Effects of the taper angle and the angular velocity of a pulse tube on the enthalpy flow loss associated with the steady mass streaming were analysis by two-dimensional analysis of a pulse tube with variable cross-section. It was shown that the steady mass flux can lead to a large steady second-order temperature. The enthalpy flow loss associated with the steady mass streaming increases as the angular velocity increases. For a pulse tube where the viscous penetration depth is far thinner than the inner radius, the enthalpy flow loss can be significantly reduced by tapering the pulse tube since both the steady mass flux and the steady second-order temperature decrease as the taper angle increase.
A program of steady-state and transient performance analysis for a 200kW-class small turboshaft engine with free power turbine was developed. An existing turbojet engine was used for the gas generator of the developed turboshaft engine, which was modified to satisfy performance requirements of this turboshaft engine. To verify the accuracy of steady-state performance program for this engine: the program was applied to the gas turbine test unit of the same type, and the analysis results were compared with experimental results. The developed transient performance analysis program using the CMF (Constant Mass Flow) method was utilized to analyze the cases of step increase and ramp increase of the fuel.
We investigate solar flare occurrence rate and daily flare probability depending on McIntosh sunspot classification, its area, and its area change. For this we use the NOAA active region and GOES solar flare data for 15 years (from January 1996 to December 2010). We consider the most flare-productive 10 sunspot classification: 'Dko', 'Dai', 'Eai', 'Fai', 'Dki', 'Dkc', 'Eki', 'Ekc', 'Fki', and 'Fkc'. Sunspot area and its change can be a proxy of magnetic flux and its emergence/cancellation, respectively. we classify each sunspot group into two sub-groups: 'Large' and 'Small'. In addition, for each group, we classify it into three sub-groups according to sunspot group area change: 'Decrease', 'Steady', and 'Increase'. As a result, in the case of compact groups, their flare occurrence rates and daily flare probabilities noticeably increase with sunspot group area. We also find that the flare occurrence rates and daily flare probabilities for the 'Increase' sub-groups are noticeably higher than those for the other sub-groups. In case of the (M+X)-class flares of 'Dkc' group, the flare occurrence rate of the 'Increase' sub-group is three times higher than that of the 'Steady' sub-group. Mean flare occurrence rates and flare probabilities for all sunspot regions increase with the following order: 'Steady', 'Decrease', and 'Increase'. Our results statistically demonstrate that magnetic flux and its emergence enhance major solar flare occurrence. We are going to forecast solar flares based on these results and NOAA scale.

The steady drift forces on a barge in waves are investigated. The steady drift forces due to a near-field method which is based on direct integration of the pressure acting on the submerged surface of barge are compared with those due to far-field method which is based on the theory of momentum conservation. Numerical results of the linear motions are compared with the experimental and numercal ones which was submitted in the literature. A convergence of the steady drift forces according to the increase of the number of panels which represent the submerged surface are discussed.
The numerical procedure to analyze a non-steady 3-dimensional elastohydrodynamic lubrication on the cyclically loaded contact has been newly developed. The procedure was applied on the cam-roller contact of the valve mechanism for the marine diesel engine. Both the pressure distribution and the film thickness between the cam and roller follower were calculated for each time step of the whole cycle. The pressure spike is shown at the outlet of the roller edge and it is getting higher as the external load is increased. The film thicknesses in the result of the non-steady analysis have a tendency to increase compared to those in the result of the analysis with the assumption of steady state. Therefore, the surface roughness of the non-steady contact need not be limited below that of the steady contact of the equivalent operating conditions.
We investigate the solar flare and CME occurrence rate and probability depending on sunspot class and its area change. These CMEs are front-side, partial and full halo CMEs associated with X-ray flares. For this we use the Solar Region Summary(SRS) from NOAA, NGDC flare catalog, and SOHO/LASCO CME catalog for 16 years (from January 1996 to December 2011). We classify each sunspot class into two sub-groups: "Large" and "Small". In addition, for each class, we classify it into three sub-groups according to sunspot class area change: "Decrease", "Steady", and "Increase". In terms of sunspot class area, the solar flare and CME occurrence probabilities noticeably increase at compact and large sunspot groups (e.g., 'Fkc'). In terms of sunspot area change, solar flare and CME occurrence probabilities for the "Increase" sub-groups are noticeably higher than those for the other sub-groups. For example, in case of the (M+X)-class flares of 'Dkc' class, the flare occurrence probability of the "Increase" sub-group is three times higher than that of the "Steady" sub-group. In case of the 'Eai' class, the CME occurrence probability of the "Increase" sub-groups is five time higher than that of the "Steady" sub-group. Our results demonstrate statistically that magnetic flux and its emergence enhance solar flare and CME occurrence, especially for compact and large sunspot groups.

The flow characteristics of developing turbulent steady flow are investigated numerically and experimentally in the entrance region of a square duct ($40 mm{\times}40 mm$ and 4, 000 mm). The numerical anaysis are incorporated by finite- volume discretization with staggered grid system and SIMPLE algorithm. The numerical solution are compared with experimental results of mean velocity profiles, turbulence intensity and entrance length. For turbulent steady flow, the turbulent components in the velocity waveforms increase as the dimensionless transverse position approaches the wall. Thrbulence intensity increases as the dimensionless transverse position increases from the center to the wall of the duct for the developing turbulent steady flows. The entrance length of the turbulent steady flow is about 40 times as large as the hydraulic diameter under the present experimental condition.

The health effects of environmental and occupational exposure to steady magnetic fields is a matter of concern. The aim of this study was to evaluate the hematologic effects of exposure to steady magnetic fields at the electrolysis unit of a Copper complex. The population under study was the workers of the electrolysis unit of the copper refinery. The average steady magnetic field in the exposure group was 2.5 mT. The blood indices of workers exposure to steady magnetic fields after adjusting for confounders showed decreased white blood cells (except neutrophils) and increase in the number and volume of platelets. Red blood cells did not show any significant difference. Exposure to steady magnetic fields even in proposed safe limits may have hematologic effects on humans. There is a necessity for more research about the safe doses of exposure to magnetic fields.
Quantity and composition of biogas from semi-continuous anaerobic digestion of straw were obtained experimentally in laboratory scale digesters fed with 1 liter of 5% straw-water mixture and maintained at 35$^{\circ}C$. Experiments were carried out for hydraulic retention time(HRT) of 8, 10 and 15days, respectively. The amount and composition of biogas produced were measured until steady-state was achieved for each run. The amount of biogas and methane percent go through a maximum and decrease continuously towards the steady-state after three times operation of hydraulic retention time(HRT). Methane gas production rates at steady-state increase with the increasing of HRT. Biogas production of 0.45 liter/day with 25% methane, 0.42 liter/day with 33.7% methane and 0.492 liter/day with 31.7% methane were obtained for 8, 10 and 15days of HRT, respectively. The high proportion of soluble carbohydrates present in straw makes the volatile fatty acids to build up within the digester causing a drop in pH that inhibits digestion. Regular control of pH is therefore necessary by adding alkalinity. Reductions in COD increase with increase in HRT. The stratification of plant material within the digester is different from that of manure, and modifications in design and operation of digesters may be necessary if they are fed with plant matter.
Using a strain-controlled rheometer [Rheometrics Dynamic Analyzer (RDA II)], the steady shear flow properties of a semi-solid ointment base (vaseline) have been measured over a wide range of shear rates at temperature range of $25{\sim}60^{\circ}C$. In this article, the steady shear flow properties (shear stress, steady shear viscosity and yield stress) were reported from the experimentally obtained data and the effects of shear rate as well as temperature on these properties were discussed in detail. In addition, several inelastic-viscoplastic flow models including a yield stress parameter were employed to make a quantitative evaluation of the steady shear flow behavior, and then the applicability of these models was examined by calculating the various material parameters (yield stress, consistency index and flow behavior index). Main findings obtained from this study can be summarized as follows : (1) At temperature range lower than $40^{\circ}C$, vaseline is regarded as a viscoplastic material having a finite magnitude of yield stress and its flow behavior beyond a yield stress shows a shear-thinning (or pseudo-plastic) feature, indicating a decrease in steady shear viscosity as an increase in shear rate. At this temperature range, the flow curve of vaseline has two inflection points and the first inflection point occurring at relatively lower shear rate corresponds to a static yield stress. The static yield stress of vaseline is decreased with increasing temperature and takes place at a lower shear rate, due to a progressive breakdown of three dimensional network structure. (2) At temperature range higher than $45^{\circ}C$, vaseline becomes a viscous liquid with no yield stress and its flow character exhibits a Newtonian behavior, demonstrating a constant steady shear viscosity regardless of an increase in shear rate. With increasing temperature, vaseline begins to show a Newtonian behavior at a lower shear rate range, indicating that the microcrystalline structure is completely destroyed due to a synergic effect of high temperature and shear deformation. (3) Over a whole range of temperatures tested, the Herschel-Bulkley, Mizrahi-Berk, and Heinz-Casson models are all applicable and have an almostly equivalent ability to quantitatively describe the steady shear flow behavior of vaseline, whereas the Bingham, Casson, and Vocadlo models do not give a good ability.
