  • The deodorizing responses of the steam distillate from some medicinal plants(G-3) on three representative malodors were evaluated by estimating the best estimate threshold(BET) of odor responses. With a single spray of G-3, the BETs of malodors such as ammonia, acetic acid, and ethyl acetate were found to increase 4.11, 32.6 and 13.1 fold, respectively, which indicated G-3 possessed a potent deodorizing activity. The deodorizing potency of G-3 was also demonstrated to be as high as and even higher than those of the commercial deodorizing agents.

  • The acute toxicity and the effect of steam distillate obtained from several plant mixtures (G-3) on the reactivation of brain, lung, and blood acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, and recovery from other toxic symptoms following intoxication by organophosphate pesticides were investigated in mice and mudfish. Administration of G-3 $(50{\sim}100\;ml/kg,\;i.p.)$ immediately or 30 min prior to Diazinon or Sumithion treatments, respectively, resulted in a significant reactivation of AChE activity in brain, lung, and blood, their potencies being almost equipotent to those of 2-PAM, one of well-known antidotes. G-3 itself exhibited almost no acute toxicity even at the highest dose employed, and without effect on the inhibition of hepatic drug metabolism function following organophosphate administrations. G-3 showed a significant diminution of the death rate in mudfish as well as in mice intoxicated by Diazinon.

  • Application of steam distillation on the analysis of pesticide residue in soil, water and crops was studied using the nitrogen distillation apparatus. Most pesticides which were extracted by organic solvents could be analyzed by the steam distillation method. For instance, distillations of PCNB, ${\gamma}-BHC$, ${\alpha}-or$ ${\beta}-endosulfan$, IBP, diazinon, fenthion, fenitrothion, alachlor, butachlor, pretilachlor, metolachlor, pendimethalin, benthiocarb and molinate were possible, but not simazine, atrazine and nitrofen. The optimum volume of distillate for a sufficient extraction of pesticide varied according to kind of pesticide. In general, the volume needed was little for carbamate, but much more for organochlorine. When the definite amount of distillate was obtained and then the condenser was washed by acetone, the optimum volume of distillate was less. Using the steam distillation method, the amount of organic solvent needed for one extraction of pesticide from soil, water and vegetable was less than the conventional solvent extraction method, and the analytical procedure became simpler. The process of concentration and clean up was mostly unnecessary, although a ghost peak was apparent in the gas chromatogram according to the kind of materials distilled.

  • Volatile flavor components of fresh ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer.) were studied. Steam distillate of fresh ginseng was extracted with ethyl ether and the extract was separated into four fraction: neutral, phenolic, acidic and basis fractions. The ethyl ether concentrates and neutral fraction were analyzed by a combination of SE-54 fused silica capillary gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Major flavor components of fresh ginseng were predominantly mono(n +2) and sesquiterpenes(n +3) in over two hundred constituents. Of these, 28 were newly identified in volatile flavor components of fresh ginseng by GC-MS.

  • Empty fruit bunch (EFB) char was used to remove $NO_x$ and odorous substances. The physicochemical properties of the EFB chars were altered by steam or KOH treatments. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area and porosity were measured to determine the properties of the modified EFB chars. The $deNO_x$ and adsorption test for hydrogen sulphide and acetaldehyde were performed to determine the feasibility of the modified EFB chars. The KOH-treated EFB (KEFB) char revealed higher $deNO_x$ efficiency than with commercial activated carbon. The Cu-impregnated EFB char also had high $deNO_x$ efficiency at temperatures higher than $150^{\circ}C$. The KEFB char showed the highest hydrogen sulphide and acetaldehyde adsorption ability, followed by the steam-treated EFB char and untreated EFB char. Moreover, the product prepared by sulfonation of EFB char showed excellent performance for esterification of palm fatty acid distillate for biodiesel production.

  • The antimicrobial activity of Manuka oil, a steam distillate from Leptospermum scoparium, was investigated, and it's MIC against ten kinds of microorganisms was determin ed. MICs against bacteria and fungi were measured by means of both two-fold dliution method and agar plate two-fold dilution method, respectively. MICs of Manuka oil against Staphylococcus aureus KCTC 1916 and Micrococcus luteus KCTC 1915, gram-positive microrganisms, were identical as 3.05 ${\mu}$g/ml, while it's antibacterial activity against gram-negative microrganisms such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa KCTC 2513, Escherichia coli KCFC 1682, Klebsiella pneunioniae KCTC 2001 or Proteus vulgaris KCTC 2433 was negligible(MIC: ${\geq}$ 1000 ${\mu}$g/ml), suggesting a high susceptibility of gram-positive bacteria to Manuka oil. In addition, MIC against Aspergillus niger KCTC 6077 was 24 ${\mu}$g/ml. and that against the other fungi, Tricophyton mentagrophytes KCTC 1374 and Candida albicans KCTC 1940 was ${\geq}$ 1000 ${\mu}$g/ml. When Manuka oil ointment was used in combination with other drugs. i.e.. gentamycin sulfate, chlotrimazol and hydrocortisone acetate, and diphenhydramine HCl and hydrocortisone acetate. it's antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus KCTC 1916 was higher than Manuka oil ointment or other drugs alone. In conclusion, Manuka oil possesses a selective antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus KCTC 1916, and can be used as a potent antibacterial agent against it.

  • The volatile sulfur components from two varieties of radishes ('Taeback' and 'Altali'), obtained by steam distillation and solvent ($CCl_4$) extraction, were isolated and charac-terized by GC/MS analysis. The GC profile of the volatile sulfur com-pounds in the steam distillates from two types of radishes was quite similar. 4-Me-thylpentyl, 3-methylthiopropyl, 4-methylthio-3-butenyl, 4-methylthiobutyl and 5-methyl-thiopentyl isothiocyanates, 5-methylthio-4-pentenenitrile, 1-methylthio-3-pentanone, and dimethyl sulfides were commonly identified. In the $CCl_4$ extract, 4-methylsulfinyl-3-bu-tenyl isothiocyanate was obtained as another major constituent. Whereas 4-methylthiobutyl isothiocyanate was found to be a predominent component in the steam distillate, 4-methylthio-3-butenyl isothiocyananate was a major one in the $C1_4$ extract.
