  • It's important to note that the number of studies on the lateral vibration of steel liquid storage tanks has been quite modest in the past. The aim of this research has to look at the variables that affect vibration of storage tanks and to highlight the characteristics of a construction that hasn't received much attention in the literature. The storage tank has pre-sized in the study, and aluminum and steel have chosen as components. The specified material qualities and the factors utilized in the investigation has used to calculate vibration frequency values. The resulting calculations are backed up by tables and graphs, and it's an important to look into the parameters that affect the vibration frequencies that will occur on the designed storage tank vary. In the literature, water tanks are usually modelled as lumped masses. The horizontal stiffness of the column on which it is placed is assumed to be constant throughout. This is an approximation method of solving this problem. The column is handled in this study with a more realistic approach that fits the continuum mechanics in the analysis. The reservoir part is incorporated directly into the problem as the boundary condition.

  • In this study, it is carried out to analyze the international design standards such as Eurocode 8, API 650, NZSEE and etc for the seismic design of steel liquid storage tanks. From the comparison and analysis, the data for the required parameters and factors are provided for the establishment of Korean seismic design standard for steel liquid storage tanks. The simplified mechanical models have been presented for the seismic design of steel liquid storage tanks in all design standards and the parameters of mechanical models in design standards have similar values. Although the models for the seismic design of steel liquid storage tanks are similar in design standards, design approaches are given differently in accordance with the design methods, allowable stress design or limit state design. Therefore it is not easy to compare seismic forces presented in design standards directly. After comparison of design standards, it is concluded that establishment of Korean design standard for the seismic design of steel liquid storage tanks is necessary.

  • Steel cylindrical tanks are widely used for the storage of hazardous substances of which leakage must be prevented under any circumstances. However, the dynamic response of the steel cylindrical liquid storage tank depends sensitively on the fluid-structure interaction and the vibration of the tank structure and necessitates clarification for the safety of the tank structure. This paper presents the results of shaking table tests performed to examine the dynamic behavior of a scaled cylindrical steel tank model considering the presence or not of fixed roof and added mass at the top of the tank for various fluid levels. The test results confirm the occurrence of both beam-type and oval-type vibration modes and show that the larger content of liquid inside the container amplified the acceleration along the height of the cylindrical tank. The oval-type vibration modes are seen to be more dominant in case of large water-to-structure mass ratio.

  • While the codifying works or the earthquake resistant design codes for buildings and bridges have been carried out progressively, such works for tank structures are still at the beginning steps. In case of the collapse of tank structures under seismic actions, substantially severe damages are expected due to the spillage of tank contents in addition to the direct economic losses of tanks and contents. Therefore not only the analysis and verification methods for the dynamic behavior of tank structures but also the measures of minimizing the damage propagation should be included in the codes for tank structures. In this paper the design concepts and principles, the analysis and verification methods as well as the measures against the damage propagation are set forth, which are mandatory for the preparation of the earthquake resistant design codes for cylindrical liquid-storage steel tanks.

  • Special considerations on the design of liquid storage tanks should be taken into account for seismic and wind loads. But Korean industrial standard KS B 6225 does not specify detailed guidelines for a design. It is therefore necessary to improve design guidelines for a seismic and wind-proof design in KS B 6225. The purpose of this study is provide a basis for the development of improved seismic and wind-proof design procedures, especially about seismic and wind loads.

  • Liquid storage tank is one of the major infrastructures and generally used to store gases, drinking and utilizing water, dangerous fluids, fire water and so on. According to the recent reports and experiences, the tank structures are damaged in many earthquakes due to their low energy dissipating capacity. Therefore, many researchers have been tried to know the dynamic properties of the tanks including liquids. However, vary limited experimental studies are carried out using relatively small tank models. In this study, a series of shaking table tests are performed with maximum 2 m cubic rectangular liquid storage tanks made of steel to measure the natural frequency and estimate damping coefficient of impulsive and convective mode of the tanks. Especially, the damping values under different shapes and excitation methods are estimated by logarithmic decrement method and half power band-pass method and compared with current design code and standards such as ASCE 7, Eurocode 8 and NZS. Test results show that the impulsive mode damping is around 2% which is proposed by general standards and codes but the impulsive mode damping is 0.13% average that is slightly lower than the code recommendation.

  • Stability of cylindrical liquid storage tanks under seismic excitation could prevent catastrophic disaster of human life and economic loss. Domestic provisions on allowable compressive stress in tank walls to prohibit buckling failure are either incomplete or inconsistent, so foreign specifications such as API 650, BS EN 1998-4:2006 or New Zealand Standards are employed in stability design. In this study, response spectrum analyses are performed for plant tanks having different ratios of height to diameter or diameter to thickness to calculate hydrodynamic pressure on tank walls. Then nonlinear buckling analyses are conducted to estimate magnitude of buckling stress. By comparing analysis results with those from foreign design specifications, appropriate domestic design provisions are suggested.

  • The problem of the elastic buckling of a cylindrical liquid-storage tank subject to horizontal earthquake loading is considered. An equivalent static loading is used to represent the dynamic effect. A theoretical solution based on the nonlinear Fl$\ddot{u}$gge shell equations is developed, and numerical results are found using the new differential quadrature method. A second solution is obtained using the finite element package ADINA. A major motivation of the study was to show that the new method can serve to verify finite element solutions for cylindrical shell buckling problems. For this purpose the paper concludes with a comparison of buckling results for a number of cases covering a wide range in tank geometry.

  • In Korea, about 110,000 LPG small storage tanks of less than three tons have been installed in restaurants, houses and factories, and are used as LPG supply facilities for cooking, heating and industrial use. In the case of combustible liquefied gas storage tanks, the tank may rupture due to the temperature increase of the tank steel plate (approximately 600℃) even when the safety valve is operating normally, causing large-scale damage in an instant. Therefore, in the event of a fire near the LPG small storage tank, it is necessary to accurately predict the timing of the BLEVE(Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion) outbreak in order to secure golden time for lifesaving and safely carry out fire extinguishing activities. In this study, we have first investigated the results of a prior study on the prediction of the occurrence of BLEVE in the horizontal tanks. And we have developed thermodynamic models and simulation program on the prediction of BLEVE that can be applied to vertical tanks used in Korea, have studied the effects of the safety valve's ability to vent, heat flux strength of external fires, size of tanks, and gas remaining in tanks on the time of BLEVE occurrence and have suggested future utilization measures.

  • 9% nickel alloy steels used for LNG, cryogenic liquid, storage tank are welded with dissimilar Inconel or Hastelloy welding rod and the weldment shows similar characteristic with the dissimilar metal weld of low carbon steel and austenitic stainless steel. Band type indications are sometimes shown on the film during radiography test of the weldments. Thus this study identified whether the indications are non-relevant indications through material, radiographic test, ultrasonic test, liquid penetrant test and microstructure analysis and also proposed radiography film interpretation and cause of band type indications.
