Evaluation of Effects on Impact Resonance Test for Determining Modulus of Asphalt Concrete (아스팔트 콘크리트 탄성계수 결정을 위한 충격공진시험 영향요소 평가)

  • The stiffness of the asphalt concrete is represented by the complex modulus $E^*$, which is very important properties in the mechanistic design of flexible pavement system. The moduli of asphalt concrete were generally determined by dynamic modulus test. However, the dynamic modulus testing method is too complex, expensive, and time consuming to be applicable on a production basis. The IR(Impact Resonance) method has been shown to be a truly simple nondestructive testing method which produces very repetitive, consistent results. The major object of this study was to estimate of the effects on IR tests for determining modulus of asphalt concrete including impact position, specimen support condition, impact steel ball size and sampling rate. The variations of IR test results with various testing conditions are within ${\pm}2.7%$.

  • Recently, offshore wind farms are increasingly expected, because there are huge resource and large site in offshore. Jeju island has optimum condition for constructing a wind energy farm. Unlike the mainland, Jeju island has stratified structure distribution between rock layers sediments due to volcanic activation. In these case, it can be occur engineering problems in whole structures as well as the safety of foundation as the thickness and distribution of sediment under top rock layer can not support sufficiently the structure. In this study, field lateral load test of the pile for analyzing lateral behavior of the offshore wind turbine which is embedded in basalt. After calculating the subgrade resistance and the horizontal deflection from the measured strain to derive p-y curve from the lateral load test results, the subgrade resistance amplifies the error in the process of differentiation and the error of piecewise polynomial curve fitting is the smallest. In order to calculate the horizontal deflection from the measured strain, the six-order polynomial was used.

  • In this paper, a disk-type ultrasonic motor using a combination of radial and bending vibration modes is newly designed and fabricated. The characteristics of the test motor are also measured. By means of traveling elastic wave induced at the surface of circumference of the elastic disk, a steel bar in contact with the surface of circumference of the elastic disk bonded onto the piezoelectric ceramic disks is driven in both directions by changing the sine and cosine voltage inputs. The stator of the motor is composed of two sheets of piezoelectric ceramic disks to bond onto both surfaces of an elastic disk, respectively. As a result, the diameter of the elastic body is increased and the resonant frequency is decreased. The resonant frequency of the stator is about 92 kHz, which is composed with piezoelectric ceramic disks of 28 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness, and an elastic body of 32 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness. A driving voltage of 20 VPP Produces 200 rpm with a torque of 1Nm and an efficiency of about 10%.

Evaluation on Flexural Behavior of Hybrid Beams with Rigid Joint Connecting Steel and Precast Concrete Elements (강재 보-PC 보가 강접합 연결된 하이브리드 보의 휨 거동 평가)

  • A hybrid precast concrete beam system with a simple rigid connection was proposed to compensate the limitations and shortcomings of the conventional bolt connection associated with the H-beams embedded into concrete beams. Three beam specimens with fixed both ends were tested under one-point top cyclic loading to explore the effectiveness of the developed hybrid beam system in transferring externally applied flexure to a column. The main parameter considered was the length ($L_s$) of H-beam, which was selected to be $0.25L_I$, $0.5L_I$, and $1.0L_I$, where $L_I$ is the distance from the support to the point of inflection. All beam specimens showed a better displacement ductility ratio than the reinforced concrete beams with the same longitudinal reinforcement index, indicating that the cyclic load-deflection curve and ductility were insignificantly affected by $L_s$. The continuous strain distribution along the beam length and the prediction of the ultimate load based on the collapse mechanism ascertained the structural adequacy of the developed rigid connection.

  • The structural vehicles are steel members of square or circle tube with definite shape. These members support various components and absorb impact energy to protect passengers during accidentswhen crash happen. Structural members need to be lightweight and stable. In this study, we do an impact simulation of a CFRP square member using finite element analysis program Ls-Dyna in order to predict fracture shape and energy absorb feature of CFRP member. Also, we make square member shape of CFRP and do an impact experiment. We compare the analytical and experimental results and consider the fracture shape and energy features of CFRP members.

  • Many PE (pre-erection) blocks are supported by wooden, concrete, or steel supports when they are stocked in the outdoor areas of a shipyard. Their positions and numbers are planned on the basis of the workers' experience. Recently, many shipyards have been making PE blocks with various shapes and weight distributions because of the variety of ships and building technologies. Therefore, it is now necessary to deal with blocks that they have no experience with. We propose a method to conveniently and quickly evaluate the structural safety of PE block supports, without the need for special knowledge and technology related to structural analysis. This method can reduce the large number of man hours (MH) normally needed for the analysis. The three-dimensional grillage analysis is performed for a simplified grillage model of a PE block. For efficiency, the grillage model of the PE block is automatically built from its three-dimensional CAD model, and its weight is also automatically distributed on the grillage model. The integrated system has been comprehensively implemented to perform the grillage analysis for the reaction forces on block supports. This paper describes how to make a grillage model of a PE block and estimate the weight distribution of the block on this grillage model. These steps are verified by comparing the supports reaction forces to those of the 3D finite element analysis for the PE blocks that are provided by a shipyard.

Optimization for Configuration and Material Cost of Helical Pile Using Harmony Search Algorithm (하모니서치 알고리즘을 이용한 헬리컬 파일의 형상 및 재료비 최적 설계기법에 대한 연구)

  • The helical pile is a manufactured steel pile consisting of one or more helix-shaped bearing plates affixed to a central shaft. This pile is installed by rotating the shaft into the ground to support structural loads. Advantages of the helical pile are no need for boring or grout process, and ability to install a pile foundation with relatively light devices. In this study, an optimized design method for helical piles is proposed to minimize the material cost with consideration of the load bearing capacity obtained by the cylindrical shear method. The harmony search meta-heuristic algorithm was adopted for optimization process. The optimized design was verified by comparing with the 2009 International building code. It is noted that the optimization for the configuration of helical piles along with material cost proves to be an out-performed tool in designing helical pile foundation with economic feasibility.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve productivity by implementing one-pass full penetration welding using laser-arc hybrid welding for AH36. On increasing the thickness of the plate, a higher power of laser and arc was required to obtain full penetration. However, increasing the power of heat source caused undercut defects at both ends of the bead. This undercut was prevented by controlling the parameters of welding voltage and pulse correction. Hardness measurement and tensile test were conducted to apprehend the mechanical properties of weld. Also, by carrying out the microstructure observation for laser and arc regions, microstructural properties were understood.

Application of Impact Resonance Test to the Determination of Elastic Modulus and Damping Ratio of Concrete (콘크리트의 탄성계수 및 감쇠비 결정에 대한 충격공진시험 적용)

  • The moduli of concrete has been determined by various testing methods. The impact resonance (IR) method has been shown to be truly a simple nondestructive testing method which produces consistent results. It is possible to determine not only the modulus but also damping ratio from the IR test. However, the values of elastic modulus and damping ratio of concrete from the test is known to be affected by various test conditions including, specimen support condition, impact steel ball size and sampling rate. In this study, the optimum IR test conditions are suggested and validated experimentally. The test results showed that the recommended test conditions yielded a variation of resonant frequency within ${\pm}0.3%$ and damping ratio ${\pm}10.0%$. In addition, the modulus from the IR test was comparable to that from a static test when the effect of strain amplitude was properly taken into account.

  • This study presents results of an experimental investigation of the laser-arc, hybrid, butt welding process of SS400 structural steel. Welding parameters including laser power, welding current and speed were varied in order to obtain one-pass, full-penetration welds without defects. The conditions that resulted in optimal beads were identified. After welding, hardness measurements and microstructure observations were carried out in order to study weld properties. The mechanical properties of both the base material and welded specimen were compared based on the results of tensile strength measurements. The yield and tensile strengths were found to be similar.
