There are kinds of materials for protective heat shield, i.e.Zn-coated steel, AI-coated steel and aluminum alloy sheets. This study compare formability, corrosion resistance, heat protectability, weight, and cost of these materials for heat protective shield. Generally aluminum alloy sheets are less formable than steel sheets, but A1100 alloy sheet shows almost same press quality of steel parts, using the press dies which producing steel parts. The heat shields using aluminum alloy sheet and steel sheet show almost same heat protectibility. It is the conclusion that Zn-coated merit, and AI-coated steel sheet and aluminum alloy sheet can be used to protect functional corrosion in severely corrosive market area. The material cost of AI-coated steel sheet and aluminum alloy sheet for a mid-size car is almost same, so aluminum alloy sheet is more recommendable in the point of weight reduction of vehicle.
As the steam temperature of fossil power plant boiler is increasing, the use of 9Cr-1Mo high alloy material is prevalent and it is needed to investigate the characteristics of low cycle fatigue for high alloy and austenite stainless steel that has used up to recently. As a result of test, in 9Cr-1Mo high alloy steel, the relation of strain and fatigue life is non-linear and the crack mode of low cycle fatigue is brittle but in the austenite stainless steel, that of strain and fatigue life is linear and the crack mode of low cycle fatigue is ductile. Comparing the fatigue life between high alloy and austenite stainless steel, there is no consistent characteristics as to strains. But the fatigue life of 9Cr-1Mo steel is longer by 25% than that of STS304 stainless steel in the relatively low, 0.3% strain. In the other strain, the fatigue life of two materials is similar.
A rolled steel for structural parts and lead bronze alloy were bonded each other by a new semi-solid diffusion bonding process to investigate the effect of the process parameters, for example bonding temperature and bonding time, on the interface characteristics, and bonding behavior. It can be possible that manufacture of the bonded steel/lead bronze which has a cylindrical shape with inserted the lead bronze alloy into the steel ring by the diffusion bonding process under the semi-solid condition of the lead bronze alloy without any pressure and flux. It has been know that the control of the amount of the liquid phase in semi-solid lead bronze alloy was very important to obtain soundness interface, since the shear strength of the bonded steel/lead bronze at 850℃ for 60 minutes under the condition of about 40% of the liquid phase in the lead bronze alloy shows maximum value, 210 MPa. The shear strength increases with an increase in bonding time and show maximum value, and then decreases.
Application of a stronger and more durable material for reactor pressure vessels (RPVs) might be an effective way to insure the integrity and increase the efficiency of nuclear power plants. A series of research projects to apply the SA508 Gr.4 steel in ASME code to RPVs are in progress because of its excellent strength and durability compared to commercial RPV steel (SA508 Gr.3 steel). In this study, the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of SA508 Gr.3 Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel and SA508 Gr.4N Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel were investigated. The differences in the stable phases between these two low alloy steels were evaluated by means of a thermodynamic calculation using ThermoCalc. They were then compared to microstructural features and correlated with mechanical properties. Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel shows the upper bainite structure that has coarse cementite in the lath boundaries. However, Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel shows the mixture of lower bainite and tempered martensite structure that homogeneously precipitates the small carbides such as $M_{23}C_6$ and $M_7C_3$ due to an increase of hardenability and Cr addition. In the mechanical properties, Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel has higher strength and toughness than Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel. Ni and Cr additions increase the strength by solid solution hardening. In addition, microstructural changes from upper bainite to tempered martensite improve the strength of the low alloy steel by grain refining effect, and the changes in the precipitation behavior by Cr addition improve the ductile-brittle transition behavior along with a toughening effect of Ni addition.

The effects of iron content in coated layer, surface roughness and lubricants on the formability of commercial Zn-Fe alloy electroplated steel sheets used for automotive bodies were investigated. The higher the iron content in deposit, the lower the friction coefficient of Zn-Fe alloy electroplated steel sheets. The surface roughness of coated layer hardly influenced the frictional characteristics. The formability of Zn-Fe alloy electroplated steel sheets was found to be more affected by the lubricant than by iron content in Zn-Fe alloy electrodeposit.

In this study, corrosion fatigue characteristics of 12Cr alloy steel were investigated in 3.5wt.% NaCl solution of 150$^{\circ}C$ and 4.5bar. Behavior of corrosion fatigue cracks was measured by the indirect compliance method and compared with the results in distilled water and in air. 1) 12Cr alloy steel was susceptible to temperature. Its susceptibility was increased as the temperature was increased. 2) The crack growth characteristics of 12Cr alloy steel in distilled water were similar to 3.5wt.% NaCl solution. 3) The temperature of solution affects to the crack growth characteristics of 12Cr alloy steel. In corrosion solutions of 4.5bar, 150$^{\circ}C$, fracture surfaces of corrosion fatigue crack growth at a/W=0.3 was showed the trans-granular fracture suface. As the crack grew up, it was changed to inter-granular type. In condition of high temperature, The crack growth behaviors of 12Cr alloy steel were remarkable.
In recent years, Zn-Al-Mg alloy galvanized steel sheets have been widely used as coated steel sheets to support social capital in the infrastructure field. A feature of Zn-Al-Mg alloy-coated steel sheets is that they provide a better corrosion protection period than Zn-coated steel sheets. In this study, the corrosion resistance of a new Zn-Al-Mg alloy-coated steel sheet was investigated and compared to that of conventional commercially available coated steel sheets. The investigation confirmed that increasing the Mg concentration in the Zn-Al-Mg-coated steel sheet improved corrosion resistance, which was more than 10 times that of the galvanized steel sheet specified in JIS G 3302. The study findings also confirmed that the corrosion resistance reached more than twice that of the coated steel sheet specified in JIS G 3323. If such galvanized steel sheets are applied to social infrastructures that are exposed to severely corrosive environments, the service life of the infrastructure might be extended.

We studied the piezoresistivity of a steel-alloy 'wire when the deformation exceeds the elastic limit. It is that the piezoresistivity of the steel-alloy wire could be modeled by a bilinear function. To predict the plastic piezoresistivity relation, we developed a simple plastic piezoresistivity model based on the classical hardening plasticity. If structural members such as prestressing tendons in concrete structures are concerned, it is a very efficient and simple tool for monitoring.

The dissimilar welding between magnesium alloy and steel sheet was required in automobile industry to increase the strength of the dissimilar joints. Laser brazing is one of the good joining processes for Mg- steel dissimilar joint. In this study, AZ31 magnesium alloy and Zn coated steel dissimilar joint was brazed using diode direct laser with Mg600 filler wire and Superior #21 flux. The wetting of Mg filler wire on Zn coating was very good because of the formation of eutectic phase with low melting temperature. The strength of the brazed joint between AZ31 magnesium alloy and Zn coated steel was 131.3N/mm. The fracture occurred at brazement.
Prevention of crevice corrosion was studied for STS 304 stainless steel using a Mg-alloy galvanic anode in solutions with various specific resistivity. The crevice corrosion and corrosion protection characteristics of the steel was investigated by the electrochemical polarization and galvanic corrosion tests. Experimental results show that the crevice corrosion of STS 304 stainless steel does not occur in solutions of high specific resistivity, but it occurs in solutions of low specific resistivity like in solutions with resistivities of 30, 60 and $115{\Omega}{\cdot}m$. With decreasing specific resistivity of the solution, the electrode potential of STS 304 stainless steel in the crevice is lowered. The potential of STS 304 stainless steel in the crevice after coupling is cathodically polarized more by decreasing specific resistivity indicating that the crevice corrosion of STS 304 stainless steel is prevented by the Mg-alloy galvanic anode.
