A stainless steel has high corrosion resistance because of nickel in material, so it is used as materials for transportation and storage of hydrogen. In this study, TIG(tungsten ingot gas) welding was carried out on the stainless steel using the storage vessel of hydrogen. The microscopic structures at each region of TIG welded material such as HAZ, weld and base metals using optical microscope were observed. And the damage behavior of stainless steel that underwent the hydrogen charging using nondestructive evaluation was also studied. Ultrasonic test, which is the most generalized nondestructive technique, was applied to evaluate the relationship between the ultrasonic wave and mechanical properties at each zone of TIG welded stainless steel. The velocity and attenuation coefficients of ultrasonic wave didn't show a remarkable difference at each region of welded stainless steel. However, the attenuation coefficient was the highest at the weld zone when hydrogen charged stainless steel. In addition, acoustic emission test was also used to study the dynamic behavior of stainless steel experienced both hydrogen charging and weld. Lots of AE event at elastic region of stress-strain curve were occurred both the hydrogen charged specimen and the free specimen.
Based on the test data of Nippon Steel Corporation, the formulas for calculating mechanical properties of fire-resistant (FR) steel at elevated temperatures have been established. A practical approach for fire safety design of FR steel members, including axially compressed members, flexural members and eccentrically compressed members, is developed in this paper. Compared with the full-scale specimen experiments and FEM numerical analysis, this practical approach for fire safety design of FR steel members is demonstrated to be effective and precise.
Austenitic stainless steel (STS304) has been carburized using glow discharge plasma and its microstructure, wear resistance and corrosion property have been investigated. A repeat boost-diffuse carburizing was used as an effective plasma carburizing method. The effective case depth of the plasma carburized specimens was increased with the carbon concentration at the surface area. The specimens prepared by 3 hours plasma carburizing under $600^{\circ}C$ did not have the standard hardness for the effective case depth, but the specimen prepared by 11 hours plasma carburizing at $500^{\circ}C$ had nearly the same hardness with the specimen plasma carburized for 3 hours at $800^{\circ}C$. The wear resistance increased with temperature but the corrosion properties of the specimens prepared over $600^{\circ}C$ decreased rapidly due to the grain boundary sensitization. However, the specimen plasma carburized for 11 hours at $500^{\circ}C$ had nearly the same wear resistance with the specimen plasma carburized for 3 hours at $800^{\circ}C$ without deterioration of corrosion property. This could be resulted from the fact that the microstructure of the specimen plasma carburized for 11 hours at $500^{\circ}C$ was composed of martensite and austenite, because a partial martensite transformation was occurred only in the specimen plasma carburized for 11 hours at 50$0^{\circ}C$.

Generally, a steel pier-foundation has been designed and constructed with a anchor frame. However, because of the complicated design and construction, the foundation's size has become large and has been overdesigned. In this study, three specimens were made and the tests were conducted to suggest a new shape in regard to the pier-foundation's joint details using the high performance steel. One of the specimens was made up of the general anchors and the anchor frame. Another specimen consisted of the high tension anchors and the studs, and the other specimen was composed of the high tension anchors and the inner steels. After the performance of each specimen was compared and analyzed, the behavior characteristics according to the joint were analyzed.
This paper investigates the applicability of newly developed Cu-Al-Mn shape memory alloy (SMA) bars to retrofitting of historical masonry constructions by performing quasi-static tests of half-scale brick walls subjected to cyclic out-of-plane flexure. Problems associated with conventional steel reinforcing bars lie in pinching, or degradation of stiffness and strength under cyclic loading, and in their inability to restrain residual deformations in structures during and after intense earthquakes. This paper attempts to resolve the problems by applying newly developed Cu-Al-Mn SMA bars, characterized by large recovery strain, low material cost, and high machinability, as partial replacements for steel bars. Three types of brick wall specimens, unreinforced, steel reinforced, and SMA reinforced specimens are prepared. The specimens are subjected to quasi-static cyclic loading up to rotation angle enough to cause yielding of reinforcing bars. Corresponding nonlinear finite element models are developed to simulate the experimental observations. It was found from the experimental and numerical results that both the steel reinforced and SMA reinforced specimens showed substantial increment in strength and ductility as compared to the unreinforced specimen. The steel reinforced specimen showed pinching and significant residual elongation in reinforcing bars while the SMA reinforced specimen did not. Both the experimental and numerical observations demonstrate the superiority of Cu-Al-Mn SMA bars to conventional steel reinforcing bars in retrofitting historical masonry constructions.

This paper presented an structural efficiency of steel coupling beam jointed single plate shear connections with seat and top angle. Parameters for the test specimens were are seat and top angle, reinforcing of concrete, embedded length, section loss. Steel coupling beam with angle showed excellent strength, stiffness, energy dissipation capacity. The specimen with no reinforcement around the embedded steel plate showed slightly low deformation capacity because of early failure in the precast concrete walls. However, the specimen with reinforcement around the embedded steel plate showed good deformation capacity. Deformation capacity was not decrease despite short embedded length. The specimen with section loss showed excellent deformation capacity. Because shear strength of steel coupling beam was lesser than of connections. These results showed that for workability and cost efficiency, the proposed system is promising for one of steel coupling beam.
The load-carrying capacity and structural behavior of concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) structures is highly influenced by the grouting compactness in the steel tube. Due to the invisibility of the grout in the steel tube, monitoring of the grouting progress in such a structure is still a challenge. This paper develops an active sensing approach with combined piezoceramic-based smart aggregates (SA) and piezoceramic patches to monitor the grouting compactness of CFST bridge structure. A small-scale steel specimen was designed and fabricated to simulate CFST bridge structure in this research. Before casting, four SAs and two piezoceramic patches were installed in the pre-determined locations of the specimen. In the active sensing approach, selected SAs were utilized as actuators to generate designed stress waves, which were detected by other SAs or piezoceramic patch sensors. Since concrete functions as a wave conduit, the stress wave response can be only detected when the wave path between the actuator and the sensor is filled with concrete. For the sake of monitoring the grouting progress, the steel tube specimen was grouted in four stages, and each stage held three days for cement drying. Experimental results show that the received sensor signals in time domain clearly indicate the change of the signal amplitude before and after the wave path is filled with concrete. Further, a wavelet packet-based energy index matrix (WPEIM) was developed to compute signal energy of the received signals. The computed signal energies of the sensors shown in the WPEIM demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method in the monitoring of the grouting progress.

A present LSD (limited state design) code for temperature load in the domestic bridge design has applied a uniform standard for various bridge types. In this study, in order to calculate the effective temperature, a specimen of steel box girder bridge section with real size dimension was manufactured. For a year, the temperature data were measured at the 18 point in steel deck of steel box girder bridges specimen. Effective temperature within the cross section according to atmospheric temperature was calculated by this experiment data. The analyzed results were very similar correlation when compared with the effective temperature of the Euro Code. Therefore, the effective temperature which calculated based on the present data could be used as the basic data in order to present to the appropriate design criteria for the thermal loads on the domestic bridge design.

In this study, out-of-plane flexural test was performed to analyze behavior properties for a beam specimen which imitated a structure with connection member between reinforced concrete and steel plate concrete part. Tie bars between a upper and a lower steel plate, and tie wide flange shapes between upper and lower ribs were designed to prevent the steel plate or the ribs from breakaway in the connection of the specimen. As a result of the test, ductile failure behavior of the specimen and the functionality of the tie members were conformed as originally intended. Also, tension tests were performed to evaluate the design appropriateness of two specimens produced to anchor and connect mechanically #14 bars. The two test results showed that the anchorage connection system behaves in elastic limit during the main bars yielded, and the integrity of the designed system was verified.
In this study, a new retrofitting method for improving the seismic performance of reinforced concrete column was presented, in which prestressed steel strips were utilized as retrofitting stuff to confine the reinforced concrete column transversely. In order to figure out the seismic performance of concrete column specimen retrofitted by such prestressed steel strips methods, a series of quasi-static tests of five retrofitted specimens and two unconfined column specimen which acted as control specimens were conducted. Based on the test results, the seismic performance including the failure modes, hysteresis performance, ductility performance, energy dissipation and stiffness degradation of all these specimens were fully investigated and analyzed. And furthermore the influences of some key parameters such as the axial force ratios, shear span ratios and steel strips spacing on seismic performance of those retrofitted reinforced concrete column specimens were also studied. It was shown that the prestressed steel strips provided large transverse confining effect on reinforced concrete column specimens, which resulted in improving the shearing bearing capacity, ductility performance, deformation capacity and energy dissipation performance of retrofitted specimens effectively. In comparison to the specimen which was retrofitted by the carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) strips method, the seismic performance of the specimens retrofitted by the prestressed steel strips was a bit better, and with much less cost both in material and labor. From this research results, it can be concluded that this new retrofitting method is really useful and has significant advantages both in saving money and time over some other retrofitting methods.
