  • In this study, four reinforced concrete coupling beams were subjected to cyclic lateral loading test to evaluate the structural performance of coupling beam according to volume fraction of steel fiber. For this purpose, the volume fraction of steel fiber(0%, 1%, 2%) and transverse reinforcement spacing were determined as the main parameter. According to the test results, the maximum strength of D-40C-s100-0 was 1.15, 1.13, 1.05 times higher than D-40C-s300-0, D-40C-s300-1, D-40C-s300-2, respectively. The maximum strength of coupling beams with mitigated rebar details increases as the volume fraction of steel fiber increases. Although steel fiber 2% reinforced specimen(D-40C-s300-2) did not satisfy the amount of transverse reinforcement required for seismic design of coupling beam, the overall performance including to maximum strength, ductility and energy dissipation capacity was similar to the control specimen(D-40C-s100-0). As a result, the use of steel fiber with 2% reinforcement can partially replace the transverse reinforcement in diagonally reinforced concrete coupling beam.

  • This paper investigates tensile characteristics of the stress aging heat-treated SM45C steel which are aging temperature at $250^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$, aging time at 1, 3 hours, and applied load at 300, 400N conditions by using acoustic emission. Most suitable aging condition was aging temperature $300^{\circ}C$, aging time 1 hour, and aging applied load 300N. And increased yield load 28.3% than non-treatment specimen in this condition. AE energy in elastic limit increased about 16.7 times than non-treatment specimen. When aging time is 3 hours, yield load decreased than other conditions that possibility is high to have itself defect on inside the specimen or coarse grain size precipitation is different in happened over-aging phenomenon. Especially, in case of $300^{\circ}C$, 3 hours and 400N condition appeared AE energy in elastic limit fairly high about 30 times than non-treatment specimen. This is considered by emit a lot of energies when material causes plastic deformation because the ductility increases on specimen by over-aging phenomenon.

  • In this study, the rotary bending fatigue test was carried out with low carbon steel(SM25C). The specimens were heat-treated in order to change the grain size, and investigated items are fatigue limit, small crack initiation, fatigue crack propagation behavior and possibility of fatigue life prediction according to the different grain size. The summarized result are as follows ; Fatigue limit of the smooth specimen was dependent upon the grain size. The fatigue crack initiation of the small grain size specimen was delayed more than that of the large grain size specimen. And the small cracks of small grain size specimen were distributed in the narrow region of the main crack circumference contrary to the large grain size specimen. The main crack was grown along the grain boundary having co-alliance with small cracks. The experiment material has quantitatively disclosed the possibility of fatigue life prediction because the fatigue crack propagation behavior is dependent upon the grain size.

  • This study deals with the high frequency induction hardening (HF at $850^{\circ}C$, 120kHz & 50kW condition) SM45C steel. (1) The HF specimen, which was tempered at $150^{\circ}C$, did not show any tempering effect. A brittle fracture occurred at rounded area of the tensile specimen. AE (acoustic emission) amplitude distribution showed between 45dB and 60dB. (2) A slip and fracture occurred at the hole area of the HF specimen which was tempered at $300^{\circ}C$. As they pass the yield point, the AE energy is increased intermittently and AE amplitude distribution exists between 70dB and 85dB. In addition, after imposing the maximum tensile load, AE signals showed high amplitude and energy distribution. The AE amplitude showed between 45dB and 70dB. (3) A brittle fracture occurred at HF specimen which was tempered at $450^{\circ}C$ as if it is torn in the direction of $45^{\circ}$ on parallel area over the both sides of the tensile specimen, which lead to several peak appeared in AE energy. It was found that the AE amplitude was relatively low and the AE energy was high.

  • In this study, a monotonic loading test to estimate structural capacity of 12 meter long full scale precast pre-stressed concrete beam specimen was performed with a 2,000 kN dynamic actuator. A couple of embedded steel plate was installed at the ends of the beam and specimens were connected to steel girder frame with high tension bolts. Nominal compressive strength of pre-stressed concrete beam and slab were 50 MPa and 24 MPa respectively. Two HD25 tensile steel reinforcements were welded on vertical plate of embedded steel plate. Pre-stressed concrete beam specimen was loaded by displacement control method with a certain loading pattern which was repeated loading and unloading with 10mm increment displacement. About 88.34%, 86.97% and 66.83% of displacement restoration ratios were evaluated at elastic, inelastic and plastic behavior region of specimen respectively.

  • Local wall thinning is a point of concern in almost all steel structures such as pipe lines covered with a thermal insulator made up of materials with low thermal conductivity(fiberglass or mineral wool); hence, Non Destructive Technique(NDT) methods that are capable of detecting the wall thinning and defects without removing the insulation are necessary. In this study we developed a Pulsed Eddy Current(PEC) system to detect the wall thinning of Ferro magnetic steel pipes covered with fiber glass thermal insulator and shielded with Aluminum plate. The developed system is capable of detecting the wall thickness change through an insulation of thickness 10cm and 0.4mm aluminum shielding. In order to confirm the thickness change due to wall thinning, two different sensors, a hall sensor and coil sensor were used as a detecting element. In both cases, the results show a very good change corresponding to the thickness change of the test specimen. During these experiments a carbon steel tube of diameter 210mm and a length of 620mm, which is covered with insulator of 95mm thickness was used. To simulate the wall thinning, the thickness of the tube is changed for a specified length such as 2.5mm, 5mm and 8 mm from the inner surface of the tube. A 0.4mm thick Aluminum plate was covered on the Test specimen to simulate the shielding of the insulated pipelines. For both hall sensor and coil detection methods Fast Fourier transform(FFT) was calculated using window approach and the results for the test specimen without Aluminum shielding were summarized which shows a clear identification of thickness change in the test specimen by comparing the magnitude spectra. The PEC system can detect the wall thinning under the 95 mm thickness insulation and 0.4 mm Al shielding, and the output signal showed linear relation with tube wall thickness.

  • The induced chemical and salt solution in water or admixture are originated to the corrosion process of the steeo rebar. These liquids penetrate into concrete as the accompanied by the chemical reaction and cause to attack the steel rebar in concrete. Concrete surfaces which it exposed to deicing, water and sea water is allowed to enter the chlorides in the structures. To prevent from the source of corrosion and deterioration Is subjected to put an end to corrode or reduce to contaminate on the steel rebar. As this reason the MCI 2022 products are applied to the surface of concrete and steel rebar. The concrete samples were made of to the kind of four, i.e. RF, MR, MS, and MM. Corrosion inhibitor is applied to coat on the surface of concrete after it had been cured for 28days. Specimen were immersed in a 3.5% sodium chloride solution. Concrete specimen were tested to determine the changes of the resistance polarization, Rp, over a 22 weeks period. MCI 2022 is significantly shown the corrosion inhibition of steel rebar in 3.5% NaCl solution. In the each different concrete sample, MS and MM is seemed to be better than others. The results are proofed that MCI 2022 is promised to maintain the inhibition of corrosion with high resistance polarization of the steel rebar in concrete.

  • This study is to investigate the effect of a retrofitted reinforced concrete frame with non-seismic details strengthened by embedded steel moment frames with an indirect joint, which mitigates the problems of the direct joint method. First, full-scale experiments were conducted to confirm the structural behavior of a 2-story reinforced concrete frame with non-seismic details and strengthened by a steel moment frame with an indirect joint. The reinforced concrete frame with non-seismic details showed a maximum strength of 185 kN at an overall drift ratio of 1.75%. The flexural-shear failure of columns was governed, and shear cracks were concentrated at the beam-column joints. The reinforced concrete frame strengthened by the embedded steel moment frames achieved a maximum strength of 701 kN at an overall drift ratio of 1.5% so that the maximum strength was about 3.8 times that of the specimen with non-seismic details. The failure pattern of the retrofitted specimen was the loss of bond strength between the concrete and the rebars of the columns caused by a prying action of the bottom indirect joint because of lateral force. Furthermore, methods are proposed for calculation of the specified strength of the reinforced concrete frame with non-seismic details and strengthened by the steel moment frame with the indirect joint.

  • A106 Carbon Steel has recently been used as the material for pipes, nozzles, and tank shells in nuclear power plants. Its corrosion resistance gives the steel many advantages for use in structures under high temperature and high pressure. This steel is also expected to be used as a structural material in the shipbuilding industry for applications involving severe conditions, such as high temperature and pressure. In this study, the mechanical properties of A106 carbon steel were evaluated in regard to its corrosion times. The tensile and yielding strengths decreased as the corrosion time increased. In particular, the tensile strength was influenced by corrosion. In addition, an acoustic emission (AE) technique was used to clarify the microscopic damage to specimens that had undergone corrosion for a certain period. It was found that AE parameters, such as events, energy, duration time, and amplitude were useful for evaluating the degree of damage and remaining life of the corroded specimen. Various properties of the waveform and frequency range were also seen, based on the degree of damage to the specimen from the corrosion time.

  • A basic research for tailored blank welding between mild steel and Zn-coated steel was carried out with $CO_2$ laser beam. The materials used in this work were low carbon steel sheet with a thickness of 1.2mm and Zn-coated steel sheet with the same thickness and 6.3$\mu$m Zn coating. Experiments were carried out by applying the Taguchi method in order to obtain optimized conditions for the application of tailored blank laser welding method in practical manufacturing process. Optical microscopy, XRD, SEM and TEM analysis were performed to observe microstructures and to determine the solidification mode of welded zone. Also mechanical properties were measured by microhardness test tensile test and Erichsen test in order to evaluate the formability of welded specimen. There was no trapped Zn in the fusion zone, and the phases in this region consisted of polygonal ferrite, quasi-polygonal ferrite, banitic ferrite and martensite. The elongation value of welded specimen was more than 80% of that value in the substrate and LDH value was more than 90% of that value in the substrate metal.
