Shear Strength of Grout Type Transverse Joint

  • This is the first of two part series on experimental studies of grout type transverse joints. In this study, grout type transverse joints between precast concrete slabs are statically tested to determine the cracking loads and ultimate shear capacities of the grout type transverse joints. The tests are performed with a loading equipment designed and constructed especially in the lab to induce shear failures on the joints of the test specimens. Shape of the transverse joints, grouting materials and amount of prestress are selected as test parameters for the study. The results indicate that epoxy is an excellent grouting material which can be used in limited locations where large tensile stress is acting on the slab. Longitudinal prestressing is also an effective method to increase the shear strength of the transverse joints. A rational method to estimate the cracking and ultimate loads for the design of grout type transverse joints is proposed based on the static loading tests. Success of the tests with shear loading equipment allowed continuing the research further onto the fatigue strength of the grout type joints, which will be presented in the second part of the paper.

A Free Trade Area of the Asia Pacific (FTAAP): Is It Desirable?

  • This paper evaluates whether the proposed FTAAP is a desirable policy option for APEC member economies and the world economy. More specifically, this paper qualitatively investigates whether the FTAAP satisfies conditions for a trade bloc to generate positive and sufficient net trade creation effect. In addition, this paper estimates the likely impact of the FTAAP by using a CGE model analysis. From the qualitative analysis based on statistical data, this paper strongly argues that the FTAAP can be a desirable regional trade bloc able to generate positive gains from freer trade. From the ex-ante scenario analysis using both static and capital accumulation CGE Models, this paper concludes that the FTAAP has great potential for improving welfare of participating APEC economies and will boost economic growth in the region. In particular, the FTAAP would be even better if it can be linked with liberalization of trade in services and enhanced trade facilitation.

On Validation to the Three-Dimensional Multigrid Calculations of Rotating Impeller Flows in Centrifugal Compressors (멀티그리드 기법을 이용한 원심압축기 임펠러의 3차원 회전유동 전산해석에 대한 검증)

  • The three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in rotational coordinate are solved using a multigrid algorithm for the calculations of turbulent flows in centrifugal compressor impellers. Some numerical studies are made in applying the multigrid algorithm for the turbulent flow calculations with the standard κ-ε equations. The present method is used to calculate the flow fields of Mizuki's B-type and Niigata Ms. 350 centrifugal compressor impellers. Fast convergent steady-state solutions are carefully examined, comparing the static pressure distributions along the impeller flow passage and also in the diffuser with experimental data. Performance of a centrifugal compressor system is also numerically validated by comparing the performances of the impeller and the diffuser individually.

  • Vehicle body frame stiffness affects the dynamic and static characteristics. Vehicle frame structural performance is greatly affected by crossmember and joint design. While the structural characteristics of these joints vary widely, there is no known tool currently in use that quickly predicts joint stiffness early in design cycle. This paper presents the joint design factors affecting on low frequency vibration. The joint factors are joint panel thickness, section property, flange width and weld point space. To study the effect on vehicle low frequency vibration, case studies for these factors are performed. And Sensitivity analysis for section property is performed. The result can present design guide for high-stiffness vehicle.

Evaluation on Interaction Surface of Plastic Resistance for Exposed-type Steel Column Bases under Biaxial Bending

  • Exposed-type steel column bases are used widely in low-rise building construction. Numerous researchers have examined methods to identify their stiffness and strength, but those studies have heretofore been restricted to in-plane behaviors. This paper presents an experimental investigation of inelastic behaviors of square hollow section (SHS) steel column bases under biaxial bending. Two types of failure modes are considered : anchor bolt yielding and base plate yielding. Different pinching effects and interaction surfaces for biaxial bending are observed for these two modes during bi-directional quasi-static cyclic loading tests. Differences are elucidated using limit analyses based on a simple analytical model.

Studies on the Packing Characteristics of Coating Colors Based on the Rheological Properties at High Shear Rates (고전단점도 측정에 의한 도공액의 패킹 특성 연구)

  • High shear viscosity at several solids levels was measured for a number of pigment slurries and coating colors containing either anionic or amphoteric latex and analyzed according to Mooney and Eiler equations. Maximum packing fraction and intrinsic viscosity were obtained and compared. Eiler equation provides more credible information than Mooney equation on particle packing and intrinsic viscosity. The packing fraction obtained from Eiler equation was slightly greater than that obtained from static FCC measurement indicating the influence of pigment movement under the dynamic condition. Amphoteric latex caused 4-5% increase of maximum packing fraction of a coating color when its pH is lowered from 7 to 6, while anionic latex did not show any significant change in packing characteristics.

Mathematical Model of Optimal Payouts under Non-linear Demand Curve

  • In this study, a mathematical model that shows the optimal payout policy is developed. The model is new and unique in the sense that not only continuous-time framework is used, but also both partial differential equation (PDE) and real-option approach are utilized in the derivation of optimal payouts for the first time. In the model building, non-linear demand curve for dividend payouts in the competitive capital markets is assumed. From the sensitivity analysis using traditional comparative static analysis, some useful managerial implications which are consistent with famous previous studies are derived under realistic conditions. All results in this study, however, are valid under the assumption that the opportunity costs follow geometric Brownian motion, which is widely used in economic science and finance literature.

Colliding bodies optimization for size and topology optimization of truss structures

  • This paper presents the application of a recently developed meta-heuristic algorithm, called Colliding Bodies Optimization (CBO), for size and topology optimization of steel trusses. This method is based on the one-dimensional collisions between two bodies, where each agent solution is considered as a body. The performance of the proposed algorithm is investigated through four benchmark trusses for minimum weight with static and dynamic constraints. A comparison of the numerical results of the CBO with those of other available algorithms indicates that the proposed technique is capable of locating promising solutions using lesser or identical computational effort, with no need for internal parameter tuning.

Discrete element modeling of masonry structures: Validation and application

  • The failure mechanism and maximum collapse load of masonry structures may change significantly under static and dynamic excitations depending on their internal arrangement and material properties. Hence, it is important to understand correctly the nonlinear behavior of masonry structures in order to adequately assess their safety and propose efficient strengthening measures, especially for historical constructions. The discrete element method (DEM) can play an important role in these studies. This paper discusses possible collapse mechanisms and provides a set of parametric analyses by considering the influence of material properties and cross section morphologies on the out of plane strength of masonry walls. Detailed modeling of masonry structures may affect their mechanical strength and displacement capacity. In particular, the structural behavior of stacked and rubble masonry walls, portal frames, simple combinations of masonry piers and arches, and a real structure is discussed using DEM. It is further demonstrated that this structural analysis tool allows obtaining excellent results in the description of the nonlinear behavior of masonry structures.

Dynamic stability analysis of laminated composite plates in thermal environments

  • This paper studies the dynamic instability of laminated composite plates under thermal and arbitrary in-plane periodic loads using first-order shear deformation plate theory. The governing partial differential equations of motion are established by a perturbation technique. Then, the Galerkin method is applied to reduce the partial differential equations to ordinary differential equations. Based on Bolotin's method, the system equations of Mathieu-type are formulated and used to determine dynamic instability regions of laminated plates in the thermal environment. The effects of temperature, layer number, modulus ratio and load parameters on the dynamic instability of laminated plates are investigated. The results reveal that static and dynamic load, layer number, modulus ratio and uniform temperature rise have a significant influence on the thermal dynamic behavior of laminated plates.
