상관분석과 회귀분석을 이용한 논문의 통계활용 분석 (Analysis on Reports of Statistical Testings for Correlation and Regression)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to examine the accuracy and adequacy of research papers reporting statistical testings for correlation and regression. Method: Original research articles utilized correlation and regression analysis were reviewed from the Korean Journal of Women Health Nursing published from the year 2004 to 2006. Thirty-six papers were evaluated in accordance with formatted criteria in respect to an inclusiveness of research title, accuracy of statistical methods and presentation styles, and errors in reporting statistical outcomes. Result: Thirty articles (83.3%) utilized Pearson's correlational analysis, and ten articles did regression analysis. Lack of accurate understanding and interpretation of the statistical method was a main fault. Basic assumptions and diagnostic testings for each statistical method were not performed or described in most of the studies. Some points like consistency of research questions with statistical methods and criteria for sample size were still left out in part. Details of the presentation in the reporting of outcomes were not complied with the guidelines, which need careful concerns of the writers. Errors in English of result tables were found in more than one third of the tables. Conclusion: The outcome would be reflected in the submission guidelines for future writers. To reach the level comparable with internationally recognized nursing journals, concrete knowledge to apply statistical methods should be ensured in the processes of submission, reviews, and editing.

통계적 기법을 이용한 국지성집중호우의 이동경로 분석 (Rainstorm Tracking Using Statistical Analysis Method)

  • Although the rainstorm causes local damage on large scale, it is difficult to predict the movement of the rainstorm exactly. In order to reduce the rainstorm damage of the rainstorm, it is necessary to analyze the path of the rainstorm using various statistical methods. In addition, efficient time interval of rainfall observation for the analysis of the rainstorm movement can be derived by applying various statistical methods to rainfall data. In this study, the rainstorm tracking using statistical method is performed for various types of rainfall data. For the tracking of the rainstorm, the methods of temporal distribution, inclined Plane equations, and cross correlation were applied for various types of data including electromagnetic rainfall gauge data and AWS data. The speed and direction of each method were compared with those of real rainfall movement. In addition, the effective time interval of rainfall observation for the analysis of the rainstorm movement was also investigated for the selected time intervals 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 minutes. As a result, the absolute relative errors of the method of inclined plane equations are smaller than those of other methods in case of electromagnetic rainfall gauges data. The absolute relative errors of the method of cross correlation are smaller than those of other methods in case of AWS data. The absolute relative errors of 30 minutes or less than 30 minutes are smaller than those of other time intervals.

대한흉부외과학회지에 게재된 통계적 분석에 관한 고찰 (Present Statistical Status in Papers in the Korean Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

  • From January 1983 to December 1992, There were 1441 papers in the Korean Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Among these papers, 783[54.3%] were original article or clinical analysis and 652[45.2%] were case reports. A total of 319 papers contained some statistical analysis. In 150 cases[47.0%] of these 319 papers, the statistical description was insufficient. Of the correctly described papers, 115[68%] had more than one statistical error. Of course, in many cases the errors were not considered to be severe, but they were often sufficient to raise doubts about some inferences. We suggest that authors should be more careful when they describe and apply statistical methods. If possible, authors should interpret results with statistical specialists. And we also suggest that our society have more extensive statistical refereeing system. This would at least prevent the worst errors from appearing in print. The last suggestion is elementary instruction in statistical methods during preclinical training.

  • Crossover design is officially except for special occasions recommended by KFDA and FDA for assessing Bioequivalence between two drugs one for reference and the other for innovator. Such design is regarded as a special case of latin square split-polt or repeated measurement design and its main difference with other designing methods is that each subject in an experiment is exposed two drugs in sequence. Therefore general statistical analysis is not suitable since the model for this experiment includes carryover effect in addition to period and sequence effect. in this paper analysis for crossover model with two drugs and its interpretation are mainly discussed and an example is given for illustration.

  • Computational algorithms to calculate M-estimators and rank estimators of regression parameters from left-truncated and right-censored data are developed herein. In the case of M-estimators, new statistical methods are also introduced to incorporate leverage assements and concomitant scale estimation in the presence of left truncation and right censoring on the observed response. Furthermore, graphical methods to examine the residuals from these data are presented. Two real data sets are used for illustration.

Semiparametric Inference for a Multistate Stochastic Survival Model

  • In this paper, we consider a multistate survival model which incorporates covariates and contains two illness states and two death states. The underlying stochastic process is assumed to follow nonhomogeneous Markov process. The estimates of survival, transition and competing risks probabilities are given via the methods of partial likelihood and nonparametric maximum likelihood. Our discussion is based on the statistical theory of counting process. An illustration is given to the data of patients in a heart transplant program. The goodness of fit procedures are also discussed to check the adequacy of the model.

  • In this paper, we reviewed thirteen methods for finding confidence intervals for he mean of poisson distribution. Bootstrap confidence intervals are also introduced. Two bootstrap confidence intervals are compared with the other existing eleven confidence intervals by using Monte Carlo simulation with respect to the average coverage probability of Woodroofe and Jhun (1989).

An Identification of Outlying Cells in Contingency Table via Correspondence Analysis Map

  • When an appropriate model is fitted to explain a certain categorical data, outlying cell detection plays very important role to reduce the lack of fit. There exist many statistical methods to identify outlying cells in contingency table. In this paper, correspondence analysis is applied to identify one or two outlying cells. When corresponding relationships between categories of the row and columns are explored, we find that outlying cells could be identified via the correspondence analysis map.

Hidden Truncation Normal Regression

  • In this paper, we propose regression methods based on the likelihood function. We assume Arnold-Beaver Skew Normal(ABSN) errors in a simple linear regression model. It was shown that the novel method performs better with an asymmetric data set compared to the usual regression model with the Gaussian errors. The utility of a novel method is demonstrated through simulation and real data sets.

A Comparison of Influence Diagnostics in Linear Mixed Models

  • Standard estimation methods for linear mixed models are sensitive to influential observations. However, tools and concepts for linear mixed model diagnostics are rudimentary until now and research is heavily demanded in linear mixed models. In this paper, we consider two diagnostics to evaluate the effects of individual observations in the estimation of fixed effects for linear mixed models. Those are Cook's distance and COVRATIO. Results of our limited simulation study suggest that the Cook's distance is not good statistical quantity in linear mixed models. Also calibration point for COVRATIO seems to be quite conservative.
