Electrochemical Frequency Modulation: Solution Resistance and Double Layer Capacitance Considerations

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate total current under steady-state conditions for a material undergoing corrosion using the electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM) technique, taking into account the presence of solution resistance and double layer capacitance. The analysis involving linearization of the Tafel curve allowed for the estimation of corrosion parameters. Results showed that the output signal was dependent on fundamental frequencies and their multiples. In addition, the output signal almost manifested itself at frequencies that were sums of fundamental frequencies of the applied sinusoidal signal. The harmonics calculated showed a significant shift from the principal frequency of input signals. The investigation involved the influence of corrosion current and anode-to-cathode Tafel slope ratio on faradaic and non-faradaic currents (including the average and RMS). The model presented showed both qualitative and quantitative improvements over the previously developed EFM technique that ignored the influence of solution resistance and the double layer capacitance while assuming the applied DC potential corresponded to the corrosion potential of the corroding material.

  • Purpose: This review aims at introducing 3 modeling approaches classified into 3 categories based on the purpose (estimation or prediction), structure (linear or non-linear) and phase (steady-state or dynamic-state); 1) statistical approaches, 2) kinetic modeling and 3) mechanistic modeling. We hope that this review can be a useful guide in the model-based approach of calcium metabolism as well as illustrates an application of engineering tools in studying biosystems. Background: The meaning of biosystems has been expanded, including agricultural/food system as well as biological systems like genes, cells and metabolisms. This expansion has required a useful tool for assessing the biosystems and modeling has arisen as a method that satisfies the current inquiry. To suit for the flow of the era, examining the system which is a little bit far from the traditional biosystems may be interesting issue, which can enlarge our insights and provide new ideas for prospective biosystem-researches. Herein, calcium metabolic models reviewed as an example of application of modeling approaches into the biosystems. Review: Calcium is an essential nutrient widely involved in animal and human metabolism including bone mineralization and signaling pathways. For this reason, the calcium metabolic system has been studied in various research fields of academia and industries. To study calcium metabolism, model-based system analyses have been utilized according to the purpose, subject characteristics, metabolic sites of interest, and experimental design. Either individual metabolic pathways or a whole homeostasis has been modeled in a number of studies.

Efficient Simulation Method for Dielectric Barrier Discharge Load

  • The dielectric barrier discharge is recognized as one of the efficient methods of ultraviolet light generation and ozone production. As well, it is widely utilized for gaseous wastes neutralization and other technological processes in industry. This electrochemical reaction is electrically equivalent to a nonlinear capacitive load that represents some difficulties for designing the power supply. Therefore, a conventional power supply is designed for a drastically simplified model of the load and generally is not optimal. This paper presents a fast simulation approach for the nonlinear capacitive model representation of the dielectric barrier discharge load lamp. The main idea of the proposed method is to use analytical solutions of the differential state equations for the load and find the unknown initial conditions for the steady state by an optimization method. The derived expressions for the analytical solutions are rather complicated, however they greatly reduce the calculation time, which make sense when a deeper analysis is performed. This paper introduces the proposed simulation method and gives some examples of its application such as estimation of the load equivalent parameters and load matching conditions.

  • This paper presents a mechanical sensorless vector-controlled system with parameter identification by the aid of image processor. Based on the flux observer and the model reference adaptive system method, the proposed sensorless system includes rotor speed estimation and stator resistance identification using flux errors. Since the mathematical model of this system is constructed in a synchronously rotating reference frame, a linear model is easily derived for analyzing the system stability, including motor operating state and parameter variations. Because it is difficult to identify rotor resistance simultaneously while estimating rotor speed, a low-accuracy image processor is used to measure the mechanical axis position for calculating the rotor speed at a steady-state operation. The rotor resistance is identified by the error between the estimated speed using the estimated flux and the calculated speed using the image processor. Finally, the validity of this proposed system has been proven through experimentation.

  • This paper presents a feasible development on a highly accurate quick response adjustable speed drive implementation fur general purpose induction motor which operates on the basis of sensorless slip frequency type vector controlled sine-wave PWM inverter with an automatic tuning machine parameter estimation schemes. In the first place, the sensorless vector control theory on the three-phase voltage source-fed inverter induction motor drive system is developed in slip frequency based vector control principle. In particular, the essential procedure and considerations to measure and estimate the exact stator and rotor circuit parameters of general purpose induction motor are discussed under its operating conditions. The speed regulation characteristics of induction motor operated by the three-phase voltage-fed type current controlled PWM inverter using IGBT's is illustrated and evaluated fur machine parameter variations under the actual conditions of low frequency and high frequency operations for the load torque. In the second place, the variable speed induction motor drive system, employing sensorless vector control scheme which is based on three -phase high frequency carrier PWM inverter with automatic toning estimation schemes of the temperature -dependent and -independent machine circuit parameters, is practically implemented using DSP-based controller. Finally, the dynamic speed response performances for largely changed load torque disturbances as well as steady state speed vs. torque characteristics of this induction motor control implementation are illustrated and discussed from an experimental point of view.

Tension Control of a Winding Machine using Time-delay Estimation (시간 지연 추정 기법을 이용한 권취기의 장력 제어 알고리즘)

  • We propose a tension controller based on a time-delay estimation (TDE) technique for a winding machine. Firstly, we perform the necessary calculations to derive a mathematical model of the winding machine. In this sense, it is revealed that the roll radius of the winding machine is characteristically seen to be increasing or decreasing during the winding process. That being said, it is noted that the parameters of the winding machine are coupled and constantly changing during this process. Understandably then, it is noted that the model is shown to be nonlinear and time-varying. Secondly, we propose the way to apply the TDE based controller which is the so-called Time-delay Control (TDC). The TDC utilizes the time-delayed information intentionally to compensate the nonlinear and time-varying characteristics. As we have seen, the proposed controller consists of two parts: one is a TDE component, and the other is an error dynamics component which is defined by a user. In a computer simulation based on the Matlab/Simulink program, the proposed controller is compared with a conventional PID controller, which is widely used in the tension control of the winding machine. The proposed controller reduces the incidence of overshoot and steady-state error in the tension control, as compared to the conventional PID controller.

Modified Direct Torque Control using Algorithm Control of Stator Flux Estimation and Space Vector Modulation Based on Fuzzy Logic Control for Achieving High Performance from Induction Motors

  • Direct torque control based on space vector modulation (SVM-DTC) protects the DTC transient merits. Furthermore, it creates better quality steady-state performance in a wide speed range. The modified method of DTC using SVM improves the electrical magnitudes of asynchronous machines, such as minimizing the stator current distortions, the stator flux with electromagnetic torque without ripple, the fast response of the rotor speed, and the constant switching frequency. In this paper, the proposed method is based on two new control strategies for direct torque control with space vector modulation. First, fuzzy logic control is used instead of the PI torque and a PI flux controller to minimizing the torque error and to achieve a constant switching frequency. The voltages in the direct and quadratic reference frame ($V_d$, $V_q$) are achieved by fuzzy logic control. In this scheme, the switching capability of the inverter is fully utilized, which improves the system performance. Second, the close loop of stator flux estimation based on the voltage model and a low pass filter is used to counteract the drawbacks in the open loop of the stator flux such as the problems saturation and dc drift. The response of this new control strategy is compared with DTC-SVM. The experimental and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed control topology outperforms the conventional DTC-SVM in terms of system robustness and eliminating the bad outcome of dc-offset.

Robust Position Control of One DOF Mechanical Systems Using Dual PIOs Without Velocity Measurement

  • This paper presents a robust position controller for a one degree-of-freedom (DOF) mechanical system using only position measurement. In order to alleviate the performance degradation owing to various uncertainties, a two-stage design method is studied by employing a proportional integral observer (PIO). In the first stage, a baseline backstepping controller is designed for a nominal system without accounting for uncertainties. The PIO is developed for estimating both the velocity information for the backstepping controller and an equivalent input disturbance for a feedforward compensation using the estimated uncertainty. It is shown that the estimation errors with the proposed PIO can be made arbitrarily small in a finite time. If the system suffers from undesirable actuator nonlinearities, however, it might be necessary to estimate the velocity and the disturbance with different rates of convergence. The proposed method combines the predesigned backstepping controller and dual PIOs to reduce mechanical vibrations as well as steady-state errors. The performance of the proposed method is tested through comparative computer simulations and experiments using a laboratory prototype.

  • Recently, condenser tube which is used for a cooling system of automobiles is mainly manufactured by the conform extrusion but this method is inferior as compared with direct extrusion in productivity per the unit time and in the equipment investment. Therefore, it is essential for the conversion of direct extrusion with porthole die. The direct extrusion with porthole die can produce condenser tube which has the competitive power in costs and qualities compared with the existing conform extrusion. This study is designed to evaluate metal flow, welding pressure, extrusion load tendency of mandrel deflection that is affected by variation of porthole shape in porthole die. Estimation is carried out using finite element method under the non-steady state. Also this study was examined into the cause of mandrel fracture through investigating elastic deformation of mandrel during the extrusion.

  • This study investigated the problems in current practice of drive-train resonance analysis procedure and suggested solutions. The first problem is the resonance occurrence at the un-identified resonance point by the current practice, as for a solution the force spectrum analysis for each critical force transmitting component was suggested. The second one is the inaccurate estimation of potential resonance point in eigenfrequency analysis because of the non-consideration about the eigenfrequency dependency on rotor-speed, the fine linearization at each rotor speed point all over operational range was proposed to account for the affection. Lastly the insufficient time for resonance activation under run-up simulation condition was recognized as a problem in resonance load increasing analysis, as an alternative, steady state condition was suggested to estimate the maximum load increasing level.
