  • Objective : We reviewed the feasibility, safety and efficacy as well as the clinical outcome and long-term angiographic results of endovascular treatment (EVT) of the anterior communicating artery (ACoA) aneurysms. Methods : A total of 429 ACoA aneurysms in 426 patients were treated using coil embolization between March 1996 and October 2010 in a single institution. Pretreatment aneurysmal features were checked using angiogram. We had usually used tailored steam shaped microcatheter according to individual angiographic architectures. Immediate postembolization outcomes were evaluated using an angiographic outcome scale and clinical evaluation was performed using the Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS). Results : Postembolization angiograms demonstrated total occlusion of aneurysm in 290 of 429 (67.6%) aneurysms, neck remnant in 80 (18.6%) and body filling in 59 (13.8%). Dome direction and aneurysm angle was not associated with initial angiographic outcomes. The procedure-related morbidity rate was 0.9% (4 of 429). Clinical and imaging follow-up more than 6 months were available in 382 (89.0%) patients with a mean of 26.2 months. Overall rate of major recanalization was 7.9% (30 of 382) and all of them were retreated without complications. At the last follow-up, 233 (99.2%) of 235 patients had GOS of 5 in unruptured group, and 152 (79.5%) of 191 patients showed good clinical outcomes (GOS of 4 or 5) in ruptured group. Conclusion : Tailored steam shaping of the microcatheter is vital to achieve good angiographic outcomes regardless of aneurysmal direction. EVT is feasible and safe for most ACoA aneurysms with acceptable immediate and long-term outcomes.

  • The dealuminated and alkali/alkaline-earth metal exchanged Y-zeolites were prepared as a catalyst. Elemental compositions and structures of the prepared catalysts were analyzed by the various spectroscopic techniques such as inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy(ICP-AES), X-ray fluorescence(XRF) and X-ray diffraction(XRD), and the desorption behaviors of adsorbed species on the catalyst surfaces were investigated via NO-TPD experiment. Comparing with the composition of the starting material of NaY zeolite, the magnitudes of Si/Al ratio in catalytic materials were increased after dealumination. The Si/Al ratio of catalytic materials after dealumination followed by Cs and Ba cation exchange were additionally decreased. Dealumination to catalysts induced a destruction of basic frame due to a detachment of aluminum, which results in reducing framework structure, while increasing non-framework structure. This phenomenon becomes more serious with increasing time of steam treatment and even more significant for the cation exchanged catalysts. In NO-TPD experiments, the desorption peaks of NO which indicates an activity point of catalysts shifted to the low temperature region after dealumination and cation exchange. The desorption peaks of the NO-TPD profiles taken after steam treatment also shifted to the low temperature region as the steam treatment time increased. In dealuminated and cation exchanged Y-zeolites, the catalytic activities were more influenced by exchanged cation and the formation of non-framework structure.

  • MF is a half shaft blast furnace which has been developed at Mitsui Miike Smelter in the 1960’s to treat vertical retort residue. The MF has also been tested for treatment of various recycling materials and wastes. Now various secondaries and wastes (EAF dust, zinc leaching residue, Cu sludge, etc ) are mainly treated. Powder materials are briquetted with reductant before being fed to the furnace. Products are crude zinc oxide, matte, non-hazardous slag and steam. Zinc and lead are recovered in oxide dust, and copper and silver are recovered in matte. The MF can be widely applied to many kinds of materials which contain such non-ferrous metal-valuables. In addition, the improvement in operation and technology has effectively made the unit capacity much larger. The MF now has many advantages for these treatment processes.

  • Since Cr-Mo-V steel has excellent fracture and creep properties at elevated temperature, they are extensively used as steam turbine components such as the turbine rotor. However, the turbine rotor steel used to suffer material degradation during long term service. Therefore, the assessment of the safety and residual life of the turbine rotor is periodically required during service. One of the most convenient techniques for that is the hardness method mainly due to its simplicity and nondestructive characteristics. In this research, six specimens with different aging times of turbine rotor steel were artificially prepared by an isothermal heat treatment at $630^{\circ}C$. The micro Vickers hardnesses of specimens were measured at room temperature. The relationships between the fracture properties and the hardness ratio were investigated. And also an indirect method to evaluate the residual life of degraded turbine rotor was proposed based on the micro Vickers hardness measurement.

  • In order to make a supermicrofiber fabric with PET/co-PET sea-island type filament fiber, the optimum conditions of dissolution of co-PET composite filament fiber was examined. The data set was made at various organic acid concentration and steam temperature with treated time as a main variable. At the same time, the microstructure changes by organic acid treatment of sea-island type PET supermicrofibers were monitored by thermal analysis morphology, DSC thermgrams and SEM images. Weight reduction behavior of supermicrofibers by caustic treatment was investigated in a comparative method. The termination of dissolution was also confirmed using DSC thermgrams and SEM images.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate changes of the components in steamed and roasted green tea after 10 min, 20 min and 30 min of heat treatment of heat treatment at $110^{\circ}C$. Vitamin C and tannin were determined by spetrophotometry. Total nitrogen, water-soluble nitrogen and water-soluble non protein nitrogen were determined by Kjeldahl analysis system. Aromas were identified by gas chromatography. After heat treatment, contents of most compounds decreased. Tannin and caffeine decreased a little bit, while vitamin C decreased considerably. There were both decreases and increases in aromas. Aromas which increased were geraniol, trans-2-hexenol, linalool, $\alpha$-ionone and $\beta$-ionone. From these results, it was concluded that the highest quality of green tea was one steam- treated for 10 min at $110^{\circ}C$.

  • The main feature of these total technologies is that we can constitute the optimum treatment scheme fitting to the property of wastes, amount of wastes and energy requirement. For high moisture content wastes or biomass resources, high pressure steam process (MMCS) for crush, dry and deodorize wastes to produce high quality fertilizer of fuel is most appropriate. For dry or semi-dry solid wastes, the STAR-MEET system can be applied to produce low-BTU gases for power generation using duel fueled diesel engines of Stirling engines, and the REPRES and HyPR-MEET systems can be applied to produce hydrogen rich medium-BTU gas. For waste plastics and oils, liquefaction technology is best fit to produce light oil or kerosene equivalent fuel oils. These total technologies are completely different from the existent waste treatment technologies based on land-filling or incineration, and are expected to disseminate all over the world in the near future.

  • In this study, two kinds of activated carbon fibers were prepared from PAN-based stabilized fibers by physical activation with steam. The variations in specific surface area, amount of iodine adsorption and pore size distribution of the activated carbon fibers after the activation process were discussed. The activated carbon fibers were prepared by two different methods, namely a 1- and 2-step method. For the 2-step method, carbonization of fibers in $N_2$ atmosphere was carried out to make carbon fibers and then activated by steam. In normal two step steam activation, BET surface area of about $1019m^2/g$ was obtained in the study. In the 1-step steam activation process, the carbonization and activation were simultaneously carried out. In the one step steam activation, BET surface area of $1635m^2/g$ was obtained after heat-treatment at $990^{\circ}C$. However, nitrogen adsorption isotherms for oxidized PAN based activated carbon fibers that were prepared by both methods were type I in the Brunauer-Deming-Deming-Teller (BDDT) classification even though they have different BET surface areas, amounts of iodine adsorption and pore size distributions.

  • In order to investigate the ability of log wood for oak mushroom production as a source of an alternative energy, both chemical and physical characteristics of log wood were investigated according to the cultivation periods. Also, both chemical and physical characteristics of material that treated by steam explosion were investigated to confirm the pretreatment effect by remaining enzyme as a control. The contents of ash, water-, alkali- and organic soluble extracts have been increased after the inoculation. It appeard that holocellulose contents substantially decreased and the contents of lignin as another main component of wood remained constant after the inoculation. However this result implied that indeed, a sufficient amount of lignin has been degraded paritially by enzymes of oak mushroom Lentinus edodes if we consider that the amount of holocelulose was substantially reduced. It also indicated that the degree of degradation gradually progressed but crystallinity decreased after the inoculation. The contents of water-, alkali- and organic soluble extracts have been increased by steam explosion. Holocellulose contents increased within narrow limits and lignin contents remained constant. However the contents of holocellulose and lignin have been decreased by steam explosion, considering that the amount of other extractives was relatively increased. The degree of crystallinity and lignin contents reduction by steam explosion was almost similar to the result obtained by increasing cultivation periods. According to the results, log woods for mushroom production have a potential as material for developing alternative energy.
