In case of small motors, coil bundle occupies a large portion of stator in view of mass and volume as well as dynamics. It is observed through modal test on the stator of an IPM BLDC (interior permanent magnet brushless direct current) motor that coil bundle wound on the stator core causes the first and second natural frequencies to decrease by about 20-30% compared with those of bare stator. Especially the third natural frequency is newly observed below 3 KHz, which is not observed on the bare stator. It is found that at the third mode the end-coil and the core vibrate out of phase in radial direction. In this paper, the stator is dynamically modeled in terms of the core and the coil bundle consisting of the end-coil and the slot coil based on the above observations for the prediction of dynamic properties. The core can easily be modeled using finite element method with its actual material properties and geometric shape. The concept of equivalent bending stiffness is used for modeling of the end-coil so that predictions may match with the measured natural frequencies for the end-coil cut out of the stator. Although the same concept can be applied to the slot coil, separation of the slot coil from the stator is impractical. Therefore, equivalent bending stiffness of the slot coil is determined through iterative comparisons with the measurements of natural frequencies of the stator with the slot coil in it.
In this study, the wind-mill type ultrasonic motor was fabricated, and then resonant frequency and vibration velocity characteristics of the stator were measured. Brass metal was pressed with umbrella-type using metal mold, then slot of 4 kind was processed in each of thickness. Among sixteen's stators, resonant frequency on vibration velocity was decreased remarkably in stator of higher resonant point, but resonant frequency on vibration velocity wasn't almost changed at lower resonant point of stator. The thickener thickness of elastic body, vibration velocity was decreased. The more slot of elastic body, vibration velocity was increased Applied voltage was changed from 10$V_{max}$ to 100$V_{max}$. Maximum vibration velocity value was 2.0[m/s].
In hydro-generator, a groundwall insulation of stator windings gradually deteriorates due to mechanical, thermal, electrical and environmental stresses. These stresses combine to result in loose windings, delamination of the stator insulation and/or electrical tracking of the endwinding, all of which can lead to stator insulation failures. Conventionally, off-line tests such as partial discharge measurement, DC/AC current and .DELTA.tan.delta. tests has been used for estimation of winding condition. However, off-line test requires large power supply and generator outage. In addition, major cause of insulation problems such as loose wedges and slot dischages may not be found with off-line diagnoses. This paper introduces the on-line partial discharge measurement techniques using frequency spectrum analyzer(FSA) for the generator stator windings. The experimental results from the UIAM #1 hydro-generator confirms a optimistic application of on-line generator diagnosis method as a reliable tool for evaluation of winding condition.
This paper presents the acoustic noise and mechanical vibration reduction of a coreless brushless DC motor with an air dynamic bearing used in a digital lightening processor. The coreless brushless DC motor does not have a stator yoke or stator slot to remove the unbalanced force caused by the interaction between the stator yoke and the rotor magnet. An unbalanced force makes slotless brushless DC motors vibrate and mechanically noisy, and the attractive force between the magnet and the stator yoke increases power consumption. Also, when a coreless brushless DC motor is driven by a $120^{\circ}$ conduction type inverter, high frequency acoustic noise occurs because of the peak components of the phase currents caused by small phase inductance and large phase resistance. In this paper, a core-less brushless DC motor with an air dynamic bearing to remove mechanical vibration and to reduce power consumption is applied to a digital lightening processor. A $180^{\circ}$ conduction type inverter drives it to reduce high frequency acoustic noise. The applied methods are simulated and tested using a manufactured prototype motor with an air dynamic bearing. The experimental results show that a coreless brushless DC motor has characteristics of low power consumption, low mechanical vibration, and low high frequency acoustic noise.
A lot of R&D on the diagnosis of stator winding insulation for large rotating machines has been carried out since the 1970s. The on-line partial discharge measurement has proved to be an effective technique in the evaluation of the state of stator insulation in high voltage rotating machines. It is well known that if the discharge pulses propagate through the winding conductor, they are attenuated and delayed. In the present study, to investigate the attenuation and the time delay of discharge pulses through the winding conductor, a series of tests were conducted using a model coils and slot. Thus it could be concluded that while the high frequency pulse propagates in radiation or end-winding coupling modes, the low frequency one does in a series mode through the coil conductor.
In this paper, a novel Generator On-line Diagnosis System (GODS) is proposed. This system monitors the insulation condition of the stator winding by on-line measurements of partial discharge (PD). Sensor, such as SSC (Stator Slot Coupler) and RFCT (Radio Frequency Current Transformer) are used for PD measurement. PD signals are continuously measured and digitized with a high speed A/D converter to build the database of the generator's insulation condition. Also this system can communicate with the central monitoring system via RS-485. This helps more efficient operation and maintenance of the generator.
The objective of this research is to utilize the ultrasonic method to analyze the property of partial discharge (PD) which is generated by the winding of the insulation stator in the generator. Therefore, a PD measurement system is built based on ultrasonic and virtual instruments. Three types of PD models (internal PD model, surface PD model and slot PD model) have been constructed. With the analysis of these experimental results, this research has identified the ultrasonic signals of the discharges which were produced by three types of PD models. This analysis shows the different features among these PD types. Both the time domain and frequency domain of the ultrasonic signals are obviously different. In addition, an experiment based on a large rotating machine has been done to analyze ultrasonic noises. The result indicates that the ultrasonic noises can be wiped off by the filters and algorithms. The application of this system is convenient for the detection of early signs of insulation failure, which is an effective method for diagnosis of insulation faults.

In the stator windings of a 6.6 kV rotating machine, internal discharges, slot discharges, and surface discharges are mainly caused by internal voids and insulation degradation. If a partial discharge(PD) occurs in an inner-part of the stator windings, it will cause electromagnetic pulses with wide frequency ranges. Discharge sparks and electromagnetic pulses generated from a discharge source, can be detected using various RF resonators like an EM sensor. In order to detect these types of electromagnetic sources, a planar patch sensor was designed and fabricated using a CST-MWS simulation, and PD signals from an artificially defected stator winding were also measured by the sensor proposed in this study. Furthermore, an HFCT was used as a reference sensor and compared with the proposed new planar patch sensor. In the results of the experiment, the planar patch sensor showed a similar performance to the HFCT sensor.
This paper presents the reduction of acoustic noise generated by electromagnetic force in an induction motor of the electrical forklift. After summarizing the electromagnetic excitation forces due to the interaction between the stator/rotor slot permeance and the stator winding magnetomotive force, the effects of the electromagnetic force on the noise and vibration of an induction motor are analyzed. In order to experimentally identify the noise sources of the motor, the signal analyses for noise and vibration are performed by using waterfall plots of noise and vibration spectrums. It is found that severe noise and vibration are caused by the electromagnetic force when the mode number of the excitation shape for a stator is low. Furthermore, it is verified that the motor noise is amplified if the excitation frequency of the electromagnetic force coincides with one of the natural frequencies of the stator. It is experimentally demonstrated that this severe noise can be considerably reduced by structure modifications. Finally, some design guidelines are suggested to develop an induction motor with a low level of noise.
