  • Introduction: This systematic review evaluated the use of buffered versus non-buffered lidocaine to increase the efficacy of inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB). Materials and Methods: Randomized, double-blinded studies from PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, and ProQuest were identified. Two of the authors assessed the studies for risk of bias. Outcomes included onset time, injection pain on a visual analog scale (VAS), percentage of painless injections, and anesthetic success rate of IANB. Results: The search strategy yielded 19 references. Eleven could be included in meta-analyses. Risk of bias was unclear in ten and high in one study. Buffered lidocaine showed 48 seconds faster onset time (95% confidence interval [CI], -42.06 to -54.40; P < 0.001) and 5.0 units lower (on a scale 0-100) VAS injection pain (95% CI, -9.13 to -0.77; P=0.02) than non-buffered. No significant difference was found on percentage of people with painless injection (P = 0.059), nor success rate (P = 0.290). Conclusion: Buffered lidocaine significantly decreased onset time and injection pain (VAS) compared with non-buffered lidocaine in IANB. However due to statistical heterogeneity and low sample size, quality of the evidence was low to moderate, additional studies with larger numbers of participants and low risk of bias are needed to confirm these results.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the influences of camphoroquinone on the properties of five experimental composites. The contents of camphoroquinone were varied as 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4%, 0.5%, and 0.6%, with silanized filler 75% and tertiary amine 0.2%. Five kinds of experimental composites were prepared, and diametral tensile strength, shear bond strength, depth of cure and yellowish discoloration were tested as a measurement. Specimen numbers of 10 were applied to all test items and experimental groups. Specimens for testing the diametral tensile strengths with internal diameter of 6mm in diameter and 3mm in height were filled with 5 experimental composites which were crushed with 1mm/min cross-head speed on Instron universal testing machine (Model No. 4467). Shear bond strength was measured on specimens attached to bovine teeth enamel etched with 37% phosphoric acid. Depth of cure was measured by the measurement of height of specimens which were removed the un-polymerized portion with acetone. Yellowness measurements were made by chromometer(Minolta Co. Japan) using L$^*$a$^*$b$^*$ values. ANOVA and Multiple range tests were used analyzed data with confidence level at 95%. The mean value of the shear bond strengths ranged from 31.03MPa to 39.49MPa. Following results were obtained ; 1. Diametral tensile strength was highest in experimental group 3, then was not affected by the contents of camphoroquinone ($r^2$=0.0422). 2. Composite resins containing 0.4% camphoroquinone showed the highest shear bond strength, but there was no statistical significance (p=0.3718). 3. Camphoroquinone reduces the depth of cure in the composite resins (p=0.0004, $r^2$=0.9483). 4. Camphoroquinone made the composites yellowish ($r^2$=0.9815). These results mean that increased content of camphoroquinone reduces the depth of cure, and that camphoroquinone make composites yellowish.

  • Bioequivalence of two clarithromycin tablets, the $Klaricid^{TM}$ (Ciba-Geigy Korea Ltd., Seoul, Korea) and the LG clarithromycin (LG Chemical Co., Ltd., Seoul, Korea), was evaluated according to the Korean Guidelines for Bioequivalence Test (KGBT 1998). Sixteen normal male volunteers $(20{\sim}26\;years\;old)$ were randomly divided into two groups and a randomized $2{\times}2$ cross-over study was employed. After one tablet containing 250 mg of clarithromycin was orally administered, blood sample was taken at predetennined time intervals, and the concentrations of clarithromycin in serum were detennined using HPLC method with electrochemical detector. The pharmacokinetic parameters $(AUC_t,\;C_{max}\;and\; T_{max})$ were calculated and ANOVA was utilized for the statistical analysis of parameters. The results showed that the differences in $AUC_t$, $C_{max}$, and $T_{max}$ between two tablets based on $Klaricid^{TM}$ tablet were 4.06%,2.67% and -9.70%, respectively. The powers $(1-{\beta})$ for $AUC_t$, $C_{max}$ and $T_{max}$ were 83.53%, 92.34% and 96.64%, respectively. Detectable differences $({\Delta})$ and 90 % confidence intervals $(a=0.05) $were all less than ${\pm}20%$. All the parameters above met the criteria of KGBT 1998, indicating that LG clarithromycin tablet is bioequivalent to $Klaricid^{TM}$ tablet.

  • This study is focused on user awareness of avatar character in the cyber space. The purpose of this study is to investigate user preference toward avatar and test their awareness on it. The awareness of avatar is based on the applied degree of self-awareness, and also analyzed by factors using 3 elements such as loyalty, value and confidence in Maurice Wagner's study but self-projection was added to these three variables. The result shows that there is no significant statistical difference among response groups for age and sex classification but the preference and the value variables are significantly dependent on sex and age, respectively. There are strong correlation among each response variables for the awareness of avatar character and the loyalty and the preference variables are mostly correlated. The regression analysis shows that the preference of avatar is mostly affected by loyalty and thus the self awareness of avatar in the Cyberspace is proportional to user preference. It is shown that users do not awareness an avatar as a visual image but identify their avatar as an another selfness since they project themselves into those avatars.

  • Linear mixed models are commonly used in the clinical pharmaceutical studies to analyze repeated measures such as the crossover study data of bioequivalence studies. In these models, random effects describe the correlation between repeated outcomes and variance-covariance matrix explain within-subject variabilities. Bioequivalence analysis verifies whether a 90% confidence interval for geometric mean ratio of Cmax and AUC between reference drug and test drug is included in the bioequivalence margin [0.8, 1.25] performed using linear mixed models with period, sequence and treatment effects as fixed and sequence nested subject effects as random. A Levofloxacin study is referred to for an example of real data analysis.

  • Background: Lower-limb varicose veins (VVs) are common and known to have a higher prevalence among people who work in occupations requiring prolonged standing. In the Republic of Korea, however, VV-related occupational factors have seldom been examined. This study was conducted to assess the prevalence of VVs among nurses, an occupational group considered to be at high risk of VVs, and determine the occupational risk factors of prolonged standing. Methods: Between March and August 2014, a questionnaire survey coupled with Doppler ultrasonography was conducted on the nurses working at a university hospital. Results: A total of 414 nurses participated in the survey and diagnostic testing. From the survey analysis and test results, the prevalence of VVs in nurses was estimated to be 16.18%. Significant factors for venous reflux were age [odds ratio (OR) = 1.06, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.03-1.10], pregnancy (OR = 2.15, 95% CI = 1.17-3.94), and delivery (OR = 2.02, 95% CI = 1.08-3.78). The statistical significance of these factors was verified after risk adjustment for sociodemographic factors (OR = 3.40, 95% CI = 1.27-9.09). Conclusion: Factors significantly associated with venous reflux were increasing age and prolonged working hours (${\geq}4hours$) in a standing position (OR = 2.80, 95% CI = 1.08-7.25), even after risk adjustment for sociodemographic factors. This study is significant in that an objective diagnosis of VVs preceded the analysis of the risk factors for VV incidence, thus verifying objectively that VVs are associated with occupations requiring prolonged hours of working in a standing position.

  • This study has tried to develop the modified DRASTIC Model by supplying the parameters, such as structural lineament density and landuse, into conventional DRASTIC model, and to predict the potential of groundwater contamination using GIS in Whanam 2 Area, Gyeonggi Province, Korea. Since the aquifers in Korea is generally through the joints of rock-mass in hydrogeological environment, lineament density affects to the behavior of groundwater and contaminated plumes directly, and land-use reflect the effect of point or non-point source of contamination indirectly. For the statistical analysis, lattice layers of each parameter were generated, and then level of confidence was assessed by analyzing each correlation coefficient. Composite contamination map was achieved as a final result by comparing modified DRASTIC potential and the amount of generation load of several contaminant sources logically. The result could suggest the predictability of the area of contamination potential on the respects of hydrogeological aspect and water quality.
