  • Radial variation of sound absorption capability and air permeability of yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) wood in cross sectional surface and effect of steam explosion treatment were estimated by the two microphone transfer function method and the capillary flow porometry, respectively. The sound absorption coefficients of steam explosion treated wood was higher than those of control wood and these values increased with frequency. Abundant and big vessel may behave as sound absorbing pore observed on the cross sectional surface of yellow poplar wood. The sound absorption coefficients and air permeability of sapwood were higher than those of heartwood for Liriodendron tulipifera.

  • Korea's first commercial nuclear power plant, Kori Unit 1, was permanently shut down on June 18, 2017, after 40 years of successful operation. Kori Unit 1 plans to construct a waste treatment facility in the turbine building prior to commencement of dismantling in earnest. Various radioactive wastes are decontaminated, disassembled, cut and melted in the waste treatment facility and sent to the radioactive waste repository. The proportion of metal radioactive waste in dismantled waste is about 70%, of which large metal radioactive waste is mainly generated in the primary circuit and has high radioactivity, so radiation exposure must be managed during disassembly. In this study, the steam generators are selected as large metal radioactive waste, the exposure doses of the dismantling workers are calculated using RESRAD-RECYCLE code and the methods for reducing the exposure doses are suggested.

  • The major substrates used in soilless growing media are peat moss and perlite, where peat moss is a limited and expensive natural resource. Determination of appropriate substrates based on technical and economic feasibility is the vital aspect of research and the key to success in any soilless production system. This research work was performed to evaluate different low-cost and sustainable alternative substrate as soilless growing media for horticulture plant. The objective of this study was to compare the effect of sawdust species and steam treatment, for physico-chemical properties and growth of horticultural plant. This study involves the physical and chemical characterization and growth test of four substrate (pine sawdust, oak sawdust, steamed pine sawdust and steamed oak sawdust) in order to evaluate their use as components of growing media. Steamed oak sawdust ($121^{\circ}C$, 30 min) showed adequate physical and chemical properties compared to peat moss for their use as growing media. The growing media were prepared using different mixture proportion to grow Brassica campestris L., Festuca arundinacea and Lespedeza cyrtobotrya Miq. The highest germination, stem length and leaf area of Brassica campestris L., Festuca arundinacea and Lespedeza cyrtobotrya were observed in 30 minute steamed oak sawdust mixture growing media. The steam treatment condition of sawdust used in the growing media significantly positive affected the germination, the stem length and the leaf area.

  • Unfortunately leaks occur in heat exchangers periodically, usually at the tube to tubeplate joint. The usual method of repair is to plug off the defective area and isolate the tubes of concern from the circuit. If the leaks continua the thermal capacity of the units is progressively reduced and for this reason the alternative of using an internal bridging sleeve has been examined. This paper discusses the overall development activities that has been found necessary to bring this repair procedure to a successful conclusion for use on the nuclear steam generator. In this work we have investigated optimum explosives and explosive quality, explosive sleeving's thickness, the design of sheath stress relieving heat treatment pull-out load, hydraulic leakage, stress corrosion cracking properties. The results obtain are as follows : (1) The optimum explosives and explosive qualities are PETN and about 15~40 gr/ft of explosive sleeving in nuclear steam generator. (2) Explosive sleeving's thickness is 1.1~l.4mm, If groove of 0.35mm formed in sleeve outside existed, For the hydraulic leakage is go up, explosive sleeving of formed groove are applicate tube and turnplate. (3) If the stress relieving heat treatment are experiment in $750^\circ{C}$, $850^\circ{C}$, 15 minutes Pull-out strength of sleeving 1,500~2,300kg, hydraulic leakage is $250kg/cm^2$.

  • Two species(Quercus mongolica, populus euramericana) of hardwood chips were subjected to steam explosion 25 kg/$cm^2$, for 6 min. The exploded woods were treated by the single or multi-stage chemical process with sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite and sodium chlorite. The multi-stage treatment of exploded wood can be successfully removed lignin. Enzymatic hydrolysis rate of substrate varied from 25% for exploded wood to about 80% for the multi-chemical treated exploded wood. The enzymatic susceptibility was different among wood species. The multi chemical treatment of the exploded wood resulted in the high rate of glucose in the enzymatic hydrolyzate. Cellulase adsorption increased at high lignin content of substrates, while crystallinity, pore area and specific surface area of substrates did not affected enzyme adsorption. According to the proposed pretreatment and saccharification process in this study, it can be acquired about 37~40 kg of glucose from 100 kg of hardwood.

  • Platycosides are the saponins in Platycodi Radix and they have several beneficial effects such as antiinflammatory and anti-obesity activities. This study was designed to determine the changes in the saponin composition in Platycodi Radix (platycosides) after being processed under steam and pressure and to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of their extracts. The change of the platycoside compositions was investigated after 1, 2, 3, 6 and 9h heat processing of Platycodi Radices by using HPLC coupled with an evaporative light scattering detection (ELSD) system. After heat treatment ($125^{\circ}C$, 1, 2, 3, 6 and 9 h), the contents of several platycosides such as platycoside E, platycodin $D_3$, platycodin D, polygalacin D, and platycodin A decreased as the processing time was longer. While the total contents of the saponins decreased, the contents of deapi-forms of deapiplatycoside E, deapi-platycodin $D_3$, and deapi-platycodin D increased relatively. These results indicate that the linkage between apiose and xylose located at C-28 is labile to heat and pressure. The LPS-induced iNOS inhibitory activities of the samples treated for 1 and 2 hours were enhanced and after then, the activities were reduced. These results suggested that heat treatment of the samples affect the content of the total saponins and the saponin content may be the important criteria representing the anti-inflammatory activity.

  • Purpose: Little information has been published regarding minor burn injuries in infants, most of which are preventable. To fill this research gap, this study explored the patterns and mechanisms of burn injuries in infants to ascertain whether such incidents can be prevented. Methods: This was a retrospective study, based on data collected prospectively from all infants (<12 months old) admitted to our hospital with burns in the four-year period between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2018. A medical record review provided basic demographic information, such as age at the time of injury, sex, cause of injury, duration of treatment, operative treatment, and the extent and type of burn, as well as the anatomical region involved. Results: Fifty-seven infants were diagnosed with burn injuries, with scalding being the most common type (47%), followed by contact (32%) and steam (14%). Seven infants of eight steam burn patients injured by pressure cooker. Superficial second degree was the most common depth of injury (72%) followed by first degree (17%) and deep second degree (8%). Average age per injury type was calculated by independent T-test. Average ages of patients with contact and steam burns were significantly lower (7.06 months; P=0.19) and higher (9.25 months; P=0.005), respectively, than for other burn types. Conclusion: Given that infants cannot control their body movements, talk, or manage by themselves, they are entirely dependent on the proper care of adults. Consequently, in addition to the prevention of burns, special care should be taken for the pressure cooker.

  • Recently, MBT(Mechanical Biological Treatment) facilities were built up and operated to separate and recycle MSW(Municipal Solid Wastes)in South Korea. However, the size distribution of MSW is very rough, and it is causing operation problem because MSW would be crushed in undersize diameter by mechanical equipment before feeding each seperation process. Also, the organic material should be pre-seperated to reuse recycle material in MSW. In this research, the reactor of 1ton/batch using the super-heated steam was tested to present the separation efficiency and the size distribution of MSW by experimental factors.

  • The purpose of this study was to develope the remediation method of contaminated soils with metals and petroleum. The diesel degrading strain was isolated and identified from the soil contaminated by petroleum at industrial sites. Diesel biodegradation experiment was performed by diesel degrading bacteria in both solution and soil slurry. Contaminated soils by Zn or As and diesel were treated consecutively by steam-vapor extraction, biodegradation, and acid washing. The strain was identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and named as Pseudomonas aeruginosa TPH1. The optimal culture conditions of TPH1 were $20^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.0, 3% of diesel concentration. Biodegradation of diesel was performed using the separated strain in liquid medium, and 63% of diesel was degraded in 72 hours. And 52% of diesel was removed in the tested soils. In the treatment of contaminated soils with diesel and Zn or As, 29% ~ 44% of diesel was reduced by steamvapor extraction, 60% ~ 71% of diesel was removed after biodegradation. 47% of Zn and 96% of As were removed after acid(mixture of sulfuric and oxalic acids) washing. It is recommended that consecutive treatment method of steam-vapor extraction, biodegradation and acid washing is effective for remediation of complex contaminated soils with metals and petroleum.

  • Cellulose acetate is one of well-known industrial materials which have various commercial uses. We treated the lignocellulosic biomass using two-step (steam explosion-chemical) reaction followed by acetylation to get the cellulose acetate in this study. The two-step treatment was done to improve the yields of acetylation of the substrates. The yields of the cellulose acetate were about 88.4, 88.1, and 151.7% in barley straw, rice straw, and oak tree, respectively. Also the degree of substitution (DS) of the acetates was 2.1 to 2.5 in the biomass. We found that the biomass were valuable cellulosic sources, including their derivatives, in this study. This means that the biomass can be converted into the high-valued cellulosic stuff.
