This paper considers a problem of classification of variable stars based on functional data analysis. For a better understanding of galaxy structure and stellar evolution, various approaches for classification of variable stars have been studied. Several features that explain the characteristics of variable stars (such as color index, amplitude, period, and Fourier coefficients) were usually used to classify variable stars. Excluding other factors but focusing only on the curve shapes of variable stars, Deb and Singh (2009) proposed a classification procedure using multivariate principal component analysis. However, this approach is limited to accommodate some features of the light curve data that are unequally spaced in the phase domain and have some functional properties. In this paper, we propose a light curve estimation method that is suitable for functional data analysis, and provide a classification procedure for variable stars that combined the features of a light curve with existing functional data analysis methods. To evaluate its practical applicability, we apply the proposed classification procedure to the data sets of variable stars from the project STellar Astrophysics and Research on Exoplanets (STARE).
The concept of performance based seismic design has been gradually accepted by the earthquake engineering profession recently, in which the cost-effectiveness criterion is one of the most important principles and more attention is paid to the structural performance at the inelastic stage. Since there are many uncertainties in seismic design, reliability analysis is a major task in performance based seismic design. However, structural reliability analysis may be very costly and time consuming because the limit state function is usually a highly nonlinear implicit function with respect to the basic design variables, especially for the complex large-scale structures for dynamic and nonlinear analysis. Understanding statistical properties of the structural inelastic deformation, which is the aim of the present paper, is helpful to develop an efficient approximate approach of reliability analysis. The present paper studies the statistical properties of the maximum elastoplastic story drift of steel frames subjected to earthquake load. The randomness of earthquake load, dead load, live load, steel elastic modulus, yield strength and structural member dimensions are considered. Possible probability distributions for the maximum story are evaluated using K-S test. The results show that the choice of the probability distribution for the maximum elastoplastic story drift of steel frames is related to the mean value of the maximum elastoplastic story drift. When the mean drift is small (less than 0.3%), an extreme value type I distribution is the best choice. However, for large drifts (more than 0.35%), an extreme value type II distribution is best.
Constructs with seven latent evaluation indicators and 18 observable survey questions were developed by food and nutrition experts to calculate a food safety recognition and practice index for children. The purpose of this study was to suggest statistical approaches to test construction validity on the constructs, obtain weights of the evaluation indicators, and develop questionnaires to calculate a children's food recognition and practice index. Survey data of 2,400 elementary fifth grade students were used as empirical results. Test validity was evaluated by exploratory factor analysis and confirmed to be highly significant by confirmatory factor analysis [i.e., linear structural relations (LISREL) analysis]. Standardized path coefficients of the LISREL analysis were suggested based on weights, and the weights were compared using the AHP and Delphi methods.

To determine the effective factors for microparticle blasting with precise sequence position control in the x-axis and y-axis directions, we conducted a statistical experimental analysis of blasted square shapes by considering five condition factors. The control input and output were operated simultaneously by rotation-linear motion conversion and fine particles were blasted onto the aluminum specimen by precise position control driving using multiple execution codes. The micro-driving device used for processing was capable of microparticle blasting and of controlling the system through contact with a limit sensor at high speed and a two-degree-of-freedom driving mechanism. Our experiments were conducted on 1,050 specimens of pure aluminum (containing <1% of other elements). The effects of several factors (e.g., particle and nozzle diameters, blasting pressure, and federate and blasting cycle numbers) on the surface roughness and blasted surface's depth were verified through a statistical experimental analysis by applying the dispersion analysis method. This statistical analysis revealed that the nozzle diameter, the blasting pressure, and the blasting cycle number were the dominant factors.
The gametogenic cycle and the spawning season in female and male Cyclina sinensis were investigated by quantitative statistical analysis using an image analyzer system, and the biological minimum size (the size at 50% of sexual maturity) was calculated by combination of quantitative data by size and von Bertalanffy's equation. Compared the gametogenic cycle by quantitative statistical analysis with the previous qualitative results in female and male C. sinensis, monthly changes in female and male gametogenic cycles calculated by quantitative statistical analysis showed similar patterns to the gonadal stages in female and male reproductive cycles by qualitative histological analysis. Comparisons of monthly changes in the portions (%) of each area to eight kinds of areas by quantitative statistical analysis in the gonads in female and male C. sinensis are as follows. Monthly changes in the portions (%) of the ovary areas to total tissue areas in females and also monthly changes in the portions of the testis areas to total tissue areas in males increased in March and reached the maximum in May, and then showed a rapid decrease from June to October. Monthly changes in the portions (%) of oocyte areas to ovarian tissue areas in females and also monthly changes in the portions of the areas of the spermatogenic stages to testis areas in males began to increase in March and reached the maximum in June in females and males, and then rapidly dropped from July to October in females and males when spawnig occurred. From these data, it is apparent that the number of spawning seasons in female and male C. sinensis occurred once per year, from July to October. Monthly changes in the number of the oocytes per mm2 and in the mean diameter of the oocyte in captured image which were calculated for each female slide showed a maximum in May and reached the minimum from December to February. Therefore, C. sinensis in both sexes showed a unimodal gametogenic cycle during the year. The percentage of sexual maturity of female and male clams ranging from 25.1 to 30.0 mm in length was over 50% and 100% for clams over 40.1 mm length. In this study, the biological minimum size (sexually mature shell lengths at 50% of sexual maturity) in females and males were 26.85 and 26.28 mm, respectively.

This paper presents a dynamic development of an ontology-based statistical information system supporting the collection, storage, processing, analysis, and the presentation of statistical knowledge at the national scale. To accomplish this, we propose a data mining technique to dynamically collect data relating to citizens from publicly available data sources; the collected data will then be structured, classified, categorized, and integrated into an ontology. Moreover, an intelligent platform is proposed in order to generate quantitative and qualitative statistical information based on the knowledge stored in the ontology. The main aims of our proposed system are to digitize administrative tasks and to provide reliable statistical information to governmental, economic, and social actors. The authorities will use the ontology-based statistical information system for strategic decision-making as it easily collects, produces, analyzes, and provides both quantitative and qualitative knowledge that will help to improve the administration and management of national political, social, and economic life.
With the ease availability of statistical software and powerful computers the application of statistical methods in domestic veterinary journals is on the increase. In parallel with this benefit, statistical errors are not uncommon even in renowned scientific and medical journals. These errors may lead to misinterpretation of the data, thereby, subjected to faulty conclusions. A systematic review of articles published in 8 issues of the Journal of Veterinary Clinics during 2006-2007 was performed to assess the statistical methodology and reporting. Ninety-four (72.9%) articles of the 129 original articles screened included any inferential statistical analysis in the article, including comparison of 3 or more groups (53 or 56.4%), comparison of independent 2 groups (40 or 42.6%), and paired t-test (9 or 9.6%) in order. Of the 94 articles in which statistical analysis was done 62 (or 66.0%) had at least 1 statistical error. Errors included failure to apply or incorrectly applying independent Student's t-test for paired data or vice versa, inappropriate use of t-test for more than 3 groups and failure in chi-square test to consider continuity-correction for small expected frequencies. The common errors in ANOVA were failure to validate assumption of the test, inappropriate post-hoc multiple-comparison and incorrect assumption of independence of data in repeated measures design. Reporting errors included failure to state statistical methods and failure to state specific test if more than 1 test was done. It is suggested that an editorial effort would be necessary to achieve the improvement of appropriate statistical procedures through the publication of statistical guidelines to author(s).
This study aims to investigate students' statistical thinking through statistical processes in different instructional settings: Teacher-centered instruction vs. student-centered learning. We first developed instructional materials that allowed students to experience all the processes of statistics, including data collection, data analysis, data representation, and interpretation of the results. Using the instructional materials for four classes, we collected and analyzed the data from 57 seventh graders' discourse and artifacts from two different instructional settings using the analytic framework generated on the basis of literature review. The results showed that students felt difficulty particularly in the process of data collection and graph representations. In addition, even though data description has been heavily emphasized for data analysis in statistics education, it is surprisingly discovered that students had a hard time to understand the relationship between data and representations. Also, there were relationships between students' statistical thinking and instructional settings. Even though both groups of students showed difficulty in data collection and graph representations of the data, there were significant differences between the groups in terms of their performance. Whereas students from student-centered learning class outperformed in making decisions considering verification and justification, students from teacher-centered lecture class did better in problems requiring accuracy than the counterpart. The results from the study provide meaningful implications on developing curriculum and instructional methods for statistics education.

In order to estimate furture consumtive use, some statistical characteristics of 22-year pan evaporation data at four selected stations were calculated in this study. Districal distribution, trend analysis and time-series, statistical and periodic analysis for annual, monethly and ten-day values were performed in the statistical analysis. The stations are Seoul, Taeku, Jeonju and Mokpo for monthly data, and Suweon data are compared to the reported Penman values. The results are as followed: 1. Annual evaporation ranged to 990-1,375mm varying with the locations of the stations. The Districal distribution of evaporation in the Republic is shown in Fig. 1. 2. The trend analysis for annual evaporation resulted in detail in Table 2 and Fig. 2, through simple moving average methods. The results show relatively short-period data of about 10 years would be acceptable for field use. 3. The means and dispersions of monthly evaporation at four stations are detailed in Table 3. 4. The monthly evaporation approached to the trend of normal distribution Fig. 3 showed the examples of normal distribution for each typical monthly data. 5. The correlograms detailed in Fig. 4, shows the time-series characteristics of monthly evaporation, whose periodic term should be twelve months. 6. The periodic analysis for monthly evapolation results in Table 4. Fig. 5 shows the comparison of estimated values to actual and the trend approaches Shuster's periodic trend. 7. A periodic description of days after March 1 for irrigation periods was developed to predict ten-day evaporation in Fig. 6. The ten-day etraporation is different in the distribution form and occurence period of maximum values from the reported Penman's man's evapotranspiration.
