  • The steam gererator which produces thermal energy from coal or gas is a very important device in power plants, including the turbine driving synchronous generator which transforms kinetic energy into electrical energy. The turbine and the generator are driven by many kinds of media according to the types of which power plants are classified into steam turbine generator, gas turbine generator, water turbine generator and so on. This paper introduces the overspeed protection as well as the various speed and load control methods of some types of turbines.

  • In Ocean, the temperature of the deep sea water is always lower than that of the surface sea water. The temperature difference between the surface water and deep sea water is about $20^{\circ}C$. Based on thermodynamics, this temperature difference can be converted into mechanical power. The mechanical power can be converted to electricity through a generator. However, the temperature difference is relatively small compared with that of traditional steam turbines. It is difficult to apply the steam turbine technology for this small temperature difference directly. Therefore, the turbine for OTEC system using low temperature difference should be designed to meet the system requirement. The present study focuses on the development of the turbine for 20 kW OTEC system using R32. The paper includes the determination of working fluids, meridional design, turbine layout and 3D CFD results. With off-design points analysis, the full performance of 20kW OTEC turbine is investigated. Through the research, one stage radial type turbine with R32 as working fluid is successfully developed and can be applied to other high temperature heat source.

  • In the present study, optimization of throttle margin for high pressure turbine to be retrofitted or partially modified for power uprating or life extension in nuclear power plant, has been performed to increase the electrical output. Throttle margin for high pressure turbine is required to maintain all the time the rated power by opening more of governor valves whenever inlet pressure is decreased due to the tube plugging of steam generator. If throttle margin of high pressure turbine is too much compared to remaining lifetime, loss of electrical output due to pressure drop of governor valves is inevitable. On the contrary, if it is too little, the rated power operation can not be accomplished when inlet pressure of high pressure turbine is dropped after many years operation. So, throttle margin for high pressure turbine in nuclear power plant is compromised considering for the degradation of steam generator, governor valve capacity, manufacturing tolerance of high pressure turbine, future plan of power uprating, and remaining lifetime of power plant.

  • As absorption type heat pump for waste heat recovery is installed in combined cycle power plant for Energy Service Company, performance test is implemented to confirm the operation data on partial load. The operation data changes according to the heat pump operation on partial load are as follows. Total heat output increases, because waste heat of closed cooling water and a portion of LP steam from HRSG is supplied. But electric power output of steam turbine is reduced, because LP steam to steam turbine is reduced. And heat output from HP district heater and LP district heater is reduced, because HP turbine exhaust steam to HP district heater and LP district heater is reduced. On partial load operation, turbine output reduction is higher than the base load operation. Therefore, on partial load, heat pump should be operated in consideration of the heat output increase and electric power output reduction.

  • The tilting pad journal bearings have been widely used to support high pressure/high rotating turbine rotors owing to their inherent dynamic stability characteristics. However, fatigue damages in the upper unloaded pads and the break of locking pins etc. by pad fluttering are continuously taken place in the actual steam turbines. The purpose of this paper is to develop a new bearing model that can prevent bearing problems effectively by pad fluttering in a tilting pad journal bearing. A new bearing model which has a wedged groove is suggested from the studies of fluttering mechanism performed by previously research works. The fluttering characteristics of the upper unloaded pad are studied experimentally in order to verify the reliability of a new bearing model. It can be known that the phenomenon of pad fluttering nearly does not occurred in the new bearing model under the various experimental conditions. And it is observed that any kinds of bearing failures by pad fluttering does not detect in the application of acture steam turbines.

  • Governing equations and numerical solution methods are derived for the analysis of a combination-type-staggered-labyrinth seal used in high performance steam turbines. A bulk flow is assumed for each combination-type-staggered-labyrinth cavity. Axial flow through a throttling labyrinth strip is determined by Neumann's leakage equation and circumferential flow is assumed to be completely turbulent in the labyrinth cavity. Moody's wall-friction-factor formula is used for the calculation of wall shear stresses. For the reaction force developed by the seal, linearized zeroth-order and first-order perturbation equations are developed for small motion near the centered position. Integration of the resultant first-order pressure distribution along and around the seal defines the rotordynamic coefficients of the combination-type-staggered-labyrinth seal. Theoretical results of leakage and rotordynamic characteristics for the IP4-stage seal of USC (ultra super critical) steam turbine are shown with the effect of sump pressure, the number of throttling labyrinth strip, and rotor speed.

  • Nuclear and thermal power plants must provide the turbines with an appropriate degree of high temperature and high pressure steam, to produce the optimum electricity. Additionally, in the event of system and power system failure during electrical production, the steam is immediately disabled, to protect the turbines and generators rotating at high speed. The plant thus uses a special steam control valve system for turbine control, which is opened by force of the hydraulic servo actuator and closed by a large steel spring force. In this study, the causes of failure of the turbine control valve system, a key device of the power plants, were analyzed, and the causes of failure were improved relative to reliability of the equipment.

  • Steam turbine rotors are the most critical and highly stressed components of a steam power plant; therefore, the life expectancy of the turbine rotor is an important consideration for the safety of a steam power plant. The objective of this paper is to develop a life estimation program for turbine rotors for all possible operating conditions. For this purpose, finite element analysis was carried out for four normal operating modes (cold, warm, hot and very hot starts) using ABAQUS codes. The results are made into databases to evaluate the life expenditure for an actual operating condition. For any other possible abnormal operating condition, the operating data are transmitted to the server (workstation) through a network to carry out finite element analysis. Damage estimation is carried out by transmitting the finite element analysis results to the personal computer, and then the life expectancy is calculated.

  • The sizes of last stage blades (LSB) in a low-pressure steam turbine have been getting larger for the development of high-capacity power plants. They are also larger than other blades in the same system. As a result, crack propagation in an LSB is caused by the large centrifugal force, low natural frequency, and repeated turbine startups. In this study, the critical crack length for a fracture and vibration characteristics, in accordance with crack propagation, were analyzed using a finite element method to calculate the stress intensity factor (SIF) and the natural frequency that was affected by the stress-stiffening effect. It was calculated that the frequency of the third and fifth modes passed the excited harmonic resonance (5X and 10X) and the observed calculated critical crack length matched that of the real fractured surface.

  • In this study, acombined cogeneration power plant produced two types of thermal energy and electric or mechanical power in a single process. The performance of each component of the gas turbine-combined cogeneration system was expressed as a function of the fuel consumption of the entire system, and the heat and electricity performance of each component. The entire system consisted of two gas turbines in the upper system, and two heat recovery steam generators (HRSG), a steam turbine, and two district heat exchangers in the lower system. In the gas turbine combined cogeneration system, the performance test after 10,000 hours of operation time, which is subject to an ASME PTC 46 performance test, was carried out by the installation of various experimental facilities. The performance of the overall output and power plant efficiency was also analyzed. Based on the performance test data, the test results were compared to confirm the change in performance. This study performed thermodynamic system analysis of gas turbines, heat recovery steam generators, and steam turbines to obtain the theoretical results. A comparison was made between the theoretical and actual values of the total heat generation value of the entire system and the heat released to the atmosphere, as well as the theoretical and actual efficiencies of the electrical output and thermal output. The test results for the performance characteristics of the gas turbine combined cogeneration power plant were compared with the thermodynamic efficiency characteristics and an error of 0.3% was found.
