  • A series of 6 reinforced concrete beams was tested to verify the effects of EBSP strengthened on cracked beams and to identify the various parameters affecting structure strengthening design(SSD). The parameters were the cross-sectional area of steel plates, the thickness of steel plates, and bond length of steel plates. In addition to these parameters, the effect of existing cracks on the strengthening was investigated. Test results show that EBSP is very effective and predictable for strengthening damaged structures. The results also show that the bond length of steel plates is the most important factor to develop ultimate load carrying capacities of strengthened beams. However, considerations in SSD should be given to assure the ductile failure at ultimate load such as the low ratio of thickness to the width of plates.

  • Dynamic loading of structures often causes excursions of stresses well into the inelastic range, and the influence of the geometric changes on the dynamic response is also significant in many cases. Therefore, both material and geometric nonlinearity effects should be considered in case that a dynamic load acts on the structure. A structure in a nuclear power plant is a structure of importance which puts emphasis on safety. A nuclear container is a pressure vessel subject to internal pressure and this structure is constructed by a reinforced concrete or a pre-stressed concrete. In this study, the material nonlinearity effect on the dynamic response is formulated by the elasto-viscoplastic model highly corresponding to the real behavior of the material. Also, the geometrically nonlinear behavior is taken into account using a total Lagrangian coordinate system, and the equilibrium equation of motion is numerically solved by a central difference scheme. The constitutive relation of concrete is modeled according to a Drucker-Prager yield criterion in compression. The reinforcing bars are modeled by a smeared layer at the location of reinforcements, and the steel layer model under Von Mises yield criteria is adopted to represent an elastic-plastic behavior. To investigate the dynamic response of a nuclear reinforced concrete containment structure, the steel-ratios of 0, 3, 5 and 10 percent, are considered. The results obtained from the analysis of an example were summarized as follows 1. As the steel-ratio increases, the amplitude and the period of the vertical displacements in apex of dome decreased. The Dynamic Magnification Factor(DMF) was some larger than that of the structure without steel. However, the regular trend was not found in the values of DMF. 2. The dynamic response of the vertical displacement and the radial displacement in the dome-wall junction were shown that the period of displacement in initial step decreased with the steel-ratio increases. Especially, the effect of the steel on the dynamic response of radial displacement disapeared almost. The values of DMF were 1.94, 2.5, 2.62 and 2.66, and the values increased with the steel-ratio. 3. The characteristics of the dynamic response of radial displacement in the mid-wall were similar to that of dome-wall junction. The values of DMF were 1.91, 2.11, 2.13 and 2.18, and the values increased with the steel-ratio. 4. The amplitude and the period of the hoop-stresses in the dome, the dome-wall junction, and the mid-wall were shown the decreased trend with the steel-ratio. The values of DMF were some larger than those of the structure without steel. However, the regular trend was not found in the values of DMF.

  • This paper studied the efficiency of retrofitting of reinforced concrete structure which was not designed to endure an earthquake. The earthquake in Kobe Japan showed that there was a great possibility of having an earthquake even in big city and the damages were concentrated on mid or low story buildings which were not considered to be protected from an earthquake, . This experiment used reinforced concrete structure which restrained side-by-side displacement to test durability against an earthquake. This study deals with the structural performance of reinforced concrete frame structures strengthened with steel materials.

  • Recently, many researches for high-strength and high-durability concrete structure have remarkably been studied by adopting new construction material, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP). In connection with these research trend, the shearing capacity of concrete beams reinforced by GFRP stirrup which is developed in this study was evaluated. Experimental variables are span to depth ratio and spacing of shear reinforcement for test. In the result of test, the crack pattern, failure mode and shear load between shear steel reinforcement specimen and GFRP stirrup reinforcement specimen showed similar structural tendency. Therefore, it was investigated that the adaptability of shear-reinforced concrete structure with GFRP stirrup will be improved with further researches of shear design variables.

  • In this study, a seismic risk analysis performed for an applicability assessment of steel fiber in containment structures. Steel fiber can increase tensile properties of concrete structures moreover compressive and shear capacity. But many of researches about steel fiber reinforced concrete structures are now only focused in axial load condition. Also it is very difficult to find an effort for application to containment structures in NPP. Therefore, in this study, seismic fragility assessment for a steel fiber reinforced concrete containment structure. As a result, a seismic fragility capacity improved according to increase of shear and ductile capacity of concrete. In the case of 1.0% of steel fiber volume fraction, seismic capacity increases as 10%. But very limited previous experimental results were used in this study, so various element tests were needed for more accurate investigation.

  • In building structure, the story height can be minimized by providing openings in beams which serves for the utility equipments passing through. The dead space in false ceiling thus put to economical use in the form of a substantial reduction in materials and construction cost. In the case of steel structure, there is no critical risk in the structural strength because of reinforcing methods of stiffness and steel plate but in the case of reinforced concrete structure, proper provision should be made in designing these openings, otherwise there is a risk that these opening will possibly weaken the structural strength of the building frame to a critical degree. In this paper, for the numerical analysis of the reinforced concrete beams with circular opening in the web, expecting stress concentration of the circular opening, reinforcing methods were studied. Twenty test pieces with each different reinforcing methods were tested and their resisting forces were defined. From the numerical analysis and test results, the followings were founded;(1)high shear stress distributed around the openings reduce the shearing strength, (2)from the numerical analysis, the maximum tensile stress occurred at opening nodes 1,7, these phenomena were agreed with the test results, (3)reinforcing method around openings have to carried out for stopping diagonal cracks, and (4)both, by steel plate, and wire mesh, are effective reinforcing methods.

  • Human-induced vibration could present a serious serviceability problem for large-span and/or lightweight floors using the high-strength material. This paper presents the results of heel-drop, jumping, and walking tests on a large-span composite steel rebar truss-reinforced concrete (CSBTRC) floor. The effects of human activities on the floor vibration behavior were investigated considering the parameters of peak acceleration, root-mean-square acceleration, maximum transient vibration value (MTVV), fundamental frequency, and damping ratio. The measured field test data were validated with the finite element and theoretical analysis results. A comprehensive comparison between the test results and current design codes was carried out. Based on the classical plate theory, a rational and simplified formula for determining the fundamental frequency for the CSBTRC floor is derived. Secondly, appropriate coefficients (βrp) correlating the MTVV with peak acceleration are suggested for heel-drop, jumping, and walking excitations. Lastly, the linear oscillator model (LOM) is adopted to establish the governing equations for the human-structure interaction (HSI). The dynamic characteristics of the LOM (sprung mass, equivalent stiffness, and equivalent damping ratio) are determined by comparing the theoretical and experimental acceleration responses. The HSI effect will increase the acceleration response.

  • Chloride ingress is a common cause of deterioration of reinforced concrete structures. Modeling the chloride ingress is an important basis for designing reinforced concrete structures and for assessing the reliability of an existing structure. The modelling is also needed for predicting the deterioration of a reinforced structure. This paper presents an approach for the probabilistic modeling of the chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcement steel in concrete structures that takes into account the uncertainties in the physical models. The parameters of the models are modeled as random variables and the distribution of the corrosion time and probability of corrosion are determined by using Monte Carlo simulation. The predictions of the proposed model is very effective to do the decision-making about initiation time and deterioration degree.
