  • The steel pipe of steel-concrete composite piles increases the pile strength and induces the ductile failure by constraining the deformation of the inner concrete. In this research, the load-movement relations and the reinforcement effect by the outer steel pipe in the steel-concrete composite pile were analyzed by performing three-dimensional numerical analyses, which can simulate the yielding behavior of pile material and the elasto-plastic behavior of soils. The parameters analyzed in the study include three pile materials of steel, concrete and composite, pile diameter, pile distance and loading direction. As the results, the axial capacity of the composite pile was about 73% larger than that of the steel pipe pile and about 14% larger than that of the concrete pile. In addition, the horizontal movement at the pile head of the composite pile was about 51% of that of the steel pile and about 19% of that of the concrete pile.

As the results, the axial capacity of the composite pile was 1.9 times larger than that of the steel pipe pile and similar with that of the concrete pile. At the allowable movement criteria, the horizontal capacity of the composite pile was 1.46 times larger than that of the steel pile and 1.25 times larger than that of the concrete pile. In addition, the horizontal movement at the pile head of the composite pile was about 78% of that of the steel pile and about 53% of that of the concrete pile, which showed that the movement reduction effect of the composite pile was significant and enables the economical design of drilled shafts.

  • The steel pipe of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts increases the pile strength and induces the ductile failure by constraining the deformation of the inner concrete. In this research, pile loading tests were performed to analyze the field applicability of a steel-concrete composite drilled shafts. The test ground consisted of 5~7 m thick soil underlying rock mass. The test piles consisted of two steel-concrete composite drilled shafts, which were the concrete filled steel pipe piles with the diameter of 0.508 m, and a concrete pile with the same diameter. The test results showed that the boundary between the upper steel composite section and the lower concrete section was structurally weak and needs to be reinforced by using a inner steel cage. If the boundary is located in deep depth, which is not influenced by lateral load, the allowable strength of the lower concrete section increases, so an economical design can be performed by increasing the design load of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts.

  • Composite piles have been used in ground conditions where conventional piles are unsuitable or uneconomical. They may consist of a combination of timber and concrete pile in Europe. One method of doing this was to drive a steel tube to just below water level, and a concrete pile was lowered down it and driven to the required level where corrosion was susceptible in U.K. Recently, a fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite pile was developed to use in many marine locations for piers and waterfront buildings in the USA(Hoy, 1995; Phair, 1997). A steel composite (SC) pile reinforced concrete spun pile with steel tube was also proposed and used for the foundation acting a high lateral earthquake load. Composite piles have been developed and researched to increase lateral resistance or to prevent corrosion in marine structures. In paper, the composite pile consisting of the steel upper portion and the concrete lower portion is proposed and are carried out several tests to confirm the capacity of the pile such as lateral load test, dynamic load tests and bending test. It is noted that the composite pile would be a economical pile being capable of increasing lateral resistance.

  • Steel casing used to keep a borehole wall in the construction of drilled shaft increases the vertical and lateral stiffness and strength of pile, but it is usually pulled out or ignored due to the absence of standard or the problem of erosion of steel casing. In order to make use of steel casing as a permanent structure, this study carried out an experimental work for the steel-concrete composite pile. Four types of piles were used to estimate the lateral behavior of piles, which are reinforced concrete pile, steel pile and steel-concrete composite pile with and without reinforcing bar. The subgrade-reaction spring system was developed to simulate the lateral stiffness of soil in laboratory. Also, the composite loading system which can apply the axial and lateral load simultaneously was employed.

  • This paper presents full scale model tests on the various types of model piles carried out to estimate the behavior of laterally loaded steel-concrete composite piles. Subgrade-reaction spring system was developed to simulate the reaction of ground in laboratory condition. In addition, lateral behavior of piles under working load condition was estimated using composite loading system, which is available for independent loading in vertical and horizontal direction. Steel-concrete composite piles showed higher efficiency in lateral resistance rather than drilled shaft made of reinforced concrete. The lateral resistance of composite pile was larger than the summation of steel pile and concrete pile due to the composite effect by steel casing. The effect of shear key or strength of concrete on the behavior of composite pile was examined. The substitution of reinforcing bar by steel casing was also investigated.

  • Generally, application of steel pile as deep foundation member needs specials requirement for the connection method between steel pipe and concrete footing. To investigate real compressive behavior of connection member between steel pipe pile and concrete footing, three specimens were tested with carefully designed experimental system. Main test variable is the connection method between steel pipe pile and concrete footing. The bolted bonding method and hook bonding method was considered as the connection method in this study. From the test results gained from experiment, it was conformed that two types of connection method have the almost same compressive resistance capacity. Therefore, we can conclude that these two connection methods can be used as the strengthening method to verify the compressive composite action of concrete and steel pipe pile.

  • Various model piles with different sections such as reinforced concrete, steel, steel-concrete composite without rebar and steel-concrete composite with rebar were made, and vertical load test was conducted using a large scaled UTM(Universal Test Machine) to evaluate Young's modulus and ultimate load of the model piles. Based on the tests, ultimate load of steel-concrete composite pile is 31% greater than the sum of it of reinforced concrete pile and it of steel pile. This is caused that ultimate load and Young's modulus of inner concrete increase due to confining effect by outer steel casing. Variation of ultimate load is also insignificant depending on the ratio of length to diameter(L/D), therefore bucking has not an effect on change of ultimate load in case of the L/D below 10.
