Dissimilar joining of Al 6013-T4 alloys and austenite stainless steel was carried out using friction stir welding technique. Microstructures near the weld zone and mechanical properties of the joint have been investigated. Microstructures in the stainless steel side were composed of the heat affected zone and the plastically deformed zone, while those in the Al alloy side were composed of the recrystallized zone including stainless steel particles, the thermo-mechanically affected zone and the heat affected zone. TEM micrographs revealed that the interface region was composed of the mixed layers of elongated stainless steel and ultra-fine grained Al alloy with lamella structure and intermetallic compound layer. Thickness of the intermetallic layer was approximately 300nm and was identified as the A14Fe with hexagonal close packed structure. Mechanical properties, such as tensile and fatigue strengths were lower than those of 6013 Al alloy base metal, because tool inserting location was deviated to Al alloy from the butt line, which resulted in the lack of the stirring.
Several alloy bearing steels have been starting to replace for conventional high carbon and high chromium bearing steel since 1980. In this paper the global bearing developing trends were summarized in several important aspects- developments in alloy bearing steels for improved service life, development of inclusion rating method in bearing steel and developments in bearing service life testing.
Resistance spot welding has been widely used in the sheet metal joining processes because of its high productivity and convenience. Recently, automobile industries are trying to replace partly steel sheets with aluminum alloy sheets. Among currently produced aluminum alloys, Al alloy sheets of Al-Mg-Si(6000 series) are being tested. Especially, 6000 series are the most probable substitute in view of strength and weldability. In this paper, an attempt was made to apply resistance spot welding to joining of dissimilar sheet metals (KS6383+SCPZn or KS6383+SHCP). An effort was made to balance heating rate in the Al alloy with that in the steel sheets by increasing electrode tip diameter. Although resistance spot welding of Al alloy sheet and sheet metals does not produce desirable nugget, it proved to have reasonable strength if optimal weld condition is found by tensile-shear strength and fatigue life test. Since spot weld joints in automobile are always experiencing repeated load, spot welding methodology proposed in this paper is found to be not suitable to automobile body manufacturing.
Austenite stainless steel(ASS), aluminum alloy and nickel steel alloy are the most widely used in many cryogenic applications due to superior mechanical properties at low temperature. The Face-Centered Cubic(FCC) and Hexagonal Close-Packed(HCP) materials are used for the primary and secondary insulation barrier of Liquefied Natural Gas(LNG) carrier tank and various kinds of LNG applications currently. In this study, tensile tests of ASS, aluminum alloy and nickel steel alloy were carried out for the acquisition of quantitative mechanical properties under the cryogenic environment. The range of thermal condition was room temperature to $-163^{\circ}C$ and strain rate range was 0.00016/s to 0.01/s considering the dependencies of temperatures and strain rates. The comprehensive test data were analyzed in terms of the characteristics of mechanical behavior for the development of constitutive equation and its application.
A study was made to investigate the microstructure and the mechanical properties of low-carbon steel, Al-Mg alloy and Ti-6Al-4V alloy each representing bcc, fcc and hcp crystal structures, respectively fabricated by equal-channel angular(ECA) pressing. After a series of ECA pressings was performed, most grains were significantly refined below ${\mu}m$ in diameter with high mis-orientation of grain boundaries irrespective of different crystal structure used. Regarding the strain hardening capability, tensile tests of ultrafine grain (UFG) dual-phase (ferrite/martensite) steel which was different from UFG ferrite-pearlite steel were carried out at ambient temperature, and corresponding mechanical properties were discussed in relation to modified C-J analysis. Low-temperature and/or high strain-rate superplasticity of the UFG Al-Mg alloy and UFG Ti-6Al-4V alloy were also studied. Based on the analysis used in this study, it was concluded that UFG alloys exhibited the enhanced mechanical properties as compared to coarse-grained (CG) counterparts.
The wear behaviors of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene pins against titanium alloy and stainless steel disks moving in two different kinematic motion were investigated by conducting repeat pass rotational sliding and linear reciprocal sliding wear tests. Linear reciprocal motion wore more the polyethylene pin than did repeat pass rotational motion for both disk materials. It means that the repeated directional change of contact stresses generates more wear debris in polyethylene. For the linear reciprocal sliding tests, titanium alloy disks were damaged with some scratches after one million cycles but no surface damage was observed on the polyethylene pins. On the other hand, for the repeat pass rotational sliding tests, all titanium alloy disks were severely abraded on the entire region of sliding track. This phenomenon can be interpreted by that stress fatigue under repeated sliding contact initiated titanium oxide layer wear particles from disk surface, and these hard particles were embedded into polyethylene pin and then they severely abraded the disk surface. From these results it can be concluded that the kinematic motion in pin-on-disk wear tests play a crucial role on the wear behaviors of UHMWPE pins against titanium alloy and stainless steel disks.
Hot-dip aluminized coating has been widely used to protect steel substrate against corrosion. In this study, the corrosion behavior of hot-dip aluminized type 409L (11% Cr) stainless steel (SS) was investigated using macro- and micro-scale polarization tests. An Al-Fe-Si alloy layer that was formed due to inter-diffusion of alloying elements between Al coating and SS substrate was observed between Al coating and 409L SS substrate. In both macro- and micro-scale polarization tests, the corrosion potential ($E_{corr}$) of the 409L SS substrate was much nobler than that of the Al coating and alloy layer. $E_{corr}$ of the alloy layer was between that of Al coating and 409L SS substrate. This indicates that the alloy layer can act as a buffer between the more active Al coating and the nobler SS substrate for pit growth in aluminized SS. The presence of the alloy layer appears to be helpful in hindering pitting corrosion of aluminized SS.
In the present study, we investigate the effects of long-term heat treatment at elevated temperatures on the mechanical softening of the Mn-Mo-Ni low-alloy steel. The influence of long-term heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical strength was evaluated. To simulate the long-term material degradation, heat treatment test was interrupted at several stages up to 10,000 hours in an electric furnace. The Mn-Mo-Ni low-alloy steel shows a typical bainitic phase, which consists of a well-developed lath substructure with fine precipitates along the lath boundaries. However, these fine precipitates were redissolved into the matrix with long-term heat treatment, and then the lath substructures were recovered. Consequently, ultimate tensile strength and yield strength decreased during long-term heat treatment showing a mechanical softening phenomenon.
The formation mechanism of microconstituents in brazed joints of duplex stainless steel and Cr-Cu alloy which is an essential process of rocket engine manufacturing was investigated using Cu base insert metal. $SUS329J_3L$ and C18200 were used for base metal and AMS 4764 was used for insert metal. The brazing was carried out under various conditions. There were various phases in the joints, because of reaction between liquid insert metal and base metals. Since liquid insert metal reacts with duplex stainless steel, liquid Cu from insert metal infiltrated into the $\alpha/\beta$ interface of duplex stainless steel. Through the process of Cu infiltration, isolated stainless steel pieces come into the liquid insert metal. Since liquid insert metal reacts with Cr-Cu alloy. Cr precipitates from C18200 come into the liquid insert metal. With increment of bonding temperature and holding time, amounts and sizes of phases increased. but Cr-Mn compounds decreased at 1303k for 1.2ks and Mn-rich phases disappeared Fe-Cr compounds formed.
In the grinding of difficult-to-materials, the major problmes of conventional grinding are grinding burn, wheel wear, grinding surface crack, loading and glazing, When a conventioanl grinding wheel is used, wheel wear and grinding surface crack easily occur in low heat conductive material and annealed steel. Intermittent grinding is suitable for diffcult-to-matrical such as stainless steel, titanium alloy, aluminum alloy and copper alloy. The purpose of this paper is to develop a new type intermittent wheel of the grinding system for improving the problem of stainless steel grinding, to observe the effect of intermittent grinding on surface quality and grinding characteristics of stainless steel grinding using intermittent grinding wheel. The characteristics of intermittent grinding system improve surface quality, low grinding temperature and low loading.
