing ties.

Behavior of Circular Concrete Cylinders Confined with Both Steel Spirals and Fiber Composites (나선형 철근 및 섬유에 의하여 동시에 구속된 원형 콘크리트 실린더의 거동)

  • When the columns of existing RC structures are repaired with FRP composites, the core concrete of the columns is confined by both materials of steel spirals (or steel hoops) and FRP composites because the FRP composites wrap the existing columns which have been already confined with steel spirals or hoops. As the stress-strain curves of steel and fiber are different to each other, the behavior of concrete columns confined with both steel spiral and FRP composites is also different to that of concrete columns confined with only steel spiral or FRP composites. Twenty four RC cylinders were tested in order to observe the behavior of RC cylinders confined with both materials. The observed results of the test showed that the behavior of the test cylinders confined with both materials was quite different to that of cylinders confined with only one material.

  • Through extensive research, there exist a new type of connection between railway bridge girders and steel-concrete composite panels. In addition to conventional shear connectors, newly developed blind bolts have been recently adopted for retrofitting. However, the body of knowledge on their influence and application to railway structures has not been thoroughly investigated. This study has thus placed a particular emphasis on the application of blind bolts on the Sydney Harbour Bridge as a feasible alternative constituent of railway track upgrading. Finite element modeling has been used to simulate the behaviours of the precast steel-concrete panels with common types of bolt connection using commercially available package, ABAQUS. The steel-concrete composite track slabs have been designed in accordance with Australian Standards AS5100. These precast steel-concrete panels are then numerically retrofitted by three types of most practical bold connections: head studded shear connector, Ajax blind bolt and Lindapter hollow bolt. The influences of bolt connections on load and stress transfers and structural behaviour of the composite track slabs are highlighted in this paper. The numerical results exhibit that all three bolts can distribute stresses effectively and can be installed on the bridge girder. However, it is also found that Lindapter hollow bolts are superior in minimising structural responses of the composite track slabs to train loading.

  • This paper discusses the role of micro and macrofibers in the workability, compressive strength, and failure of cementitious composites. Workability(flow), compressive strength, splitting strength and fracture mechanism of hybrid fiber reinforced cement composites(HFRCC) have been investigated by means of Korean Standard (KS). The specific blend pursued in this investigation is a combination of polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) and steel cord. It was demonstrated that a hybrid combination of steel and PVA enhances fiber dispersion compared to only steel cord reinforced cement composites and that the brittle and wide cracking was much reduced in HFRCC as expected because in the matrix containing the PVA fiber around the steel cord, a multiple microcracking occurred and the steel cord could sufficiently work for bridging the cracked surface.

  • Results of an experimental study on the manufacture, the workability and mechanical properties of steel fiber reinforced polyester resin composites utilizing industrial waste products are presented in this paper. The fly ash polyester resin composites using steel fiber, fly ash and calcium carbonic acid (CaCo3), unsaturated polyester resin, styrene monomer, cobalt octate and methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, fine and coarse aggregates are prepared with various filler~binder rations, binder rates and mixing conditions. As a test results, the workability of steel fiber reinforced polyester resin composites are considerably dropped with increasing fly ash-binder ratio and steel fiber volume. And compressive, flexural strength and bending toughness of the composites are remarkably improved with augmenting fiber contents.

  • In this study, it is investigate to influence on tile dispersion of fiber and the flowability of matrix of type and amount of superplasticizer, velocity agent, mineral admixture and steel fiber to improve for construction performance of steel fiber reinforced cementitious composites. As for the test results, it was found that the dispersion of fiber and the flowability of matrix in steel fiber reinforced cementitious composites can improve by using of properly amount and combination of superplasticizer, velocity agent, mineral admixture. Furthermore, It show that the aspect ratio of steel fiber affect the construction performance of fiber reinforced cementitious composites, and the improvement for construction performance is the more effective the smaller aspect ration of steel fiber.

  • Composite materials are effective in forming externally bonded reinforcements which find applications related to existing structures repair, attributed to their high strength-to-weight ratio and ease of installation. Among various composites, fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) have somewhat been largely accepted as a commonly utilized composite for such purposes. It is only recently that steel fibres have been considered as additional members of the FRP fibre family, intuitively termed as steel reinforced polymer (SRP). Owing to its low cost and permissibility of fibre bending at sharp corners, SRP is rapidly becoming a viable contender to other FRP systems. This paper investigates the bond behaviour of SRP-concrete joints with different bonded lengths (50, 75, 100, 150 and 300 mm) and widths (15, 30, 40, 50, and 75 mm) using single-lap shear tests. The experimental specimens contain SRP strips with a fixed density of steel fibres (0.472 cords/mm) bonded to the face of concrete prisms. The load responses were obtained and compared in terms of corresponding load and slip boundaries of the constant region and the peak loads. The failure modes of SRP composites are discussed, and the range of effective bonded length is evaluated herein. In the end, a new analytical model was proposed to estimate the SRP-concrete bond strength using a genetic algorithm, which outperforms 22 existing FRP-concrete bond strength models.

  • To recycle the steel slag as manufactured composite materials of polymer concretes, we used the atomizing method to make round aggregates from steel slag, which is treated as industrial wastes. A round rapid-cooled steel slag was used to replace fine aggregate (river sand) or coarse aggregate (crushed aggregate), depending on the grain size. To examine general physical properties of polymer concrete composites manufactured from rapid-cooled steel slag, the polymer concrete specimen with various proportions depending on the addition ratio of polymer binder and replacement ratio of rapid-cooled steel slag were manufactured. In the result of the tests, the mechanical strength of the specimen made by replacing the optimum amount of rapid-cooled steel slag increased notably (maximum compressive strength 117.1 MPa), and the use of polymer binder, which had the most impact on the production cost of polymer concrete composites, could be remarkably reduced. However, the mechanical strength of the specimen was markedly reduced in hot water resistance test of polymer concrete composite.

  • This paper concerns the flexural capacity of reinforced concrete beams with ultra-high performance cementitious composites(UHPCC). It was investigated if the existing equations to estimate the flexural capacity of reinforced fiberous concrete beams are applicable with the experiments including lightly reinforced concrete beams. The reinforcing effect when the steel fiber reinforced concrete was used in beams was also estimated. The results showed that the equation to predict the flexural capacity of reinforced steel fiber concrete by ACI 544 committee didn't have a good agreement with the test results and underestimated the flexural capacity in especially lightly reinforced beams with under 1.5% reinforcement ratio. the enhancement of flexural capacity was quite considerable in lightly reinforced beams when the steel fiber reinforced concrete was used. A equation to predict the reinforcing effect of steel fiber in reinforced steel fiber beams was developed. the equation was proposed as a function of both the characteristics of steel fiber and reinforcement ratio.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure the electrical conductivity of cementitious composites as an early step to obtain shielding performance by mixing various type of steel fiber into cementitious composites, the main building material of protection facility, to shield electromagnetic pulse (EMP) damage. Fiber such as conductors as amorphous metallic fiber, hooked steel fiber, and smooth steel fiber are mixed into cementitious composites to give electrical conductivity and measure the impedance of concrete using LCR meter. By doing this, the electrical conductivity of each type of steel fiber reinforced cementitious composites (FRCC) is compared.
